Just transitioned from a Google + slack company to a Microsoft account company.

I asked if we put our email accounts on our phones to be able to answer after hours, my supervisor said very few people are given access to emails on their phones.

I am fine with the switch, I used to get 40-60 emails to sort through a day. Now I will be doing maybe 5-10 a day and only 3 or 4 might actually be for me and I only have an 8 hour day with no after hours meetings.

undercrust ,

Sounds like a pretty big win to me? Who answers emails after hours, yuck

Now I wonder if there’s a correlation between companies using Microsoft package being companies less obsessed with crunch culture…

Ashe ,

They must have some intense data retention policies. You can configure compliance levels to allow anyone into their Outlook acct using the app without any special permissions pretty easily.

Good on them to cut down access like that

tty5 ,

I’ve had a company require employees to install MDM on personal phones (remote control/management) to be allowed to use them for 2fa app or email access… there was a surprised Pikachu when I refused. Eventually they issued me a company phone, because it was impossible to do most tasks without 2fa. That device was on 9 to 5 only.

ichbinjasokreativ ,

What the fuck? Are there really people who allow that?

tty5 ,

Over 98% did. My job was security adjacent so I’ve had some insight into those metrics

ichbinjasokreativ ,

I work in IT and endpoint management is among my tasks. Knowing the things we can do to smartphones that are controlled by our mdm is enough to where I would never agree to having thatopn my personal device. I even refused to get a company provided smartphone.

tty5 ,

Same.

It was kind of fun, because I joined the company as a part of acquihire and they came to my entire team to install MDM on our laptops. It turned out we were mostly running Linux, while their MDM was Windows and MacOS only. They left…

They came back 2 weeks later to tell us it would be best if we installed Windows. We told them “no, thank you” to which they responded with surprised pikachu, because they were used to their suggestions being treated as commands. So they left again.

A month later they came back to tell us we really should install Windows to which we responded that we’d have to rebuild out entire tooling and we’re on tight deadlines as-is. It’s important to note that their Windows setup didn’t allow VMs…

Some time later we got an email to let us know MDM vendor will soon have Linux beta. Does it support Arch and Nixos? They’ll get back to us on that. And we started researching how hard would it be to run BSD on a laptop ;-)

Ah, the confidence boost you get when you know your job is absolutely secure and the only reason you don’t quit is because of a retention bonus :D

eatham ,
@eatham@aussie.zone avatar

Remote control of your personal phone for work? That sounds dodgey, I would definitely refuse. Would anyone actually accept that?

Also, 2fa is a really shit excuse for that.

tty5 ,

Less than 2% of workforce got issued a company phone for that reason.

Any device required MDM installed to get access to VPN that got you to company network, to get 2fa app, SSO or email.

Patches ,

Sounds like they’re respecting work life balance in a round-about way.

No Boss, I didn’t get that email sent at 11 PM last night. I don’t sit in front of my PC at all hours of the day.

VeganCheesecake ,
@VeganCheesecake@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Why not just a physical TOTP token? There’s ones that do 100 Tokens, probably won’t need more than that. Smartphone for 2fa seems overkill.

tty5 , (edited )

Because the only 2FA allowed was onelogin push. Don’t ask me why.

They also used an “enterprise” VPN that was acquired by some larger company, was pretty much abandoned at that point and only worked with a proprietary client that took days to set up on Linux - this was fun for me and all my colleagues who ended at that sad company as a result of an acquihire and were 80% devs running linux.

Patches , (edited )

But why would anyone?

I have an MDM on my work phone and I can’t even access PlayStore anymore. It only allows Company Allowed Apps which is to say nothing. YouTube is broken because MDM somehow controls my DNS records. Firefox cannot be installed so Ads everywhere. Chrome only and it can only go to approved websites because Yahoo is safe but Ars Technica is not???

Why would anyone want that on a device they pay for?

Is my MDM different from their MDM?

aicse ,

MDM can be configured in 2 modes, one with company owned devices and one with bring your own device. But there are lots of settings that can be done, usually it is configured with work and personal profiles and the work one has all the restrictions in place and the personal has no limits. Maybe just some device features can be also enforced, like forbid the OEM unlock and ADB.

Honytawk ,

But … why?

Outlook on phones works well enough. Was it some security measurement or something?

Rakonat ,

My particular company emails contain privilege information and there is absolutely zero trust in letting smart phones aka roaming data leaks anywhere near that.

Mycatiskai ,

I mean it doesn’t matter to me, I don’t want to take my work home with me and I’m close to the computer while I’m at work.

BurningRiver ,

It is normally a security thing. Unless the company has managed mobile devices, you don’t want company data on a personal cell phone.

I’ve always thought that perhaps all the stereotypes about the French being arseholes come from American tourists being entitled and disrespectful and the French just not taking any of their shit

Mr_Blott ,

Lived in Paris for a year and this is 100% the reason, according to Parisian waitstaff I knew. Same for the Brits.

Apparently the reason is the french motto “Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité”

They take that shit seriously. Every job is equally valuable and to be respected. You speak to and treat a waiter or a cleaner the same way you speak to a doctor or a lawyer, they’re all égal humans

A sizeable portion of American and British tourists treat waitstaff like animals, and cleaners as though they don’t exist, then wonder why they’re rude to them

It’s égalité, and yous started it, yous cunts 😂

sailingbythelee ,

The current bad reputation of the French is mostly because of WW2. They surrendered after only 6 weeks of fighting and then heavily collaborated with the Nazis. French collaboration was so heartfelt that they refused to hand over their navy to the British when requested to do so. They even fired on American ships and troops in North Africa when the Americans arrived to liberate them from German occupation.

The French were also enthusiastic participants in the Final Solution. According to Wikipedia, “the Nazis in France relied to a considerable extent on the co-operation of local authorities to carry out what they called the Final Solution. The government of Vichy France and the French police organized and implemented the roundups of Jews.”

After the war, De Gaulle promoted the narrative that the French heroically resisted the Nazis, but this was not at all true. The famous French Resistance was tiny until the last part of the war, and only grew once it became clear that Germany would lose. The French government also denied their role in the Holocaust for over 50 years until 1995 when Jacques Chirac finally admitted that, “[T]hose black hours soiled our history forever. … [T]he criminal madness of the occupier was assisted by the French people, by the French State. … France, that day, committed the irreparable.”

So, yeah, that’s why people dunk on France, particularly when it comes to military matters. They certainly did not live up to the ideals of the Revolution or the martial prowess of Napoleon.

Titou ,

You’re acting like every others countries are angels

sailingbythelee ,

Not at all. I identified a particular historical event where the French failed badly. Identifying one country’s specific mistakes doesn’t imply that others are angels. For example, obviously no one would claim that Germany and Japan were “angels” during WW2, but that goes without saying, right?

In fact, I responded to another commenter who called them out for racism and arrogance because that is far too general a claim with no evidence.

Its not difficult to engineer a bit of safety into a cape. The clasps holding the cape around your neck/on your body can be designed to have a low breakaway strength to prevent strangulation(150N is a typical force). This is a feature designed into most safety helmets. Its secure enough to never fall off unintentionally, but weak enough that it removes the risk of strangulation.

No matter how scientific and very legal very cool semantic concepts you come up with it won’t change reality one fucking bit. Non binary… Nobody gives a FUCK, it has no correlation with ANYTHING in the Universe, it’s just another shit pseudophilosophical concept being shoved down everyone’s throat like it’s some kind of objective reality.

It’s metaphysics, and “you people” (yes, YOU PEOPLE) suck at it.

The shit you find in your belly hole while navel gazing is not worth shit.

Are you transphobic as well? I’m genuinely curious. Or does transgender count as “real” in your view because it does have a far more strict definition?

MetaCubed ,

I thought they were gender abolitionist, but I… I’m not too sure anymore.

LainTrain ,

I am too tbh, I think the weird thing is enbies to me are inherently a sort of political commentary through identity on gender and our relationship to it, unless I’m just wrong.

I think the whole issue is somewhat separate from trans people who mostly are just people with a mental neurodivergence/disorder called gender dysphoria that causes them anguish and is caused by their body’s sex and their brain’s innate sense of sex don’t agree and therefore they seek medical treatments like HRT and surgeries and documentation changes to help them perceive themselves and be perceived by others as members of the target sex as much as is humanly possible.

Their political angle is to fight for access to said healthcare to be more common, available through insurance, be taken more seriously with faster wait times and be available to younger people since the effectiveness of a lot of the treatments like hormones depends on the age you start.

Conflating the two imo is kinda like commentary on attention spans relating to social media and the actual neurological disorder ADHD.

MetaCubed ,

I think it’s a little “exotic” to call my existence an inherent political commentary. It’s certainly something that can be used to inform political debate, but I believe saying that it’s inherent misses the point that our existence is only political because it’s politicized

And for what it’s worth, gender dysphoria is also something experienced by nonbinary folks, but it isn’t a requirement of being trans or non-binary either. Some people just don’t experience it and requiring it as a clinical diagnosis is part of the medicalization of our and trans people’s existence as well.

I don’t really know how to finish this lol, I agree with the rest of your comment. I just wanted to correct what I feel are common misconceptions.

LainTrain ,

Maybe dysphoria isn’t a precondition to being trans, but I don’t get how.

What I don’t understand is then why transition? If you’re fine as you are, why the hassle? Just as fashion/identity? Body modding for lulz? Nothing wrong with either but it’s very removed from my XP.

I only transitioned because I needed to, to me GD is a curse treated with medication and surgeries I couldn’t live without and that’s basically all that being trans is to me. The identity of being trans is defined to me by dysphoria - mental torture associated with one’s birth sex fixed by becoming the other, or as close as possible with current tech.

Also how does enby dysphoria work? Do you just feel dysphoric about a mix of male and female traits? That’s wild if true.

chetradley ,

Telling someone whose gender doesn’t conform to the male/female binary view of gender that the term non-binary is a “shit pseudophilosophical concept” that “has no connection to reality” fucking sucks. Either you don’t recognize gender outside of the binary, or you just think these people don’t deserve a way to express and talk about their gender. Either way it’s a garbage take.

tan00k ,

You can’t gatekeep being nonbinary. Not unless you’re prepared to define it explicitly, which will exclude many people - and not everyone will agree with your definition either.

captainlezbian ,

I said just because. Not that effeminate men aren’t capable of being nonbinary, merely that it is not sufficient (or necessary for that matter). You have to like actually not identify as entirely a man.

But it’s not my place to fight I’m very much in the binary side of transness.

tan00k ,

Whose authority says it’s not sufficient? If they say they are nonbinary, they are nonbinary.

aBundleOfFerrets ,

OP means “don’t assume someone is non-binary because they are an effeminate man” and not “you aren’t non-binary just because you are an effeminate man”

tan00k ,

I suppose that’s possible, but the thing you say OP is not saying is literally a quote. So at best it’s worded poorly.

Sadbutdru ,

This is a miscommunication, you two are not really in disagreement as far as I can see. If someone {presents as an effeminate man} AND {they say they’re non-binary} => {they are non-binary}. brygphilomena ,

It’s hilarious that they do it in a way that blatantly goes against the flag code. How disrespectful it is to change the flag, to wear the flag, or use it for advertisements.

4 U.S. Code § 8 - Respect for flag

(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery.

(g) The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.

It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. The Gadsden flag, the snake, was a patriotic symbol during the American revolutionary war.

The snake in general was a common symbol used at the time with a famous (Franklin?) illustration of a snake in 13 pieces representing how the snake needs all 13 colonies to be whole.

The Gadsden flag was the “13 pieces of the snake united, coiled and dangerous” with its “don’t step on me” motto. This flag despite being anti-government oppression was actually supposed to represent the strength in our unity (sad they now use it to divide).

The blue line flag is part of a movement that implies that the police are the only thing holding back chaos from society. It’s designed to mean the flag only exists because police keep society existing. This has and was always been a load of shit but now has moved more into meaning “our side is the side who makes stuff work” and sliding even further into a fascist strongman style ethos.

Both are now effectively just “brands” of the American conservative right.

The thin blue line flag is supposed to support police, the weapon of the state. But the Gadsden flag represents that “they can’t or won’t be oppressed.” The Gadsden flag made a big comeback during the Bush years and the spread of a more “(what they called) libertarian” sect of the American right. Which frankly is bullshit because it’s an American symbol not the hate symbol they’ve coopted it into these days.

It’s a grab bag of US conservative branding but all in all on the surface you can make a measured bet that this person complains very hard about the taxes other people pay, don’t understand civics at a fundamental level, and likely while pretending they aren’t they are supremely racist.

You could equate these two flags to be the equivalent of someone flying a Thor Steinar logo flag in europe.

A better idea of how dumb this is would be imagine someone driving down the road in 2250 flying a Brexit flag and a EU flag on their truck

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.ml avatar

This. It’s a typical example of how conservatives are utterly clueless about American symbols. Like how they adopted Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” thinking it’s a patriotic jingle, when the song is completely critical of the USA. Just read the lyrics of the song for God’s sake.

But the only thing Goober Nation hears is “Born in the USA.”

Carvex ,

Springsteen was a genius, knew exactly what he was making. I remember the first time I listened to the lyrics and my heart broke a little. The lyrics are all too familiar and sting, with the sharp positive turn to the chorus. It’s a perfect metaphor for society.

Whenever I hear it I get angry with America, and I get angry with conservative boomers who use the verses as drinking breaks so they can belt out the chorus proudly thinking they are real patriots.

Easyreever ,

I do believe it was Franklin who had the 13 pieces of the snake but I always thought the 13 pieces of the snake was printed with the slogan “Unite or Die” which had a slightly different context than the more commonly seen “don’t tread on me”.

I expect that both were kicked around at the same time during the revolutionary or pre-revolutionary war and Franklin made use of it as he saw best.

Of course I could just search for it, but what fun would that be……I already researched it a long time ago, why go back and try to correct memory, right?
