JackbyDev , in Debate

Jenny was sexually abused as a child and believed she was sexually abusing Forrest. This is why at the end Forrest tells her “I may not be a smart man, but I know what love is.” He’s telling her that their relationship was consensual and that she was not taking advantage of him.

It’s fine if you still believe she’s an asshole to Forrest, but most folks don’t understand this context.

qwertyqwertyqwerty ,

You somehow managed to more efficiently cover the entire point of the copypasta about Jenny from Reddit. Bravo.

Thanks, I try to be terse.

downpunxx ,

downpunxx ,
@downpunxx@kbin.social avatar

I lied, and was afraid you'd be mad that lied, so I kept your baby from you and kept lying, yeah, shitty fucking human

rebelappliance ,

Yeah well we can try to understand each other and our motivations and what makes us human or we can simply judge others and get angry and call people names. Jenny thought Forest was mentally retarded (to use an antiquated term). So no she’s not going to pursue a relationship and no she’s not gonna entrust her child to him even tho objectively she should have she simply did not have the perspective the audience does. So she made a lot of bad decisions because she never was shown the right ones. And at least she learned from her mistakes.

Akagigahara ,

Honestly, with that reading I think she didn’t tell him, because she didn’t want to be a burden to him, especially when he got somewhat “successful”. She only told him after she was dying, knew she couldn’t abuse him for long, if ever. On top of that, where would the sun actually have gone? Doubt her relationship with her parents or her family was anywhere close to stable, so she chose someone she knew would love and care for the child. The other option probably would’ve been foster care, which, as most probably know, is a horrible experience

JackbyDev ,

I’m not making an argument as to why folks should not view her as an asshole, I’m pointing out an aspect of the character many people overlook. If anything I’m only saying she’s less of an asshole. I haven’t watched the movie in a long time to definitively say if she truly is or isn’t an asshole. Like I said, it’s still fine with me if folks believe she is.

kryptonianCodeMonkey ,

We should also acknowledge that, not only did she wait until she was dying to tell Forrest about their son, there’s also every possibility in the world that she was lying about him being the father in the first place.

As far as we are shown, they only had sex one time. Meanwhile she had recently arrived afteryears of a destructive and careless lifestyle including sexual promiscuity. And after they had sex, she left the next morning. It’s not impossible, but the odds that her pregnancy resulted from her one night with Forrest, rather than her sexual partners before (or after) she showed up at the plantation, are pretty low. Especially given Forrest Jr. did not inherit any of Forrest’s mental handicaps (an is in fact of higher than average intelligence).

The odds that she was dying, didn’t have any clue who the actual bio-dad was, and so lied to and used her handicapped, lonely, yet wealthy childhood friend as a means to secure her child’s future regardless of his paternity, though, is way higher. None of that is confirmed, obviously, but… it doesn’t look great.

JackbyDev ,

Especially given Forrest Jr. Did not inherit any of Forrest’s mental handicaps

Did they ever specify any conditions he had? I see zero evidence that it was hereditary. Just because something “doesn’t look great” doesn’t mean it is true. It’s not supposed to look good. It’s supposed to look bad. The film is not trying to absolve Jenny in that moment.

kryptonianCodeMonkey ,

Seemed to be a general learning disability. A parent with a learning disability is more likely to have a child with a learning disability. It’s not necessarily hereditary, and I’m not saying someone with a learning disability can’t have a gifted child. But given the whole set of circumstances, it just compounds the likelihood that Forrest is not Forrest Jr.'s biological father. It’s not impossible that he is, but it’s far from a certainty.

It feels so weird to see her character compared to cartoonishly evil ones like Darth Vader and the Joker. When watching the movie she is clearly a very damaged person, her character is tragic. The way she treats Gump makes sense, her culture is intensely ableist which combined with her trauma provides context to her actions. The idea that she is somehow a bigger asshole than a domestic terrorist with no concrete backstory, a serial killer, or even evil space jesus, is ridiculous. Frankly it reeks of casual sexism whenever I see people smear her, it feels like folks are either parrotting the opinions they found online, or never tried to understand her character while watching the movie.

JackbyDev ,

Listen, we all know Darth Vader may have used the threat of genocide to get Leia to talk… And he may have even lied and done it anyways… And just the general idea of genocide and destroying a planet is awful… But have you considered women bad?

Wikipedia has a good article on it, including photos of what the marks look like. They’re practically invisible to the naked eye, getting them to show up usually requires additional steps like taking high quality scans and running them through some color filters, or using a UV light.

From the EFF coverage of it, it sounds like every laser printer probably prints these marks now. I’m not sure if inkjets or other printer types do or not.

The way I see it, Musk is only going to provide the investment if it fits into his investment portfolio strategy. With $2 billion, I would give $1 billion to charities, and the other $1 billion I would use to purchase as many American Southeastern coast beach houses as possible. I would sell the beach houses to climate denialists at half-off, instantly losing $500 million in the process. I’d keep the $500 million from the house sales to myself, because Musk knows that some money has to be kept to keep the lights on. The purchasers of the houses would slowly watch as their new investments into their houses literally goes into the ground (er, or oceans, as it is in this case).

I figure Musk can’t resist an offer this good. My genius then continues to go unchallenged, except for Musk, who can somehow tank investments faster than this.

Fun Fact: Every single Exe today still checks prior to running whether it is Barbie Riding Club (1998) or can it run normally?

Because when you update your OS and your game breaks - you don’t blame Hasbro, you blame Windows every time. You can’t just call up Sierra Games and ask them to update - they don’t exist anymore and so you must carry everything forward - bugs included.

SeventySeven ,

That fact does seem really fun and interesting. Why barbie? Got any links so I can read up on it?

tweeks ,

I googled a bit, and perhaps this statement comes from this old Reddit thread here in the first comments.

There it’s mainly used as a joke to describe how Windows is just very backwards compatible in general. The story might have stuck and warped a bit as like it really had a reference to that Barbie game.

QuaternionsRock ,

Well, I did find this.

tweeks ,

I couldn’t find a reference to Barbie in your link, or am I missing something?

QuaternionsRock ,

No, I’m just saying that compatibility databases do seem to exist, and the existence of “custom” ones implies that there is a built-in one. It wouldn’t be surprising to find out that Barbie and about a million other widespread legacy executables are in there.

drathvedro ,

I know there was an old hack for simcity but I’ve never heard about barbie. I’ve checked and the claim seems to come from (now removed) @pwnallthethings twitter account. What he refers to there is that Windows indeed maintains a compatibility database, which, unlike the normal compatibility menu, allows more compatibility tweaks and works entirely automatically. On my fresh win11 install, the compatibility administrator tool lists a few hundred compatibility shims and thousands of apps listed, with “Barbie Adventure Riding Club” indeed being one of them

brbposting ,
CynicRaven ,

I found the mind share that Apple enjoys makes this kind of inverted when things don’t run right on OSX or iOS whereas android is more in the Windows boat.

Gestrid ,

it’s why you can’t name files certain names such as CON

To expand on this: The reason you can’t name files CON, etc., is because of a program from the 1960s called Peripheral Interchange Program (PIP), a program used in Digital Equipment Corporation’s computers. The overall OS that PIP was part of was called CP/M.

DOS, which came out in the 80s and was made for IBM computers, was modeled after CP/M, and it kept and expanded the capabilities of PIP.

Then Microsoft came along and created a modified version of DOS called MS-DOS which IBM started using.

Eventually, Microsoft created Windows 95, merging two initially separate products: MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows. Microsoft left in the code for handling CON, etc., but they hadn’t put in any limitations for filenames, which caused some bugs. So, from the next version of Windows onward, they disallowed the ability for anything to name a folder or file “CON”, among other related things.

So the reason you can’t name a file or folder “CON” is because of a 60-year-old file-copying program nobody uses anymore.

Gabu ,

At some point last year I had a Japanese program launch a popup window that was clearly from pre-NT Windows. So bizarre.

meowMix2525 ,

That looks to be an Access prompt, from the MS office suite. If you’ve ever written a macro you know how ancient the UI looks behind the scenes with those apps, and this isn’t even a main line office app since it deals with databases and they push excel to work with sets of data like that.

So yes it’s a Microsoft product, but it’s not really native Windows and it’s not an app that makes a lot of sense to spend a lot of time developing.

Just for accuracy’s sake. I’m certain there are better examples.

Anyways, I’m perfectly fine with dated UI as long as it’s efficient and does what it’s supposed to do. If they perfected this stuff way back when you had one chance to ship out a working product, is it really necessary to reinvent the wheel just for aesthetics? Cause that’s how you get a neutered settings app instead of a fully functional control panel.

Gestrid ,

Yes, actually.

Well, it’s more like they update the old stuff and still add new stuff on top of it. That way, generally speaking, Windows can remain compatible with older programs.

I liked seeing what new products or services are out there, or deals I may have not known about otherwise; but advertisers have taken it so far that you can’t have a reasonable amount anymore. You either block it all or get bombarded relentlessly.

I wouldn’t even use an ad blocker if the ads weren’t disrupting the content I’m actually here to see. YouTube for example was fine when it just had banner ads around the video player; as soon as they started forcing you to watch video ads to be able to watch the actual video you came there for is when it became a problem to me.

Who is misgendering anyone in the comment you replied to? They clearly edited their comment at some point, as they posted 29 minutes ago while you replied six hours ago, but what is up right now has no gendered terms at all. Did they remove that language?

OurToothbrush ,

You know how you can misgender trans people by claiming that they’re faking being trans right? That’s what it comes down to when they claim we aren’t supportive of lgbt people/faking being lgbt.

gowan ,
@gowan@reddthat.com avatar

I wasn’t aware that would be misgendering them however the comment as posted states faking supporting LGBT people which is different than what you are claiming here. I am asking if they altered the comment in any way that would make your claims logical or did you just misread them?

I’m in Europe, and work for an American company. After a few issues in production, they tried to implement an on-call requirement for employees to check the alerts during their out of work hours (5am to 10pm or something stupid like that). I just reminded them that my country has the “Right to disconnect” law, which protects us from having to work outside our required hours.

They changed it to volunteer basis. I refuse to volunteer (because my off time is my time).

chiwiu ,
@chiwiu@lemmy.world avatar

When I was younger, I also though I’d be cool to work in America, but once you learn a bit about their conditions, it’s a big nope. Much better lifestyle in small cities with an average salary in EU and the 23 days vacation + 13 - 14 bank holidays. Mental health checks out. 😄

About the Prod on calls, even if you “volunteer”, depending on the country and kind of job, they have to paid those “on call” hours even if there’s no calls at the end, and if there’s work required, the pay is higher.

I’m like you, I wouldn’t exchange my free time no matter what. 🤘

Buckshot ,

Years ago now I was asked to be on call for a week, 24/7 outside working hours. I was told it would be paid. Being naive I thought I’d be paid at my normal rate.

Turns out the on call rate was based on the likelihood of being called and this project was deemed to be low, after tax I got less than £10 extra for the whole week. It was something like 14 pence an hour.

They had a whole load of restrictions on my life as well, couldn’t be more than an hour from the office, couldn’t be drunk, had to answer the phone within a minute at all times and be able to get on my laptop within 5 minutes.

Refused to do it again after that first week and they ended up having to pay a contractor £400/week instead.

BirdyBoogleBop ,

Were you in the UK? if so they robbed you. They need to pay at least minimum wage in the UK even for on call. You are also allowed rest breaks. What they did was unbelievably criminal. Hell if that overtime included times where you were asleep and you were still on call they still need to pay you the National minimum wage for those hours as well.

Only part that wasn’t illegal is the extra restrictions, as you are still working so you can’t exactly treat it as a day off.

I know it should be obvious but had to read twice to realize there would be a “/s” at the end. Some employers or at least HR/PR teams honestly believe that every word you just mocked is the actual nature of employment, while those same managers pull all kinds of BS to pinch every penny they can and then leave before the ship sinks if the company doesn’t turn into a monopoly zombie like EA.

(For those wondering how Electronic Arts is a “monopoly zombie”, think about how long most companies that become like EA - when it comes to being greedy and stingy - actually last. A few years at best. Yet EA has 50 years under it’s belt? That happened because they have/had a monopoly on official sports leagues, Maxis-created gameplay styles, the Star Wars IP (until Disney bought it), and the Mass Effect IP that they ruined the 3rd and onwards games of.

In short, don’t feed the zombie. Don’t buy Sports video games until the collapse of that genre kills the Madden and FIFA EA franchises, and buy games like NewCity, Urbek City Builder, Elysian Eclipse, Alterlife, or Cities Skylines if you liked Sim City/The Sims/Spore.

As for Mass Effect, maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t see much hope for that franchise’s legacy. EA’s execs probably think “oh, we made a 33% profit off of those first two loss leaders” before anything else when you mention it in any way to them, which just feels like a punch in the gut to the tune of “your choices never really mattered” that are currently popular plot twists for games.)

PersnickityPenguin ,

Now lets talk about unpaid “internships.”

simple ,
@simple@lemmy.mywire.xyz avatar

No, or at least not initially.

When I brought up the “Right to disconnect”, I also asked about overtime. They said it won’t be compensated, but they’ll think about it in the future.

Regardless, unless its really well compensated, I don’t plan on doing it. I’m not really pressed for money, so I value free time over money.

A few years back, a company where a friend of mine worked was bought up by an american company. I do not know why they didn’t do their research beforehand, but the new american owners announced they would be expecting the newly bought company to adopt an american work culture. Almost everyone quit. My friend is a programmer. He got a new job offer almost before he was out of the door.

CoriolisSTORM88 ,

It’s amazing that I work for a large European company in America and am forced to accept calls or come into the plant 24/7.

It’s almost like it has to come from a government to make corporations behave.

I have colleagues that have their out of offices set to “I’ll be available by cell or email” or somesuch. Mine doesn’t say anything, and I don’t check it unless I want to. My vacation time is MY time.

BigNote ,

Either the government does it or you join a union. I am a member of a large construction trade union and it’s written into our contract that we cannot be denied time off and can’t be forced to be available during off hours or made to work overtime.

The catch is that if you want to advance in the company it really helps if you can make a little extra effort. You absolutely will never be penalized for sticking to the minimum requirements, but you also will never move up into management, which is perfectly fine with a lot of people.

knobpolisher ,

I work in tech, in a datacenter, and godamn this whole industry needs to be unionized. Between all the servers/etc serviced from the hot aisle (which is constantly more than 100F), no structured cabling anywhere, and a lack of sane standards that actually serve a purpose… Yeah I should get a different job

uis ,
@uis@lemmy.world avatar

Or start union. Or join one.

ludwig , (edited )

Not defending them, but I assume it’s the American bosses implementing what they think is normal.

If a company wants to keep policy in other countries it has to make it very clear to each branch, otherwise they will forget or not care about the policy.

alvanrahimli ,

Yes. It totally has to come from the government. No way companies alone will do any good for their employees and respect their time.

Take the 6 or 8 can holder plastic thingy (that turtles and fishes always get tangled up). In the EU, it is forbidden to use them. So, companies like Coca cola don’t implement them. But in the US, there are no laws stating that, so they continue selling with that shit.

Without the government backing them, employees are just numbers in sheets for companies. Nothing more.

banneryear1868 ,

This is just how it is in Canada too, at least in Ontario we have a recent “right to disconnect” law. Whenever I work with US tech companies and have to leave for a meeting they’re like “oh we can just continue this on the weekend or after hours” and I’m just like okay but I work 9-4 so I won’t be there.

BigNote ,

It’s the same in the US if you’re unionized. My union operates in Canada too and from what I’ve been told our contracts are pretty similar, apart from pay scale varying by district council and currency.

banneryear1868 ,

I’m unionized in Canada as well as a power sector worker, although I work in IT. The contract negotiations are very compensation-focused not necessarily focused on enhancing what is already law.

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

Incel as a term describes something much more specific than “virgin (but they don’t want to be).” That may be the literal meaning of the words, but like, we all know that the Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea is not democratic, people’s, or a republic.

Incel, the way it’s typically used, describes a particular type of person who’s embittered by their long-lasting virginity, and because of that, views most or all members of the opposite sex as lesser than them, believing that they’re in some way owed sex, and have been denied that ‘right.’

OmnipotentEntity ,
@OmnipotentEntity@beehaw.org avatar

The word “incel” colloquially covers quite a bit more territory than its acronym expansion implies, much like MAGA means quite a bit more than just a collective of individuals who want to see America succeed. But of course you know this, so why exactly are you asking?

DeepGradientAscent ,
@DeepGradientAscent@programming.dev avatar

But of course you know this, so why exactly are you asking?

No. I don’t. That’s why I’m asking.

I thought incel was an abbreviation for an involuntary celibate person, male or female, who genuinely can’t have sex for a plethora of potential reasons. Since the word “involuntary” is part of the abbreviation, to me, that means the person who’s celibate can’t help it.

For what it’s worth, I’m on the spectrum, and one aspect of my neuropathy is that I over-emphasize strict definitions of words etymologically and need to have strict meaning in communication. I perceive people using fluid or inaccurate definitions for words as a vehicle for hostile manipulation and malicious intent.

I am in therapy for this, but I’m skeptical CBT or drugs can rectify how I interpret linguistic nuance.

voidMainVoid ,

Of course! If you aren’t getting laid, it’s clearly because you’re a terrible person.

SatansMaggotyCumFart ,

But if you are getting laid that means at least one other person can stand you.
