NocturnalMorning , in Core Values

This is just basic psychology. It takes a long time to change someone’s political beliefs, and it isn’t effective to just argue with people, even with facts. Interestingly, one way to get people to change their opinion is to frame things in terms of how it affects them and their family.

glennglog22 ,
@glennglog22@kbin.social avatar

I always had the weird thought that maybe conservatives could be convinced into reason if socialistic ideals were reframed to "sound" more conservative. Sadly I suck at anything relating to politics so eh.

runjun ,

Due to how I look and where I work, conservatives constantly assume I am one too. I used to discuss/debate them about their views. I gave that up. Now I just say I disagree so that even if they tell others that everyone that talk to agrees with them, somewhere in the back of the their mind they know that’s not true.

nao ,

It’s interesting how it seems so important for “conservatives” to believe that everyone agrees with them

shani66 ,

The driving force, the raison d’etre of the authoritarian mind is to be normal. Not be happy, not be rich, not be good, be normal, by whatever they feel is normal. Not only is it pretty pathetic, it makes them justify their beliefs with the idea that they are normal even though they are anything but.

runjun ,

Cause they know the policies are cruel and doing cruel things is easier when others buy in.

_danny ,

That’s how I’ve framed raising the minimum wage to some hard right co workers.

Why should my tax dollars subsidize Walmart, McDonald’s and these other companies that pay minimum wage knowing their workers will be on welfare? If your business has to pay a wage that has to be compensated by the government, it’s a failing business.

VubDapple ,

That’s the way! Using the same rhetorical pattern they are used to hearing, “they took our jobs!” and slightly modifying it to point to a different “evil”, the corporations rather than the traditional scapegoats.

shani66 ,

Not just a thought, these people don’t think through their political beliefs (to be fair many people don’t, but most others don’t make it a core part of themselves either), it’s mostly just aesthetics for them.

Asafum ,

Aesthetics or athletics, they see it as a team sport too lol Gotta support the reds even if they really really suck this… Century.

irmoz ,

Everyone should be a business owner!

lugal ,

Also: One conversation might not change someone completely but it can be part of a process. Be happy when people open up and don’t try to convince everyone at once. Leave them with a good feeling, that will be more effective than having all the facts right and be angry with them. They will more likely think about it and change their view eventually (looking at you Alex, the first vegan I ever met and who left me with a good impression)

kool_newt ,

It seems best to facilitate people’s ability to change on their own. Plant seeds of cognitive dissonance and walk away.

tryptaminev ,

You think cognitive dissonance is a bug that they would take to realize they are wrong. But it is a core feature of far right ideologies

kool_newt ,

I think you’re right for a large segment, but I’m convinced that there are people with some brains and heart that just happen to be surrounded by right wing ideologies and unexposed to and given misinformation about ideas outside their bubble.

Perfide ,

I don’t. Fuck intubating them, fuck admitting them to the hospital at all, that’s room that could go to treating someone not dying from the consequences of their own actions.

EmpathicVagrant ,

Either way, the unvaccinated spreading is what caused so many mutations and variants.

Perfide ,

The elephant and the rider

CosmicTurtle ,

It took me…I’d say 2 years from being a full conservative to a left-leaning independent. And then another 2 years to being a moderate to progressive liberal.

It does happen. But some people are so rooted in their political identity that they will never change.

explodicle ,

The liberals in government need a little help, we should all unionize too so they won’t have to focus as much on worker’s rights. Like even shut down the rails if we need to. They can become the moderate option to keep things running.

Zink ,

That’s pretty much the process I went through ~20 years ago. The individual has to care about actual evidence and truth rather than the “truth = agree with me” crap that is common.

I think a big, big part of it is realizing that the people on your side are not necessarily arguing in good faith just because they’re on the “correct” team.

And that’s a pretty big deal when “just ignore that, it’s not real” is a deep core practice of your team.

Rep: they died of pneumonia not covid covid is a hoax and a Chinese bioweapon.

Like I can’t tell that they actually give a fuck about reality anymore even when they can directly see it killing them they still deny it.

NocturnalMorning ,

That’s a different problem. Too much propaganda from right wing interests.

s_i_m_s ,

So how do you combat that if even their family dying around them isn’t enough to get them to even consider those people on tv might have lied to them?

NocturnalMorning ,

I wish I knew the answer. At this point, much of it has become closely linked to their personality, and is basically a cult.

Facebones ,

This. I had to finally cut out a conservative friend after a long run of various nonsense, far from the least of which was him shushing me for being “too political” saying I want our half hour busses back - right before him and his girlfriend talked guns and other pointed “conservative” interests for an hour.

I was just there for them to flex on and outnumber for fun. We have common interests and used to discuss and enjoy them together, her included, but without any of our other friends around to put weight on the balance they could indulge in their favorite past time - Dunking on librulz.

Gabu ,

For stupid people, that might be true.

NocturnalMorning ,

Nothing to do with intelligence I promise.

Asafum ,

Exactly, and to anyone reading this: the absolute DUMBEST most useless form of communication is insulting someone you don’t agree with. I see it way too much here to be honest. All that does is make you feel better (masturbation) while it makes the recipient more defensive, less inclined to listen, and it reenforces their beliefs that the “opposite side” is just full of angry ignorant people.

If the purpose of your attempt at communication was actual communication and understanding then insulting someone is completely antithetical to that.

VaultBoyNewVegas ,

Also the new version, which might be beta still, just sends you to a web browser to do shit in. If I wanted to open emails in a web browser in the first place then I’d do that.

mamotromico ,

I mean, I’m fairly sure the new client is a web wrapper, either electron or some alternative since the actual application has parity with the web version (I use it at work). If it is redirecting you to an actual browser there’s likely something wrong with your configuration.

Since I use the enterprise version there’s no ads whatsoever. I don’t find it particularly good but it’s decent enough.

fork ,

It is. Most new Microsoft apps are web apps. Though they’re ditching electron for some better web wrappers.

They’re also beginning the process of passing 365/Enterprise Outlook for this new watered down Outlook. Enterprise users are obviously pissed to see “Try the new outlook!” hovering over their regular outlook like a cloud of doom.

The outlook subreddit made a gigantic list of feature imparity. Microsoft has made some feature progress since then in preview. But it’ll suck when they actually release it I’m sure.

2019–2023, 100% WFH until recently. Once or twice a week, notified a package couldn’t be delivered because no one was home.

Became mates with the local postman because I was always home for domestic deliveries and just taught the house to “suffere” the extra day for postage instead of +$3 for faster international shipping since it was going to be guaranteed and ultimately faster. PLUS it gave out local post man a chance to chat with me and give the dog pats and a treat.

AlligatorBlizzard ,

A friend of mine had the funniest lost in transit story - they’ve got genetic joint issues among other things, and they needed a pair of crutches with forearm rests. Turns out the only manufacturer of those still left is based out of South Africa, so they contacted the company and arranged for a set to be shipped over to the US (and it was still cheaper than it would have been through insurance). They got an email from the company and it turns out the shipment to the port got hijacked. The apologetic representative from the company drove a set down to the port and my friend got their crutches a couple weeks later and a funny story out of it. And probably the other set of crutches eventually got to someone else who needed them, so win win, lol.

c0mbatbag3l ,
@c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world avatar

If you can spring for it buy some high protein beans or lentils or some other legume and mix them, almost every society on the planet no matter the geography invented rice and beans because it’s so damn easy to store for long periods of time and will get you the protein and calories you need to survive.

Is it fun? No. But it will get you fed and it’s an excellent base to throw in other things to spice it up. Get a little extra money and can afford a bit of meat and veggies? Sauteed them up and you get a full blown meal with a side dish and a porkchop/fish filet/chicken breast with your rice.

Horsepower is averaged based on an extended time period, how much power a horse can put out on average while constantly working. They can’t do 15 hp on a constant basis, they can only do it for a relatively brief period of time, so their average is 1 hp. A 15 hp engine can run at 15 hp for a much longer period of time, which a horse can’t do. If the engine was hypothetically capable of working consistently without ever breaking down, it would be able to run at 15 hp indefinitely. But even with the machine’s lifespan in mind, it can still run for years at the same output, which is impossible for a horse.

Max I ever spent on renting was 25% of my net income, but usually it was more like 20%. Now I actually spend only 10% of my net income on my mortgage, thanks to inflation helping my income while keeping the mortgage static.

Younger generations are definitely getting screwed.

Don’t accept the status quo.

Snipe_AT ,
@Snipe_AT@lemmy.atay.dev avatar

Just curious about your perspective. What would you think are some good ideas on changing the status quo?

I think that outlawing real estate as investments would mean that high to medium density living spaces like apartment complexes or high rises in cities don’t get built, and allowing the government to dole out who gets what properties is another recipe for disaster.

Please don’t take this as confrontational, I’m genuinely trying to consider what alternatives some people are thinking about.

thefartographer ,

Stop vilifying the poor, high subsidies and incentives for living in high-density housing including de-incentivizing predatory landlords, increase taxes on the rich, and a sliding scale of taxes on multiple properties with the lowest rates affecting the lowest value properties.

alvvayson ,

I think Henry George had the right idea.

Fact is, as people get more money, they want bigger homes, second homes, rental properties, etc…

It’s going to be a never ending bidding war between citizens to own the most and nicest properties.

So the solution is to tax real estate at high rates, but give that money back in the form of deductibles on income tax to the middle class who live in their middle class owner occupied homes.

Another part is to let government build a huge supply of very basic, affordable housing, which then serves as a price anchor.

Basically, not outlawing homes as investment, but making them unappealing as investments.

Most developed countries had or have systems like this in place. They just need strengthening.

charles ,
@charles@lemmy.world avatar

Tax the shit out of residential real estate investments for corporations and anything beyond the first 3 dwellings owned by individuals. Carve out exceptions for apartment complexes.

Croquette ,

Stop corporations from owning anything other than appartments buildings full stop.

Tax the shit out of anything other than the primary residence.

The_v ,

I wouldn’t carve out an exception for apartment complexes.

Transition apartment complexes to a condo model with HOA fees to cover all the shared upkeep and expenses. Limit HOA fees to real upkeep costs and expenses (no massive profits for a HOA management company).

My sister-in-laws first place was an apartment complex converted to condos. Her mortgage plus HOA fees where the same as the rent on a comparable apartment in he area.

When she got married, had kid, and purchased a larger place 5 years later, she got her down payment plus all of her mortgage payments back (sold it for 10% more than she bought it for).
