LoamImprovement , in Willing to escort children out of the building for cash

I feel like I should point out, this woman did not lie on the resume. She teaches yoga to kids and does events for schools, she would absolutely have been qualified had this event not been the shitshow it was.

If I had a nickel for every time someone unwittingly became the face of something humorous we can all relate to, well I’d at least have a nickel more than what this job presumably paid her.

Good springboards today. Lemmy is starting to feel more alive don’t you think?

In all seriousness thank you for taking the time for a moral obligation. All things should be tempered and while humor is a great tool to distort the truth it should never completely obstruct it.

At the very least, here’s to trying to draw attention to your comment.

Some Willy Wonka experience thing in Glasgow. Entire event was AI generated apparently.

LoamImprovement ,

Oh man, where to begin? So there was an event advertised as an ‘immersive Willy Wonka’s Wonderland experience’ with all sorts of AI art and marketing:

amp.theguardian.com/…/glasgow-willy-wonka-experie…

The long and short of it was that the event, not officially licensed by WB (quelle fucking suprise) hosted in a dirty warehouse with little more than cheap props, tacky holiday ornaments and shower curtains, ended up being a complete shitshow. They gave each child, I shit you not, a couple (literally 0-3, dependent on how early your time slot was) jellybeans and half a cup of Tesco lemonade. No actual chocolate to be found in the entire chocolate-factory-themed event. The actors, including this poor woman, were hired and briefed literally the day before the event, handed 15 page AI-generated scripts that, predictably, made no fucking sense, including original characters like “the unknown,” and basically had to just wing it in poundland costumes. And like, in spite of it all, they really did give it their best effort, and from what I understand still haven’t been paid for their work.

Predictably, the event organizers ended up having to refund people for this sham of an event that they claim “failed to materialize.” Well of course it did, the people who were responsible for putting it together cooked up a dozen AI images and shat out a “legally distinct” script and thought it would all come together. Much like Fyre Festival, it’s another failure on the part of hucksters who do not understand that events require planning and don’t care to understand because they’re just trying to make a buck.

That sounds like bullshit though, the bullet would have the same speed when released from the shell in addition to speed generated by the blast in the shell. Did the plane fire and then accelerate enough to catch up to the bullet? That’s pretty convoluted and unlikely, you would have to actively try to shoot your own plane.

EDIT: The dumbass shot at a slight down angle and then engaged the afterburners. Skill Issue.

merc ,

Yeah, the initial velocity of the bullets would be the sum of the plane’s velocity plus whatever velocity the bullets gain coming out of the barrel.

But, what apparently happened is perfectly believable (if extremely unlucky). It’s not that the F-11 was faster than its bullets, it’s that it flew in a way that its path intersected the path of the bullets it had fired. As soon as the bullets left the barrel they would have started slowing down, eventually ending up on a ballistic trajectory. The F-11 would have stayed at approximately the same speed, but if the pilot hit the afterburners it would have sped up considerably.

Still, the likelihood of the speeding up plane hitting the slowing down bullets is extremely low.

Tech illiterate guy here. All these Ml models require training data, right? So all these AI companies that develop new ML based chat/video/image apps require data. So where exactly do they? It can’t be that their entire dataset is licensed, isn’t it?

If so, are there any firms that are using these orgs for data theft? How to know if the model has been trained on your data? Sorry if this is not the right place to ask.

Dkarma ,

You know how you look at a pic on the internet and don’t pay? The AI is basically doing the same thing only it’s collecting the effect of the data points ( like pixels in a picture) more accurately. The input no matter what it is only moves a set of weights. That’s all. It does not copy anything it is trained on.

Yes it can reproduce with some level of accuracy any work just like a painter or musician could replay a piece they see or hear.

Again, this is not theft any more than u hearing a Song or viewing a selfie.

jamyang ,

only it’s collecting the effect of the data points ( like pixels in a picture) more accurately

Isn’t that the entire point of creativity. though? What separates an artist from a bad painter is the positioning of pixels on a 2-Dimensional plane? If the model collects the positions of pixels together with the pixel RGB (color? Don’t know the technical term for it), then the model is effectively stealing the “pixel configuration and makeup” of that artist which can be reproduced by the said model anywhere if similar prompts were passed to it?

Dkarma ,

Focus. We are talking about copyright. Copyright doesn’t cover this at all.

Duke_Nukem_1990 ,

They are downloading the data so thei LLM can “view” it. How is that different than downloading movies to view them?

Dkarma ,

They’re not downloading anything tho. That’s the point. At no point are they posessing the content that the AI is viewing.

This is LESS intrusive than a Google web scraper. No one trying to sue Google for copyright for Google searches.

Duke_Nukem_1990 ,

What? Of course they are downloading, the content still has to reach their networks and computers.

Dkarma ,

Go look up how ai works. There is no download lol. It’s the exact same principal as web scrapers which have been around for literally decades.

Katana314 ,

Could say piracy is just running a program that “views” the content, and then regurgitates its own interpretation of it into local data stores.

It’s just not very creative, so it’s usually very close.

Dkarma ,

You could say that but you’d be wrong.downloading is a bitwise copy. Training isn’t even close to the same thing.

ruination ,

That’s one thing, but I think regurgitating it and claiming it as your own is a completely different thing.

ruination ,

Also, I’m pretty sure the argument is more about the unequal enforcement of the law. Copyright should be either enforced fairly or not at all. If AI is allowed to scrape content and regurgitate it, piracy should also be legal.

Dkarma ,

Again that’s not what’s happening here

    CleoTheWizard ,
    @CleoTheWizard@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly Rotten Tomatoes is basically useless when discussing film. I’ve been using Letterboxd for reviews and I get much more insight on if I’ll like the movie.

Because consider that people who post on RT are either snobs, frequent movie goers, or are emotional about the movie in some way. And a critics aggregate is an awful way to do anything which is why metacritic is useless most of the time.

What people should do is take some of their favorite movies or games or whatever and look up reviews. Find ones that you agree with. And then use those sites or people as sounding boards for new movies. If that doesn’t work, move on to the next critic till you find one whose perspective aligns with yours.

    rwhitisissle ,

If they aren’t doing that, report them to the city.

Good looking out for your neighbors, but don’t let your landlord neglect shit.

    Edit:

In the United States, the Americans with Disabilities act requires landlords to provide their tenants with a habitable place to live (because that’s what they’re paying for).

Additionally, if anyone slips and falls on a property, the owner is legally liable. Those are facts: It doesn’t matter how you feel about them, they are what they are.

Downvoting the person informing you won’t change anything.

That’s gotta be a local thing. I have a hard time seeing landlord snow removal making it into federal law (assuming you’re American).

    FartsWithAnAccent , (edited )
    @FartsWithAnAccent@lemmy.world avatar

If a disabled person lives there, then (in the US) landlords are legally obligated to provide the disabled renter with a habitable living space under the Americans with Disabilities act, which is federal.

It’s also worth pointing out, that anywhere in the US, if a person slips and falls on your property you (but mostly your insurance company probably) are responsible. So the landlord is open to additional liability there even if there are no local laws regarding snow removal simply because they are the owner of the property.

    Liz ,

Great point in that first paragraph. In the second paragraph, it’s my understanding that you can’t sue if there was no expectation of safety. If the path isn’t cleared in the slightest, then you’re not liable. I also know that in some areas the owner can just write into the lease “you guys have to clear the snow” and it becomes the tenant’s responsibility.

Anyway, fucking, clear your sidewalks people, be nice.

    FartsWithAnAccent ,
    @FartsWithAnAccent@lemmy.world avatar

You can sue for literally any reason you like in the US. Doesn’t guarantee success of course and you might even end up being liable for court costs in addition to your own lawyer (if you hire one) but even if the lawsuit fails, being sued is a pain in the ass to begin with so why even open up the opportunity? Just shovel the damn snow or hire someone to take care of it especially if you are renting to disabled people.

    verysoft ,

Dragons are much cooler than Wyverns, why do they keep getting dunked on like this :(

    SatanicNotMessianic ,

Wings evolve from legs though, generally speaking. This means that a four legged dragon with wings would have conceivably evolved from a six legged creature. You can get hand-wings or arm-wings, and we’re not entirely sure but think insect wings may have also evolved from legs or some other kind of similar structure.

But pretty much you can either have wings or legs/arms. You have to trade them in. That’s why the whole angel/demon thing doesn’t work either. The traditional harpies work but they’d be furry and not feathered. I haven’t worked out the wingspan for them but you could probably come up with a reasonable guess. They’d be more bat-people than bird-people, and I suspect that their chest areas would be less generously proportioned than is typically seen in the artwork. I’m not going more into the physics of that one though.

    denshirenji ,
    @denshirenji@lemmy.world avatar

None of these things exist so real life evolutionary biology doesn’t really have a place in this discussion, lol. Although you are correct.

Besides, since they are fictional you could just come up with some reason. Dolphins for instance have no legs, but still have the vestiges of them in the form of very small unconnected bones where their legs would be. They also have a dorsal fin on their backside and tiny little arms. So it stands to reason that, conceivably, wings could have evolved separately in a similar (note ‘a similar’ not ‘the same’) way to a dolphin’s dorsal fin.

You could jump from this concept (marrying real world evolutionary biology and fiction) and explain orc, trolls, etc… as ape descended life much the same as humans. Maybe merfolk evolved in the same way animals in the cetacea infraorder evolved from otter-like creatures. Maybe they have small unconnected bones for legs in much the same way that dolphins do.

There is a story in this, I can feel it.
