Tomatoes are too fickle as far as I’m concerned. I grow all kinds of stuff, but never have luck with tomatoes. The flowers don’t pollinate without vibration, they need temperatures in a tight range to fruit, basically every pest on earth destroys them, just not worth it to me anymore. Which is a shame because I love them, but I’m basically over growing tomatoes.

barnsbauer ,

The tight temperature range is something I very much agree with you on. I think climate conducive to their growth play a big factor in disease immunity as well. I’ve seen them thrive like weeds in sub tropical regions. But for some reason, even in controlled conditions, they fail to do that well here in my area.

Slowy ,
@Slowy@lemmy.world avatar

I always attributed more to soil and sun, because I grow great tomatoes easily in my garden every year. This year I did have to fertilize a few times, and they are only ripening now. I’m on the Canadian Prairies so not exactly subtropical. And I’m not that good a gardener either, cucumbers are often a struggle for me and my beets always get demolished by birds. And it’s been a good 4 years of various weather here and still, nice tomatoes. I wonder if there are some more locally adapted strains you could try?

barnsbauer ,

Going for some locally adapted strains is a great idea. Thanks for that! I’m actually a terrible gardener so I hadn’t thought of it. I just used what little seeds my neighbour gave me, and in limited area because I tend to prioritise fruits over veggies and they are what dominate most of my garden. The little space I experimented with tomatoes on is currently occupied by legumes.

C_Leviathan ,

Dude, I grow tomatoes in a 4’ x 6’ plot of dirt by the sidewalk in Montreal with zero tending and I have more tomatoes than I know what to do with every year. What are you doing so wrong?

CowsLookLikeMaps ,

When you say zero tending, are you even watering them? Asking for a friend who knows fuck all about street tomatoes.

Maturin ,

If they are in the ground they only need one good watering a week after they get established. In containers you need to water more.

C_Leviathan ,

I was exaggerating a little. I tied them to sticks and removed the useless branches/leaves. I watered the first week and nothing since.

mister_monster ,

Living in a place with much hotter summers.

C_Leviathan ,

I would think that would benefit them, being native to the area around the equator.

Misconduct ,

I have like six different tomato plants growing out of jars (started as seeds) hydroponically. They take almost no effort. It’s actually super easy to grow them if you eliminate nature from the process lol.

mister_monster ,

Yeah, maybe I’ll try that when I have a greenhouse.

papajohn , in A dollar saved is a dollar earned

I just got out of a water conference. The big takeaway was for me was that where sewer spills happened, tomatoes grow later.

Sludgehammer ,
@Sludgehammer@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not too surprising. Tomatoes are usually eaten uncooked, so the seeds are almost always viable when they hit the sewer system. Add to that tomatoes are tropical, so when a seed hits the soil it’s gonna start growing.

x4740N ,
@x4740N@lemmy.world avatar

Home grown taste like a real tomato, the super Market once taste mostly like water

yukichigai ,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Seriously. Someone post the King of the Hill clip. You know the one.

OneOrTheOtherDontAskMe ,

It was only the other day I learned that the reason for this is mostly due to how they ripen, which I’m sure you already know.

For those that don’t, when you pick a tomato from your garden, you’ve picked it at your desired color and freshness. When you buy a tomato from the supermarket (most if not all), you’re buying a tomato that wasn’t fully ripened on th vine, but instead is blasted with some ethylene, a naturally occurring gas that normally is produced by tomatoes actively ripening, causing the tomato to continue to mature but not develop some of the complexity of taste you get from proper vine ripening. They’re often picked a little green when in super-farms because they’re firmer and less prone to damaging that way, and then ripened during packaging. That, and the tomato you eat from supermarkets and fast food are all super homogenous and bred specifically for mass yield.

ChronosWing ,

Grocery stores sell vine ripened tomatoes. They tend to also sell locally grown ones from local farmers which taste just as good as the ones you can grow at home. Any other ones you should just steer clear of for the reasons you listed.

@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

Surely it’s basically exactly the same now still? Take the radio faceplate so it can’t be nicked, lock the wheel, make sure the windows are rolled up and if you live somewhere hot, use a reflector to help keep the heat away.

robotrash ,

I haven’t seen a car with an aftermarket stereo in a decade but I’m probably speaking from a place of privilege. I do think they’re far less prevelant now though

CIWS-30 ,

Probably, but there was a time when you could easily make your old car feel new just by adding an aftermarket stereo with bluetooth (and mic compatibility) and a USB port and an aux-in port.

My car's 6-cd changer (which could play MP3 CD's) broke so I replaced it with one of a new one with all those features and it almost felt brand new. I could connect my phone to it, take calls via bluetooth, change all sorts of settings including balance and equalization, it was actually a revelation.

It was so good that I had my sister get the same thing, because while her radio worked, her CD player did not, and it was also very useful for her as well.

I actually got the idea because of all the features that my mother's (then new) 2013 Kia Soul had with its bluetooth and mic equipped stereo. Nowadays I think most new cars have a pretty decent entertainment setup with an integrated back up camera, so it's no longer necessary to get something aftermarket.

That said, there was a time where aftermarket was remarkably better than factory stock.

MrMamiya ,

Backup cameras became required by law in 2016, so that is probably one of the reasons we don’t see a lot of aftermarket stuff now. Plus, there just isn’t a quality gap anymore. Want premium sound, pay $1,000 off top for Harmon Kardon.

I remember installing my alpine cd player and infinity 6x9’s in my 96 lumina. Man what a quality difference!

SpaceNoodle ,

My new car has Harmon Kardon speakers and a massage function. It’s like a mobile pleasure pod.

MrMamiya ,

I wish I had massage damn! I’d settle for a vehicle that’s not a truck that my thighs touch the seat though. I’m like 6’4” and all legs.

MrMamiya ,

I wish I had massage damn! I’d settle for a vehicle that’s not a truck that my thighs touch the seat though. I’m like 6’4” and all legs.

SpaceNoodle ,

I like VWs because they tend to fit my 6’5" frame. This ID.4 is by far the fanciest thing I’ve ever owned.

tierelantijntje ,

Backup cameras became required by law in 2016

That must be local to you, my 2019 car doesn’t have one and in my (European) country this is not mandatory.

wsweg ,

They’re referring to the US

MrMamiya ,

Ope, there I go forgetting the rest of the world exists again. Yeah it’s a US law.

pjhenry1216 ,

They're less prevalent because it's more expensive to do really well now, at least with modern cars. You'll really only see it in dedicated communities. I can't say if they rely on faceplate removal as a security measure though. Security measures have gotten much better since then.

oatscoop ,

Every car in the USA made since 2018 is required to have backup camera from the factory.

So since every car has to have a screen for the camera, auto makers figured they may as well use for the stereo system.

pjhenry1216 ,

This isn't entirely true. I have a backup camera and the audio system is still separate. Screens aren't all those giant dashboard ones. Some are small ones used to display simple data. Not even touchscreen.

kibiz0r ,

I’m only like 3 years removed from having a car with an aftermarket stereo. But yes, they do seem to be on the way out.

watson387 ,
@watson387@sopuli.xyz avatar

I bought a new car earlier this year and I don’t think I could replace the stereo even if I wanted to. It’s built into the dashboard. It’s like a touchscreen control panel that also has the heat settings and everything else in it. I love it and hate it at the same time.

How about letting sh.itjust.works take the place, because their shit seems to always just works.

CookieJarObserver ,

We have a uptime thats beyond reasonable, there were some smaller problems some days ago, but they just made things a little slower.

And Lemmyml is full of tankies.

There are however many other instances as well, being on many small ones eases the burden for all and makes single point of failure problems less likely.

JDubbleu ,

100% agree. I’m yet to notice programming.dev go down which makes sense when you consider the target demographic and that the admins probably fit right into it.

victron ,
@victron@programming.dev avatar

Zink ,

Once I made my non-world account here, Lemmy is like a whole new rock solid experience!

Combined with the choice in apps, even though they’re still evolving, it’s great.

victron ,
@victron@programming.dev avatar

Yeah, it’s incredible how your choice of instance can give you a completely different experience (in terms of stability). Still, you can sub to any community you want, so your instance is irrelevant, unless it’s defederated from a server you like.

Zink ,

Yeah, I think there’s a sweet spot in using a mid sized instance such as this. It’s big enough to have a bunch of users hitting communities all over the fediverse, and to have some resources dedicated to the server, but small enough to have its own identity and not be a target.

The magic happens because of how your home instance caches communities from other instances. So your experience depends on the reliability of the instance you’re using, but not so much the reliability of other instances(within reason).

ElPussyKangaroo ,

I love how this is now similar to when people would have usernames relevant to the conversation in Reddit.

Now, y’all just swoop in with the relevant instance 😂

static_motion ,

Which was part of my reasoning for joining there, along with the fact that I’m a dev myself so it aligns with my interests.

randint ,

If you think lemmy.ml is full of tankies, you should check out lemmygrad.ml and hexbear.net. They are a hundred times worse

CookieJarObserver ,

The two others are defederated by most because they are mostly actual commie nazis than anything else.

randint ,

I hope mine, lemm.ee, defederates from those instances too

CookieJarObserver ,

You can check that, bottom of the page and instances.

randint ,

I know that they have not been defederated from lemm.ee. I meant that I hope lemm.ee defederates from them in the future.

CookieJarObserver ,

Well, if not come to Shitjustworks, we defederated from lemmygrad (hexbear is basically irrelevant, I’ve never seen a post from there, just some idiots I’ve blocked)

randint ,

Thanks for the invitation. Though I’ve had plenty of unpleasant encounters with hexbears, I think I’ll stay on lemm.ee for now. Maybe I’ll move in the future when things get even worse.

Sh_ItDoesnt_Work ,

Hello from my new account at sh.itjust.works. I just created this, you can check my profile. I used a temp email: temp-mail[dot]org

After you sign up, you can change the email to some random invalid email so your account is safe from getting hijacked via password reset through email. Changing email doesn’t require re-verification as far as I can tell.

Perhaps your IP got flagged for some reason. Are you using a VPN or Tor? Those may trigger some spam filters. Is your network a public one? (Eg: University, Hospital, Workplace, etc.)

16bitvoid ,
@16bitvoid@lemmy.world avatar

I might be a bit dumb here, but I never got the detachable radio idea/need?

The radio interfaces were not exchangeable between different brands, right? Or was there an universal interface that I am unaware of?

Wouldn’t a bad actor need to dismantle the entire radio head as well, for the interface part to be of any good use?

youngalfred ,

It wasn’t so much to not steal the interface, it was to not steal the whole unit from the car.

If the front was left attached, a thief would break in and steal the whole radio.

With the front off, it’s basically useless to steal the in car part.

Num10ck ,

its anti theft because the unit doesnt work without the face and they were married with a code. car radio theft was rampant in the early 90s

oatscoop ,

Thieves would also steal the entire stereo head unit – so many had an additional anti-theft feature.

If you wanted to remove the head unit you had to enter a code using the front plate buttons before you uninstalled it. If you didn’t it would “brick” itself to discourage theft.
