AI generated csam is still csam.

Idk, with real people the determination on if someone is underage is based on their age and not their physical appearance. There are people who look unnaturally young that could legally do porn, and underage people who look much older but aren’t allowed. It’s not about their appearance, but how old they are.

With drawn or AI-generated CSAM, how would you draw that line of what’s fine and what’s a major crime with lifelong repercussions? There’s not an actual age to use, the images aren’t real, so how do you determine the legal age? Do you do a physical developmental point scale and pick a value that’s developed enough? Do you have a committee where they just say “yeah, looks kinda young to me” and convict someone for child pornography?

To be clear I’m not trying to defend these people, but it seems like trying to determine what counts legal/non-legal for fake images seems like a legal nightmare. I’m sure there are cases where this would be more clear cut (if they ai generate with a specific age, trying to do deep fakes of a specific person, etc), but a lot of it seems really murky when you try to imagine how to actually prosecute over it.

Other people are making good counter arguments, so I’m just going to address one bit:

You can also look at how despite charging a 12% platform fee, Epic Games Store does not sell games 18% cheaper.

Epic hasn’t been running their game store for very long, and they’ve been operating it at a loss to secure market share. They lose hundreds of millions of dollars a year on their store. This is mostly due to them buying exclusive rights to games, but my point is that the EGS is not a successful, self sustaining business. Epic taking a 12% cut doesn’t mean that 12% is enough money, because their whole business model is about losing money to attract users.

You also have to remember that the storefront cut is an upfront cost with an unclear long-term cost. Valve is promising to always host the game and cover the bandwidth for every future download and update, no matter how many updates or how many times someone downloads it. Not to mention that they also will host mods, provide matchmaking, video streaming, and many other benefits.

@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

A few reasons:

  • I feel like any other major company with Steam’s marketshare would be far less consumer friendly than steam.
  • Steam funnels a lot of money into Linux, and Linux is very popular on Lemmy. If you use Linux, you are benefiting from Steam’s success.
  • Steam is just nice to use, and has good deals. It’s nice to have my games in one place, and I don’t know if any other storefront with as many nice user benefiting features as steam.

I know there was an issue not long ago where Sopuli had to defederate from kbin for awhile. Kbin had a federation bug that was endlessly spamming federation updates and it was causing Sopuli to fall behind on federation.

Mbin had a fix up pretty quick, but several attempts to reach the Kbin admin all failed.

Reddit in 2010-2012 also had a lot of really insufferable atheists everywhere. Someone would say something like “thank god everyone’s ok” and get downvoted while a bunch of people replied stuff like “if god is responsible for them being ok, then he would also be responsible for the crash and shouldn’t be thanked at all”.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

I maybe didn’t use the best example, but it was less about people actually being religious and instead if they used any sort of popular phrasing that had any slight religious element they would try to turn it into a religion debate.

A better example is that someone might post a polish word, someone else would reply “bless you” acting like the polish word was a sneeze sound, and then the 14-year-old atheists would descend and start a debate.

I have enough games in my steam library that I could never buy another game, and be perfectly content. I’m quite willing to wait as long as it takes for a game to not only be brought to steam, but to get a major sale or be featured in a game bundle. Only difference is that if it takes too long, I’ll never get it at all because I’ll have better options.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

So, just Rimworld then.

Not rimworld specifically, but when I was younger I played the hell out of my games. I would replay them over and over, finding every secret. Big RPGs already take a long time to beat, but I would do multiple playthroughs as different classes and play styles.

These days I have less time and way more games. There’s a part of me looking for an excuse to not buy any interesting new game because I feel guilty about all the great games I own and haven’t played, and the games I have played I’ve only played once and haven’t “finished”.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

Yeah, I almost bought $20 worth of bitcoin when it was $.008 a bitcoin, which would be worth $168,000,000 today.

But realistically I would have cashed out a long time ago, so it would have been far less significant. I had some friends who bought at the same time though, one bought a car and the other got a healthy downpayment for his house.

After using Kagi a few months I’ve switched to Brave, and been pretty happy with it. It can be low on image results, but for regular web results I haven’t needed anything else.

Kagi was pretty good, but it didn’t really seem good enough compared to Brave search to justify $10 a month.

If steam did allow transfers this way, I can imagine it being a new type scam where people fabricate death documents to steal steam accounts.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

Oh for sure, but it’s definitely a concern for stuff like this. It’s a lot easier for valve to just expect people to pass login info down as a way to pass on an account.

Valve actually migrating purchases from one account to another risks upsetting publishers, and requires whole new policies on how to verify death and verify who should receive the account. Finally there’s the risk of scams and having to resolve them. Overall it’s a lot of headache for valve, I’m not surprised they’re not jumping to offer it officially.

SpaceX is still making tremendous progress compared to NASA. I’m as annoyed with Musk as everyone else, but it’s looking like they’re the biggest hope we have right now of actually making progress with space exploration.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

This is focused more on NASA’s problems with the Artemis program, but I highly recommend reading this article.

Basically the whole Artemis mission plan is riddled with issues, and SpaceX and Blue Origin are required to have major breakthroughs in space refueling tech for their required roles to even be possible. With how many different issues the project has, it looks like the only good thing we may get out of the project is these breakthroughs (if they happen).

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

This is just steam titles in the verified program. Protondb has 21k steam games that are reported working, and there’s also non-steam games and emulation.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

Yeah. They probably work fine on the deck too, but they can only verify so many games and those are low priority.

Fubarberry ,

Brave does have an option to use anonymous Google results as a fallback if their index doesn’t return enough results, but it will ask you before it does it.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

Problem is that regular Google results are also getting worse. Google has to change something about search, and they’re most worried about chatgpt being a better alternative to Google search.

I’d be happy to help out, but I’m on the Sopuli instance. I believe lemmy fixed the issues where you couldn’t moderate a community unless you were on the same instance, but I haven’t actually tried yet. I currently moderate !steamdeck

If you find good mods from lemmy.ml feel free to pick them over me, I just wanted to offer my help.

I feel kinda bad for the voice actor they used. Her voice was (potentially) going to be famous as the “AI” voice (similar to Siri), and instead that won’t happen because she happens to sound like Scarlet Johanson.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

Stadia was pretty cool honestly, it just never caught on, and it’s game library couldn’t compete with other platforms.

It was magical feeling though, just being able to play any game from my library in anything with a screen. Any Chromecast, Chromebook, old PC, phone, tablet, etc. They could all run any game, and you could switch between them at any time if someone else needed the TV or something like that.

It made it easy to imagine a future where you don’t worry about how to play a game, or ever spend money on a new console or upgrades, or ever have to delete games so you can wait to download another game. You just think “I want to play this game on this screen” and it works.

Fubarberry ,

Decibels are a logarithmic scale, so it scales exponentially. Because of this, reducing by just ten is actually very significant and would reduce the perceived volume by half, and would reduce the actual sound pressure even more than half.

It’s a backend identification, likely used to target advertising in the future.

I’m torn between my dislike of the CCP, and really wanting an EV for $12k.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

I don’t think it will, at least not to the extent that some past tech trends like blockchain did. Right now companies are still in the “throw AI at everything and see what works” phase, which will definitely pass. But even if AI never improves from this point I still suspect it will find a permanent place being used for generating spam and porn.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

From reading the article, I get the impression that this bill is mostly about them wanting to be able to arrest protesters who wear masks to hide their identity.

Which is still really shitty, to be clear.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

Right, but any kind of “you can’t wear a mask in public” law is easily evaded if there’s a legal exception for wearing one for health reasons.

Only 1-3% of people lack the ability to visualize images in their head.

Somewhat related, I recently realized I can’t really remember the taste of food at all. I can remember the texture of the food, and whether I liked it or not, but not how it actually tastes. For example, I know I like chocolate but I have no desire to eat it most of the time because I can’t remember anything about the taste except for the texture. But once I start eating chocolate and have the taste lingering in my mouth, I find myself craving more of it until the taste fades and I forget what it tasted like again.

I’m not really sure if I count as having an inner voice thinker or not. I definitely use an inner voice when composing verbal/written thoughts, and when I’m trying to remember something specific. However trying to pay attention to my inner thought process makes it seem like my thoughts are mostly non-verbal with occasional sporadic words thrown in? It feels like the more relaxed I am the fewer words there are.

Cheaper

Isn’t the Ally a lot more expensive than the Deck?

easier to use

I’d also question this, obviously everyone’s familiar with windows but the handheld experience is pretty rough when compared with SteamOS.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

To be fair, that’s the low power Ally with a pretty significant 20% off sale.

I’m not well educated on the power difference, but a quick google search shows the cheaper Ally gets about 60% the benchmarked performance of the more expensive Ally when plugged in. There’s also a significant drop when not plugged in, but less severe (only about a 20% drop in fps). Source

I suppose the real question is how does it compare to a Steam Deck at that price, and if the drop in power is worth the price difference.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

Windows is less of a “walled garden”, and more like a shared garden where the other gardener is really inconsiderate and will mess up your part of the garden whenever it doesn’t align with their vision.

Why have a max number of kids at all? From what I hear, China desperately needs more kids.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

From what I understand, the one child policy tanked their birthrate so much that the country is expected to never recover. Current economies are basically dependent on a growing population to support the elderly and retired members of the population. Countries can somewhat get by through immigration to prop up a low birthrate, but that can only take you so far.

I think Sony just delisted Ghost of Tsushima from all countries where PSN isn’t available, even though it’s primarily a single player game that won’t require PSN.

So Sony is still on their bullshit, even though they conceded over Helldivers.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

On android, I would recommend using Stealth or Geddit to browse reddit. Stealth has a mode where it scrapes old.reddit.com (and bypasses the API), and Geddit uses the RSS feed to pull content instead of API.

Downside is neither app will let you interact, but I don’t have any desire to generate content for reddit anyways.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

They’ve been working since the API price change, so nearly a year now.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

Unpopular opinion, but the extra “iss” is unnecessary for reading the word, and with this being a newspaper article they have limited headline space.

Clearly this is just efficient debloating of the article title.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

It’s important that people who gave a negative review over PSN go back and change their review now. If the community shows that review scores will go back to positive after getting what we want, it will make other companies in the future more willing to give up unpopular decisions.

Also the devs deserve a good review score from what I’ve seen, this wasn’t really their fault and I wouldn’t want them to suffer any more for it.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

That’s a valid point.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

It’s important that there’s a benefit to them giving up something they wanted. If the reviews don’t get better after they gave up forcing PSN, then Sony would have been better off keeping the requirement. Other companies would look at this situation, and think that once Sony made the initial mistake, they would have been better off doubling down instead of backing off.

You’re wanting this to be an example of “don’t make stupid corporate decisions or you’ll get punished”, but that I’m very confident that companies will still make stupid decisions because they’re so out of touch they don’t realize their ideas are stupid. Instead it’s easier to get good results with situations like this if companies see that there’s a way out: to do what the people want and get their review score back.
