Got_Bent , in Oregon lifts ban on self-serve gas, leaving N.J. as the only state prohibiting it

I can’t see myself headed back to Oregon any time soon, but good. It was so frustrating trying to get gas behind a line of twenty five cars being “served” by a single slack jawed yokel taking smoke breaks between each car and God help you if you needed gas at night when everybody was closed.

New Jersey gas attendants can be surly, but my experiences driving there at least moved the cars through getting gas efficiently.

HeyJoe ,

As someone from NJ I agree 100% with surly. Also you can get someone weird or the guy who just wants to talk the entire time. I really do hope this changes one day.

surewhynotlem ,

Or the guy who tries to wash your windows then asks for a tip. I’m still annoyed at that, and it was at least 15 years ago.

drzoidberg ,
@drzoidberg@lemmy.world avatar

Having lived in NJ most of my life, and recently driving almost cross country to FL, the only benefits of living in FL is that there are like never any lines waiting for gas, and I don’t have to wait for a guy to come out. I just pull up, fill up, and GTFO.

DAMunzy ,

Moved from Florida to New Jersey. You can keep Florida and I’ll keep my gas attendants! 😉

I fucking hate this state. I’ve been here for 9 months, and hate every part of it. The water is fucking disgusting, the heat is absurd, the traffic is ridiculous, the roads are shit, the beaches are shit, the people are… mentally handicapped is the nicest way to put it, the food is meh at best unless you want Cuban or something fried. There are absolutely no cultural things, like museums or anything that’s not hick crap. Went to a ship museum in Tampa with my kids, and it was a rusted out hulk of a boat.

Enjoy the cultural overload of the excess of museums, including the Nimitz, the amazing and huge variety of food, the cooler weather, really good pizza, and amazing pizza if you get closer to NYC, water that doesn’t smell like sewage until it’s ran for a minute or 2, water that doesn’t destroy your pots pans, and basically rust everything, you lucky bastard.

Oh yeah, and go fruit picking other than oranges, because you can just hit up dozens and dozens of orchards for all kinds of fruit picking, without sweating your balls off, pretty much any time of year.

Also, it’s called pork roll. Anyone that tells you it’s Taylor Ham is a monster, because Taylor Ham is the company that makes pork roll. Pork Roll with egg and cheese is a cure-all. Hangover, depression, snacky, quick breakfast, hungry, and dying? Yeah pork roll with egg and cheese on a roll will solve all your problems. If you have extra problems, add bacon and double meat. Pork roll with bacon, egg, and cheese on a hard roll will cure all your problems.

stranger , in Kai Cenat: Police plan to charge Twitch streamer after PS5 giveaway mayhem

If he didn’t cause any escalation and wasn’t promoting that kind of behavior then I don’t understand how Kai had any involvement in a “riot”; I also think that needing a permit for every little thing is a bit absurd. I’m not really a fan of him, but none of this really seems like his fault

andrewta ,

Honestly I’ve never heard of the guy before, but yeah I have to agree exactly how is this his fault?

Tangent5280 ,

This is exactly why people need to get a permit for shit like this. The permit requirement isn’t to filter who gets to assemble; it’s so that city services can divert resources to the locations of such assembly so that this thing exactly wouldn’t happen.

More police on a crowd control capacity. Traffic divertion so that the roads won’t get back up. Emergency vehicles and services will be made aware so they can reroute for any calls they get during this time away from crowds.

Come on, guys. I don’t have a background in any sort of civil services and I could think of all this just from the top of my head.

LexiconDrexicon ,

This isn’t Russia, but man do you people want it to be so bad

ExcursionInversion ,
@ExcursionInversion@lemmy.world avatar

Oh come the fuck on dude

ArmokGoB ,

Requiring a permit to assemble feels like a way to undermine the right to peacefully assemble.

Tangent5280 ,

But in this case they had no reason to think their permit might be denied - although that permit should be denied if the police can’t assign officers to crowd control; it should be denied if the road is a major artery for a nearby hospital etc. - the point is you get a permit to start a conversation and get to know if the assembly is a worthwhile idea.

PoppinKREAM , in Trump was just indicted for trying to steal the 2020 election

Trump pushed the big lie that the election was stolen. Trump lost in the courts^[1] including the Supreme Court.^[2] Then he tried to pressure state officials.^[3] He tried to pressure Pence.^[4]

So what does Trump do after exhausting all nonviolent methods of overturning the election? He turns to his supporters and lights them up making inflammatory statements such as;

  • We are going to fight for the survival of the nation.
  • Now is not the time to retreat, its to fight harder.
  • We will never give in, never back down, never surrender.
  • We will fight like hell.
  • You have to get your people to fight.

He primed them for weeks.

State officials had started getting death threats weeks before the attempted insurrection following the general election.^[5] Trump saw first hand what violence was being created as his supporters rioted and vandalized black churches in Washington back in December.^[6]

Trump didn’t stop his incitement after the initial violence, he got more specific. He told his supporters how, when, and where. He gave them 18 days notice inviting them to the rally telling them to be there, that it will be wild.^[7] And on the day of the insurrection Trump told his supporters to march on the Capitol and fight like hell.

Following the riot Trump continued to promote the big lie that had incited the insurrection. After the mob was dispersed, Trump praised and sympathized with the mob in a video he released, claiming once again that the election had been stolen.^[8] Then he praised the insurrection in a tweet after the mob had been dispersed. He told his mob to remember Jan. 6 forever. He said that he loved the insurrectionists and that the violent mob were special people.

Yepthatsme , (edited ) in The invisible laws that led to America’s housing crisis

Yea they tried to make America into Camazotz.

I am a builder and have watched this mess get worse and my solution is to get rid of air bnb and corporate investment in housing and to tax the holy hell out of second and third homes.

Edit: Camazotz is the mundane world in A Wrinkle in Time. Its description always had me picturing the suburbs.

AngryCommieKender ,

Been saying for years the easy way out of this mess is that residential property may only be owned by individuals, and to prevent hoarding, add an additional 10% to the property and sales tax of each property above one. So your 2nd property costs a mere 110%, but your 11th property will be assessed at 200% of the taxes.

We would also need some enforced rent controls, so that expense isn’t passed on to the renters.

Ensign_Crab ,

Honestly, the taxation proposal would have the same effect as simply outlawing corporate ownership of residential property, with the added benefit of temporarily pulling in tax revenue until the hoarders can unload their properties.

Not sure how this would apply to multifamily residential properties or things like hotels or campgrounds, though.

dylanmorgan ,

Hotels are already in a different class than residential properties. They’re taxed differently and have regulations on thing like cleanliness. Campgrounds are also different, they’re not intended for permanent residence.

One of the reasons Airbnb and its clones are bad is that they don’t have the regulations hotels do, so renters who expect safe conditions are sometimes fatally disappointed: medium.com/…/living-and-dying-on-airbnb-6bff8d600…

BedSharkPal ,

Seriously how fucking hard is it to implement that? It seems so incredibly obvious.

Reverendender ,

For those wondering like me, Camazotz is a Mayan bat spirit at the service of the lords of the underworld. So, I’m really not sure what to make of that reference.

FlyingSquid ,

Maybe they meant Camelot? Although that doesn’t make much sense either, at least it’s building-related.

Yepthatsme ,

Camazotz is the mundane world in A Wrinkle in Time and its description in that book always reminded me of the suburbs.

sylver_dragon ,

As a similar alternative, a Land Value Tax would be a good way to drive more efficient uses of land. Single family homes on large lots in cities would quickly become uneconomical.
