Only a matter of time before plant-based alternatives fully take over from meat. Meat farming is not sustainable, as you mention all the land used to farm food for animals could be used to just farm more food for us directly.

We just have to get rid of the stigma around plant-based "meat".

verysoft , (edited )

Prices are coming down, but they won't come down a lot until more people buy it, but more people wont buy it unless it's cheaper...

Here's hoping there's some more restrictions imposed on meat.

verysoft , (edited )

Yeah, so in typical modern day fashion get ready to lose functionality.

They often trade UX for "pretty" these days and I find most apps and websites horrible to use in comparison to 10+ years ago. Like everything has to be in a context menu for some reason now.

verysoft , (edited )

No... RCS is a protocol (from GSMA) anyone can implement, Google just spearheaded it and developed Jibe to make it easy for operators to implement, but by doing this it means Google gained a lot of control of it and added their own features to such as end-to-end encryption.

verysoft , (edited )

But one thing it also demonstrated was peoples will for power and recognition, no matter how small. They enjoy being mods, it makes them feel above others, so there will always be someone willing to trade morals to take the position.

verysoft ,

Just shows the lack of knowledge LTT have really. They just dont understand Fairphone at all, or even how people use phones apparently...

verysoft ,

Most average phone users don't give a shit about bezels, weight and stuff, they just buy whatever is put in front of them. If Apple came out with a new iPhone that was heavier, thicker bezelled, slower, people would still buy it because the truth is, they don't compare anything or look into it besides "this is the latest".

Speed is such a none issue, all mid-range phones are plenty fast enough for the very large majority of people. Buying flagship phones with the fastest SoCs is pointless to them, they will never get value from it - they just buy them because they are the latest "best shit you need" and they cost a lot more than a Fairphone.

Now the value of replacing a battery on the fly (whether broken or just for more juice) would actually be a lot higher, people used to do that in the past. The ability to repair the phone yourself wouldn't really matter to most, as they usually just take their phones to a repair shop anyway, but the cost of the repair would be lower.

The Fairphone has a great mission, one that all phones should be going after. They are expensive for what you are getting in terms of specifications, yes, but the company isn't large enough to make them any cheaper without sacrificing the point of them in the first place. It's fine to not want one, but comparing them to flagship phones, the same way you would compare an S24 to an iPhone 15, is actually unfair. Not to say you can't critise it, I think the software is the weak point and some issues were clearly highlighted, not unfixable though.

If price wasn't a factor and you just handed them to average people to use, then they would most likely be satisfied and would find value in it.

verysoft ,

If I have to contact support to do any mundane change to an account, my email usually begins with 'Delete my account'.

verysoft ,

Oh man I can see me putting some hours into this on Steam Deck!

verysoft ,

They just throw out any random shit and people click and watch it. LTTs quality dropped years ago when they got too big. It's about views now, not respectable content.

verysoft ,

Yes MKBHD is the same. Just loads of shill content to keep brands happy.

verysoft ,

Just ignore the "triple A" industry and games are usually great. Lots of small passionate studios still pumping out quality stuff.

verysoft ,

Ubisoft lost it after AC Brotherhood.

verysoft ,

Just another lesson to wait months after a games release before even considering it.

verysoft ,

Overall, good company. I wish they wouldn't have released BG3 in that state though, the game was very clearly still early access. All game developers should follow their philosophy though and the industry would be a better place.

verysoft ,

No I am referring to it's second early access release. They are getting on top of it now with these huge patches, so that's good, but it's just stuff that should have existed anyway and bugs that shouldn't have existed, they could have cooked it for another year. But releasing it does allow a lot more eyes on things, plus it's getting paid for the QA instead of paying for it, but keeping it marked as early access until it's cleaned up would have been nice.

verysoft ,

Its because the branching story was an illusion. You think you have the choice of what to do, with all the dialogue options, but ultimately the choice is the games and the closer you get to the end of the game the more apparent it becomes.

verysoft ,

I loved knocking out Mayrina's brothers, then going in telling her I just knocked them out, only for her to scream "THEY'RE DEAD?!" at me. Man the fucking hag questline was the most boring tedious shit in Act 1 for me.

verysoft , (edited )

There's no such thing. It's just milking people who are crazy enough to fall into the trap of buying them.
$30 is not a microtransaction, thats a macrotransaction, thats an entire other video game.

Free to play doesnt give a game a pass on predatory business tactics, they are free to play for one reason only... to sell you worthless pixels for ridiculous prices. F2P games are designed for that purpose and that purpose only.

But I agree that any paid game should have zero MTX, cosmetic or not. Industry is killing its creative aspect with all this monetisation shit.

verysoft ,

Is overtime in this sport an extra hour of ads and 5 minutes of actual play?

verysoft ,

Saying please to an AI is funny to me. But I guess I will be the first to die in the robot uprising.

Or maybe saying please got you the correct answer and it's a lesson to always use your manners!

verysoft ,

Game is boring. Ubisoft somehow eclipsing EA at shitting the bed in every aspect.

verysoft ,

An overpriced VR headset.

verysoft ,

Most modern headsets have passthrough, its not some new feature. It is the part that Apple focused on though.

verysoft ,

If they are, then this vision pro is truly extortion.

VR requires a bit of setup, which is off putting. I dont have the space to have mine out all the time, theres also a shortage of high quality games. Waiting on Valve to push the envelope again.

verysoft ,

Its not AR, an AR headset is something like HoloLens, this is just a VR headset with your eyes on the front.

This was a mistake in their wording, the next Subnautica will be like the others, they simple meant it will receive updates for a time after, just like the other ones did. There won't be any battle pass or mtx bullshit.
Edit, link: https://unknownworlds.com/subnautica/an-update-about-the-next-subnautica/

verysoft , (edited )

It's not becoming GaaS, they just meant it will receive updates like the current ones did, was a mistake in wording.

I hope it's more like Subnautica and not Below Zero too, having a silent protagonist explore a world and uncover story was far more fun than full voice acted characters. Not the mention how broken the BZ story was and how the world never made you feel uneasy like the original did.

Edit, link: https://unknownworlds.com/subnautica/an-update-about-the-next-subnautica/

verysoft ,

https://unknownworlds.com/subnautica/an-update-about-the-next-subnautica/ :)

I thought the soundtrack was good on it's own (I love Ben Prunty's music), but it did not fit the game.
The way the music and audio design in-general in the first game all fit together so well is what made half the experience.

And yeah...
::: spoiler spoiler
you go down to find out what happens to your sister, then that becomes a side quest you can forget about and you fuck off with a random alien :')

They haven't fucked us over so far with DLC, MTX or any bullshit with their previous entries, so no reason to believe they will do here, they are very open with their development and talking to the community. So until they actually screw us over, it's unfair to pretend we are being.

It just sounds like a miscommunication/misuse of the term by KRAFTON, Unknown Worlds then came out to clarify. We will just have to wait and see, we can get actually angry once we know there's going to be some bullshit involved.

The only current downside to the next Subnautica is that it's going to be built on UE5, I just hope they manage to avoid all the shortcuts.

verysoft ,

A lot of UE games are low performance or use shit features (like TAA). You can make something which "looks good" quickly with the engine and a lot of devs do just that instead of taking their time to tweak things for better performance or visual fidelity. So instead we get stuck with blurry messes.

verysoft ,

Yeah they advertise no ads, but then have referral links to Kayak in their app. Seems like the main devs have gone off their rockers.

verysoft ,

I expected Mozilla to implement this, I don't know how they expect to get marketshare by just following in Google's footsteps every step of the way.
Is Firefox it's own browser or just Chrome with a different engine? Even Apple support jxl, well the decoding anyway.

verysoft ,

I know, it was a rhetorical question given the stance they take on a lot of things always aligning with what Google wants.

verysoft ,

It was a tongue in cheek, rhetorical question, regarding what I said before it.

verysoft ,

People develop brand loyalty and do their advertisimg for them. Apple has always had a cult following and that is what you are seeing here.

verysoft ,

That country is fucked up. You people really have to come together and demand universal healthcare, as impossible as that sounds.

verysoft ,

I know right? He was suddenly hyped up so much, I guess it's one way to sell games. I'd understand if it was Miyamoto or something, but the man made Metal Gear and not everyone has even heard of that.
He was heavily pushed with geoff keighley's the game awards partnership he made.

verysoft ,

He takes no more 'experimental swings' than hundreds of indie developers. The only difference is, his studio has the money for the marketing campaigns.

verysoft ,

Aha, yeah I realise my mistake now. I was tired so I will let myself off.

verysoft ,

He was though, some people might have known his name from Metal Gear, but majority of people didnt. Then TGA and Death Stranding rolled around and suddenly we were told we should care.

Raspberry Pi is planning a London IPO, but its CEO expects “no change” in focus (arstechnica.com)

The business arm of Raspberry Pi is preparing to make an initial public offering (IPO) in London. CEO Eben Upton tells Ars that should the IPO happen, it will let Raspberry Pi’s not-for-profit side expand by “at least a factor of 2X.” And while it’s “an understandable thing” that Raspberry Pi enthusiasts could be...

verysoft ,

That explains a lot if this was their plan. RIP Raspberry Pi.

Microsoft stole my Chrome tabs, and it wants yours, too (www.theverge.com)

Last week, I turned on my PC, installed a Windows update, and rebooted to find Microsoft Edge automatically open with the Chrome tabs I was working on before the update. I don’t use Microsoft Edge regularly, and I have Google Chrome set as my default browser. Bleary-eyed at 9AM, it took me a moment to realize that Microsoft...

verysoft ,

To be fair, chromium aside, edge did start as a nice browser, but as with all MS products, they end up getting riddled with more and more bullshit over time.

Just use Firefox.

Wot The Fsck You Say, Spotify? (lemmy.world)

Edit: A couple times I’ve said eBook while I actually meant Audiobook. I’ve learned that Spotify has a 15 hour limit per month for their free ‘included in premium’ audiobooks. However these are the two books I listened to for free, and even rounding up to 13 hours it doesn’t make sense, unless they count accidental...

verysoft ,

Convenient, easy to use, available everywhere.

verysoft ,

People keep reading their tweets and clicking on the articles.

verysoft ,

Mmm yeah, The Berlin Interpretation is way too specific, things like the graphics/grid etc. If some game fits more than half the factors, perhaps that should be considered 'like' enough? But I do understand why people can get anal about some games being categorised as Roguelike when they are infact not very similar at all.

I think it boils down to genre being misused in general, there's games with large open spaces called Open World, when they are not really, games that are called MMO when they are not. RPG games that are not actually RPG etc etc etc. Rogue fans just made a bigger deal out of it.
