Facebones , in Saw a news story people about people getting arrested for at Wal-Mart for forgeting to scan one item

I was physically restrained by 4 Walmart employees, and convicted based on blatant lies from the LP manager (who legally counts as a “professional witness,” meaning her word is literally law) and a petty larceny effectively bars you from employment for 7 years.

What I “stole?” I was having a bad mental health day and missed a $5 pair of sunglasses on a $2-300 shopping trip.

When the judge started to say “no intent,” she cut the judge off and hollared how she watched me remove the tag “and that’s intent if I ever saw it.” Never mind that the picture SHE BROUGHT TO COURT still had it attached, because PrOfEsSiOnAl WiTnEsS hUrRdUrR.

you went to COURT over 5$ ??

Facebones ,

Yep. Obviously I tried to pay for them and pointed out I spent over $200 like fuck $5, but after she started scrambling and lying in court I think she was probably just bad at her job and desperately trying to get any convictions she could to avoid losing it.

Or maybe it just gets her dick hard. Idk.

Technically its not “in hexbear” because its another lemmy instance, we can just see it. If you dont want to, change your main page to local.

Some people like the opportunity to dunk, and federation has brought some comrades over to our side. Others do not like the change in culture. Personally I change my mind on it depending on my mood.

ITT: Poor, downtrodden leeches landlords talking about how hard it is to be a landlord, when the easiest way to end their suffering is to just sell their extra fucking house(s).

Littleborat ,

They have once a year paperwork to do and still bitch and moan and they still call it work.

It’s disgusting.

The one “person” I know also drags tenants to court over stupid shit (he always loses 🤣)

Kusimulkku ,

Where I live landlords (if they’re renting directly at least) are in a big legal responsibility over all kinds of stuff. The easier way is to rent through some company that deals with the renter.

starelfsc2 ,

sadly if you try to be a good landlord and make a slim margin, you’ll get dumped a huge repair bill/tax increase/other expense and now you’re running the appartment at a loss. At that point you either sell it to a company willing to exploit it or you have to be less nice to your tenants and ignore repairs or charge more. Most people choose the first which is why we end up with terrible landlords.

aside: heard someone in that exact situation running low income housing, on a phone call with an expert talking to the government. The expert said “any prudent management would raise the rents the maximum allowed amount”

People also forget that most of the actual calculations were done on paper first; the computers were basically just executing precalculated instructions.

This is the stack of code used for the navigation software for the Apollo program.

(Fun fact: standing next to it is Margaret Hamilton, director of NASA’s Software Engineering Division & the lead of the team who wrote that code.)

interolivary ,
@interolivary@beehaw.org avatar

Additional fun fact: Margaret Hamilton is the person who coined the term “software engineering”

EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted ,
@EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Ooh, I didn’t know that. That is a fun fact! 😁

Quereller ,

These are multiple printouts of the code. The computer did not only execute precalculated instruction. (This would be a sequencer BTW.). Try it yourself AGC.

EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted ,
@EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

That is pretty cool. I might try it tonight since I’m at work right now. Thanks!

Though, to be fair, I did say that most of the code was precalculated.

interolivary ,
@interolivary@beehaw.org avatar

I’m not quite sure if even that is correct. The AGC, as far as I understand it, did do quite a bit of calculation on the fly and was essentially the first digital fly by wire system. It did rely on input from the crew and ground control for eg correcting its state vector etc etc, but it even has dedicated vector instructions if I recall correctly. Can’t really precompute all that much when you can’t be sure things will go to plan and you’re dealing with huge distances. It did have eg separate programs for different phases of the flight but they weren’t really precalculated as such, more like different modes that eg read input from different sensors etc etc.

The US space program was pretty big on having a human in the loop though, much more so than the Soviet one which relied more on automation and the pilot was more of a passenger in a sense, sort of a failsafe for the automatic systems.

The book Digital Apollo goes into all this this in more detail, I can highly recommend it if you’re a ginormous nerd like I am and think that computers we’ve shot into space are endlessly fascinating

EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted ,
@EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I didn’t know that. Thanks for telling me! I’ll have to check out that book. It sounds fascinating. :)

Godric , in When someone replies to this and says 'stop making everything political' they mean to tell you to stop challenging the status quo

“Everything is political” shares the same vibes:

NotSpez , (edited )

I agree. It’s like sometimes you just want to go for a walk and there’s some guy following you around screaming EvErYtHiNg Is PhYsIcS just to remind you that there are physical laws to explain the world around you. Just shut up and let me walk in peace sometimes.

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

You’re very fortunate that you can take the time to ignore those politics. For many people, these issues affect them to such an extent that they can’t be ignored at all. As for the amount of memes challenging the status quo here… well… if you’re on Lemmy, the status quo didn’t work for you either.

lightnsfw ,

What has their constant fixation on these problems achieved? I have problems that affect me every day, I can still fuck around on the internet or whatever for a while and get my mind off it. Constantly immersing yourself in this stuff is not healthy.

c0mbatbag3l ,
@c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly, armchair meme politics does literally nothing and it’s the only “activism” half these chuckle fucks have ever taken part in.

cyclohexane ,

“Political Memes” is extremely vague. To demonstrate, I opened the community, and this was the 3rd meme that came up. Imo this blurs the line or what counts as political. I’m sure you can find many others.

Makeshift , in The three most common 2D transformations.

Siegfried ,

grue ,
applebusch ,

Why is this coming back… I keep seeing this on here, are people trying the bring this back? Why?

Makeshift ,

For me, the loss meme always makes me lose The Game.

So the prevalence of Loss is directly correlated to my loss of The Game. And upon seeing Loss, I choose to follow the rules of The Game and let others suffer a loss as well!

I do not apologize for sharing the mental connection between the two. It amuses me.
