These screens aren’t usually touch-sensitive, no? I don’t usually fill up at Valero’s, but those buttons on the side are often used because the screens aren’t designed for touch. I’m in a cold climate though, so maybe they just don’t use them here…

You obviously haven’t been talking to servers that make $200 a night in cash tips they don’t pay taxes on. My fiancé works in marketing for a large winery, and some of the kids they would bring in to work the restaurant would be making tons of money from it. Those are the people who love it

You’ve never gotten into an argument with someone who says they tip their mechanic and doctor and thinks everybody should do the same?

There absolutely are people in the US who believe that everybody you interact with as a customer should be tipped because they believe all the propaganda from the likes of Readers Digest and Wall Street Journal. They believe everybody must be tipped because covid and “How are those jobs any different from being a server? It’s a SERVICE!” It’s beyond ridiculous. I worked in retail and food service (not tipped) for a long time and would have been embarrassed to have to resort to begging for tips.

Tip culture worship is real. I’ve run into plenty of people online and offline who think that tips should be mandatory everywhere, of all walks of life.

Waiting tables. Bartending. Hospitality, food delivery, beauty salons, rideshare driving. The service industry, as anyone who has worked in it knows all too well, is notorious for relying on tipping to undercut employee wages and deputize individual customers to determine how much money a worker should be able to take home. Amid increasing recognition of these injustices, a number of campaigns and new laws surfaced, pre-pandemic, to abolish or meaningfully reduce the practice of tipping.

But despite the best efforts of these campaigns, tipping remains the industry - and American society - standard. Indeed, the perverse logic of tipping has broadened into an ever-present ‘snitch economy’ - an ecosystem of tactics like mystery shoppers and Uber and Yelp rating systems designed to police the behavior of workers while outsourcing the costs of said supervision to customers and other workers.

In the process, our snitch economy pits those being surveilled against those doing the watching, and the judging. Through a ubiquitous public-facing network of rating and reviewing other people’s labor - and often the behavioral disposition they exhibit while working - people with otherwise very little power are elevated to temporary positions of authority over others, fostering a culture of surveillance rather than one of solidarity. The snitch economy serves the dual purpose of not only giving working people a false sense of power when they’re the ones being served, but also reducing millions of human interactions to opportunities for not only snap judgments, but subjective rewards and retribution.

    I don’t remember at what company, but I’ve seen this more than once and it’s always hilarious. It’s quite funny watching my SO try and find the hidden mute or close ad button too. I’m glad I’m not from the US myself.

    None of the gas stations around me have rhe “mute” button enabled, but thankfully most of the stations locally don’t blare ads at you while pumping gas. There was one station that tried it years ago and their pumps were constantly vandalized.

    I’m honestly usually surprised that gas stations are often far removed from the highway, and that people used to pump gas for you in many areas.

    The ads at gas stations are so unnecessary and dumb, and the tips are so so strange.

    I should not have to find the combination to get a gas pump to stop advertizing to me. There should be zero ads, or at the least an easy to find and clearly marked “mute” button. It’s easier to break things than it is to find the right buttons.

    Kwik Trip has the same mute button on all of their pumps, but not all stations have it labeled. I imagine it’ll be similar for other chains. But if nothing else press all of the buttons and any fun combination you can think of and see what happens! On many card kiosks pressing the 4 corners will force-reboot the computer in it for example

    I went to an OnCue a few months ago, made myself a fountain drink, and went to the self-checkout to ring myself up. The self-checkout asked me for a tip. I have never been back to that OnCue ever again.

    I should be legally allowed to smash those screens if they play ads while I’m pumping my gas.

    You used to be able to mute them by pressing one of the side buttons but now that just cancels your transaction and stops the pump.

    I don’t need advertisements shoved in my face every second of every day.

    I don’t drive much anymore, but when I did I would avoid gas stations with screens (aside from payment screens obviously). If I saw that an unfamiliar gas station had one, I’d get back in my car and get gas elsewhere even if it was a tad more expensive. Forced viewing of advertisements makes me violently angry, and I don’t need the stress of trying to repress that anger

    They’ve been playing ads for at least a decade… though in the early days, some of the gas stations near me played some cringy jimmy kimmel shit instead of ads (somehow, i preferred having my ears violated by the ads)

    Yet one more thing that makes me thankful to have gotten rid of my car completely… not being dependent on gas stations is super liberating.

    Standing there pumping gas is one of the last vestiges of just stopping and being there.

    Last time I discovered a machine’s ads couldn’t be muted, I stopped the pumps and I’ll never go back to that gas station.

    The level of disrespect is mind boggling.

    It’s annoying but I wouldn’t call it dystopian.
    At least where I live, it’s an equal mix of “wear your seatbelt”, “don’t text and drive”, and weed dispensaries.

    It’s not exactly prime advertising space, so you really just get PSAs and weed.

    Worst part is when you’re getting gas late at night, say after driving back from a family dinner in another city and so you’re tired and full, and you’re all alone at the pumps on an otherwise quiet night.
    Something deep inside the pumps makes them decide to start playing their advertisments from all the pumps at once, but they’re not perfect, so they’re just a little out of sync.
    So it’s dark and you’re tired, relaxed, and almost home. When out of nowhere, from all around you, comes the stereophonic cacophonous cry of “B-B-B-BONGS! B-B-B-BLUNTS! AND MORE, AT THE HOUSE OF DDDDANKKKKK!”

    It’s definitely annoying, but I wouldn’t call it a dystopia.

    This meme isn’t implying that it’s unusual to pump your own gas. It’s implying that tipping culture in the US is progressing to the point of asking you to tip when you didn’t receive a service performed by anyone since you did it yourself.

    Self service is the default for most of the US. New Jersey and (I think) Oregon require full service gas stations though.

    Today I had lunch at a restaraunt, I was given the option to tip so I did, expecting to get service. I got the fast food treatment, they threw a tray on the counter that I had to pickup and when I went to leave they made me bus my own table…

    I’ve got family that used to rely on tips so I’ve always been a generous tipper. The recent tip culture has completely changed me though and now these expected tips just piss me off.

    Personally I’ll tip 10% or less if its an establishment that shouldn’t be asking for a tip, and 20% for an actual tipped profession. More ideally tipping will be phased out because these POS systems are letting it really get out of hand

    In some parts of New York you have to wait and have someone else pump your gas, they call them and attendant. I lived in New York for a while, and it was just terrible, any gas station that required you to wait for someone else to pump your gas I just drove past. Because they would always be slow as hell. Meanwhile it was a clear in and out at all of the self-service stations

    It depends on where you are in New York, I lived in Niskayuna for a while, most of them were self-service, but I had at least one or two telling me to get into a line and wait for someone to pump my gas for me. And I just left immediately, next door had the same number of pumps, but no line because it was an establishment that was fully self-service. Meanwhile the one that wanted me to wait in line only had one guy attending the pumps.

    I imagine the closer you get to Jersey the more common it is

    I’ve been around all of NY, and even right next to Jersey it’s still not common. Maybe within Manhattan or Staten Island as those are the only 2 boroughs where I’ve never gotten gas, but even places right on the border of NJ mostly don’t have it. Agreed tho, hate anywhere that does it and I’ll just leave immediately.

    It was a common thing when I lived there. I told people I had moved to New York and I kept getting spiels about how a North Carolina chick like me could never survive the big city… when given more context they calmed down.

    I lived in Oneonta for a bit before Niskayuna. It had been temporary. I was only there to have my GRS done (am trans) went back home when the procedure was finally done

    I was so glad to make the switch. I had so many people larping Southerners there, talking about how they’re “Just like the dude from Duck Dynasty” and how great my home state was because “Everyone down there is rich becauae liberals don’t make them pay taxes!”

    It was certainly eye opening. I suddenly knew how a Native American feels when John Jackson over at the frathouse puts on a feathered headdress and starts talking about “Hunting buffalo for many moons” in his worst impression of whatever racist old Western he’s seen.

    I think what made me hit the peak of this nonsense was when I was eating at a local diner where the owners were speaking in a (blatantly forced) Southern Accent one morning, and I asked if they served grits.

    They looked at me as if I had just asked for them to kill and serve me their pet dog, even had some guy (one of their regulars, it was a small town) munching a bagel audibly voice his disgust that someone would actually ask for grits.

    Ya know what we call people who eat bagels in North Carolina? Tourists

    And I think anyone who’s seen My Cousin Vinny knows how much we Southern folk like our grits.

    When I moved to Niskayuna the situation improved. Sure it looked less like my home town, but that was for the best… I’d rather have Real New Yorkers introducing me to the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life than Fake Southerners scolding me for wanting grits.

    The city is it’s own beast, but omfg do I hate the South larpers in upstate and elsewhere! They are so annoying, flying confederate flags and shit when half of em have never even been 50 miles from their home town. You’ll even see some of that shit on Long Island. City people are much more open minded in general at least, it’s just the rent and cost of living that you have to survive. The food, including Southern food when you find it, is also world class in NYC - bad restaurants can’t survive.

    Nisky is a cool area, I have some friends there, tho East Nisky has some of that Southern larping as well, it’s nowhere near as bad as it gets in the Southern Tier of NY from my experience as well - the people sharing the border with PA.

    You definitely have my condolences for the southern larpers. I am an actual Southerner and I can tell you that if they came down here, well would be like an actual weeaboo going to feudal Japan… they would get their ass kicked.

    As for the Confederate flag, it’s a difficult and sad story. I actually thought all the flags were heart warming, almost bought a Confederate flag dream catcher for a friend of mine.

    I know you won’t believe me because no Northern or ever believes me. But there was a time when that flag legitimately had more to do with barbecue then a sincerely held belief that a black man was a form of obsolete farm equipment.

    Then people started calling it racist, it always had that stigma, but it wasn’t something you brought up in polite conversation until Dylann Roof happened… then they started the flag bans and now I only see being flown by Trump Supporters trying to silently advertise their klan meetings.

    I miss when the flag was sinply misunderstood, but the second the Tea Party Started waving it on the lawn of the first black president as an intimidation tactic… that’s when I knew we lost it, it was only a matter of time before that stigma became too heavy to bear.

    On Reddit this story would get me downloaded to oblivion, but people tend to understand more on Lemmy and actually hear the other side out.

    That flag used to be so beloved as just a symbol of the south that back when I worked at Walmart and they announced they’d no longer carry the flag, the first person to complain about its loss was a black coworker.

    Honestly I hope one day that it can quietly be put back on the shelves and people think of The Dukes of Hazzard instead of Birth of a Nation… but I know better.

    I feel your pain about the southern larpers, because I’m a real southerner, and look I understand that we lost the Civil War and that it’s good that we lost the Civil War, but still… I can’t help but feel like I’m watching a god damn Minstrel Show anytime Larry The Cable Guy opens his mouth… and I know that the court of public opinion says that I’m wrong for feeling that way.

    Maybe in some Cosmic sort of way this is some strange punishment for the sins of the plantation owners…

    Yeah haha definitely fake, these pumps don't have touch screens so this interface wouldn't work on them. Choices have to be aligned with the 4 buttons on the left and right. Second one from the top on the right side will mute the ads also.

    Yeah same with me. Circle K is the only place around here whose pumps play ads though, so maybe it's just their machines it works on. Someone even scrawled "<- mute" in permanent marker next to the button on all their pumps.

    I scan my own groceries and i’ll keep track of the hours to eventually hit them with a “freelance register operater” bill for €55 an hour.

    As i’m freelance i need to pay 49% taxes on that and another x amount for insuring myself in case i have a work related accident, i’ll be left with roughly €20 an hour which is a little over my actual wage as i’m apparently so skilled they want me to do the job so it must be worth it to them.

    I think everyone everywhere should pull this shit, even if it’s just to make a point. Show them how much they rely on free labour while living in big houses and driving fancy cars lol.
