Even without hustle culture I’m not going to be as motivated as a crackhead looking for a fix because I am not powered by addiction. I’m more motivated to sleep and eat way too much pie so a pothead would be better competition.

I know it’s a rhetorical question, but briefly. I ate a burrito in Fort Smith, stayed at a crappy motel by Fayetteville one time in the shadow of Jesus billboards, and drove through Little Rock. It was very “natural”.
It was a very average burrito in a sit-down Mexican restaurant, one of those places that has a nice building and atmosphere but seems to cater to a midwestern palate. I think it was La Huerta Grill. Probably would have been better any state to the Southwest of there. Looking at the map now, if I was there again, I’d go to a pupusa place… those are always super good.

Of course people also confuse cities and states. Like on the game shows, people will say things like Los Angeles when they mean California, and vice versa.

Western european countries would definitely do better. Every time I see one of those videos of a guy on the street asking people geography the Americans are completely worthless but and random european is almost perfect. Americans can’t even get their states of our own country correct

Just want to say that every time Reddit does something shitty like this, Lemmy will get a boost. And with Lemmy constantly getting better (both community and platform), I’m willing to bet these boosts come with smaller user drop offs every time.
At this point (and with Sync, as I used for reddit), Lemmy is indistinguishable from my reddit browsing experience. Except on Lemmy I don’t encounter constant hostility.
There are a couple of communities I miss, like r/fountainpens and r/suzukisamurai. Im sure I could figure out how to create those communities, im not sure I’d be a good mod.
That and the impact. The amount of communism or total and complete anti capitalism without nuance or depth, right or wrong. Reddit was very left, but not like here!

The quality of posts and comments overall isn’t where Reddit was. That comes with volume, though.
Also, I haven’t found a single niche community that does what Reddit did. For instance, if I’m into a specific show, Reddit was my go to place for discussions about a new episode. Lemmy does not have that for any show I watch.
Niche comes with volume too. And really, niche is what’s important, not the broad strokes (I’d argue the boons of Lemmy are broad strokes at least). Reddit is worse for a lot of reasons, but man oh man, how can you convince someone to come over when the value is in the volume? I’m still primarily on Reddit, actively contributing to the problem.
I’ve been lucky so far, but ever since leaving reddit I’ve been in an infinitely better mood. Sometimes reddit would bring out the worst in me as well, and I’d be short with people or needlessly confrontational. You could tell when I was in a shitty place mentally because my post history would shift from light-hearted and sentimental to easily annoyed with frequent cursing. Reddit’s algorithm really fine-tuned its way under my skin, and I found myself increasingly angry as the years went on. US political issues really got me going. I was never more irritable and mad at the world than I was over the past few years on reddit. Now all of that is just gone, and my Lemmy usage is about 20 minutes per day. I’m in a much better place.
but also, with every influx it waters down the spirit of lemmy a tiny bit in exchange for more activity / content / perspectives. which generally is worth it so far, but even still i can already see some discussions on here getting worse, with shittier viewpoints i wish were quarantined in facebook

I don’t think it works that way. A free service like Lemmy can be tried multiple times. People aren’t just going to ignore something forever cause they tried it once and it sucked. People understand that software evolves over time.
If a dedicated team wanted to work on it, there is the Servo engine which is currently developed by The Linux Foundation but is apparently entirely volunteer driven.
I’m not smart enough to do this kinda shit, but I’m sure there are plenty of others who would gladly work on it to make it bigger than it already is. You could then make your own browser based on that engine. Sure it would take years if not closer to over a decade, but the payoff for privacy and free web would be enough to make me spend all that time doing it.

It is a pendulum, here in Sweden I know many people feeling disillusioned by the social democrats, combine that with ineffectual meassures against gang violence (often perpetuated by second generation migrant), where the perpetrators don’t care about punnishment as it is quite mild.
Add to that that we have seen gangs and clans infiltrating the government at different levels, a few months ago two big news broke, one was that an employee at a court had let her criminal boyfriend sit at her computer using her access to go through classified documents, the other was that a student at the police academy had very close ties to gangs, to the point that it is assumed that they were tasked by the gang to join the police force and be a man on the inside.
Then we recently had a soldier who left his Ak5 complete with all parts in his car, against all regulations, when he was eating lunch, the car just happened to be burgled and the Ak5 rifle as well as a set of body armor was stolen.
It is assumed by most people that this was organized ahead of time, military vehicles have special number plates and are easily recognized, so he probably got paid to do this by a gang.
Then we have the dad who got shot a killed after asking a group of what was gabg members to behave as he was taking his son to the public pool, snd an altercation started, the dad was shot in the head and his 12 year old son called the police.
We also have some less recent major issues that had contributed to the rise of the right.
Incidents where young men from migrant families have been harrasing and even feeling up women, commonly at public pools.
Combine that with severe religious differences and some public pools have experimented with women only bathing hours.
Most of if not all of the above points have been related to migrants.
So it isn’t that odd that when the left offer what is seen as weak policies and pushes for understanding of the perpetrator and the right just says “fuck them, we gave them food, a place to live, security, healthcare and what do we get back? Gang violence, disrespect and harrasment!”, that people choose the right.
In my mind we need heavier punnishment, we need containment punnishments, way longer punnishments for those who are not interested in rehab which our justice system focuses on, after two times caught they need to get an automatic 10x the time normally given. If people are not interested in being part of a working society, then I’d rather they stay locked up.
While I don’t agree with your conclusion/personal opinion of more repressive politics as the solution to this, I still want to thank and upvote you for explaining the situation and the resulting political climate in Sweden in a bit of detail.
IMHO, none of that justifies voting for far-right or even fascist parties (like the AfD over here in Germany), but I can absolutely understand the reasons why people do it.

Sweden and Scandinavia as a whole put focus on rehab in prisons, so they get that, prison punnishment is meant to just be the incarseration, not the day to day life, that is supposed to be as normal as possible.

we do that here; not only does it both not work well and allows people to profit from exacerbating it; it fixes a lot less and costs a lot more than treating it like a societal issue; changing policy; and aggressive outreach.

I get what you are saying, but we allready have a prison system focusing on rehabilitation, and it doesn’t phase the gangs.
you’ll never stop the gangs; but you can make it more difficult to operate if it becomes getting harder to find new gang members and less cost effective to retain the ones trapped in their sphere.
By increasing the length of prison sentences, we atleast keep them contained for longer.

American here, our gangs primarily exist because the police do not benefit (and actively harm) minority communities, and the gangs offer what is essentially an alternative police force* for crimes that otherwise go unenforced and unreported. Is that not the reason for gangs in Sweden?
(Gangs in these categories historically include the Italian mafia in the US, the Gangs of New York, the Triads, the Crips & Bloods, and I’m sure I’m missing others)
I have no exact knowledge about why the gabgs appeared in Sweden, best I can say is the extreme culture clash between migrants and Swedes making them feel like outsiders.
Sweden in an extreme country with an extreme culture, where as other countries are far, far more religious and family oriented, we are far more individual and have a deeper connection to the government.
This is quite foreign to mugrants who have trouble understanding us, which makes them push further back against it.
To be clear, the main issue is the culture clash between Sweden and migrants from the middle east, we have a VERY different culture and relationship with the government.
The main issue as I see it is that Swedish culture is quite passive agressive, and we have not enforced our culture norms hard enough that they integrated into our society as well as possible, now people have talked about how we Swedes need to integrate ourselves into the migrant population.
It’s to show playfulness and that the artist doesn’t feel THAT strongly, imagine how cold the comic would be without it.
And then consider that women have been raised to be polite and apologetic to the point it is even a habit for most of us. I guess that’s why I can’t really see it as cringe even if I try.
My ex is an actress. It never bothered me really. She saw it as part of the job and I do too. I’m the one she’s looking for in the audience and taking her home at the end of the show lol.
My ex was an opera singer, same thing. I was in one of her shows (in the chorus) and I wasn’t sure how I’d feel. Seeing it, it’s the least romantic thing ever. The singers are sweaty and nasty and it’s not really pleasant. It might have helped that I knew the guy well enough too.
