Otoya Yamaguchi (山口 二矢, Yamaguchi Otoya, 22 February 1943 – 2 November 1960) was a Japanese right-wing ultranationalist youth who assassinated Inejirō Asanuma, chairman of the Japan Socialist Party, on 12 October 1960. Yamaguchi rushed the stage and stabbed Asanuma with a wakizashi-like short sword while Asanuma was participating in a televised election debate at Hibiya Public Hall in Tokyo. Yamaguchi, who was 17 years of age at the time, had been a member of Bin Akao’s far-right Greater Japan Patriotic Party, but had resigned earlier that year, just prior to the assassination.[1] After being arrested and interrogated, Yamaguchi committed suicide while in a detention facility.

Yamaguchi became a hero and a martyr to Japanese far-right groups, who as of 2022,[2] have continued to hold commemorations to this day.[3] Yamaguchi’s actions inspired a number of copycat crimes, including the Shimanaka incident in 1961, and inspired Nobel Prize-winning novelist Kenzaburō Ōe’s novellas Seventeen and Death of a Political Youth.[4][5] A photograph of the Asanuma assassination taken by Japanese photojournalist Yasushi Nagao won World Press Photo of the Year for 1960 and the 1961 Pulitzer Prize.[6][7]

These shitheads and their fucking political violence. If you thought your party could win the hearts and minds of the people, you wouldn’t need to resort to violence, you weak fuck. Same as shitheads defending their all-powerful god from someone slandering them.

niktemadur ,

This damaged student bubbled up from a political environment brew similar to the current one generating incels.

DragonTypeWyvern ,

Not… Really. If you ever want to hate humanity, read up on Imperial Japan’s militarism cult and remember:

Those motherfuckers were still around in 1960 and brainwashing kids, because MacArthur did jack shit in the reconstruction period. They blamed the Rape of Nanking on a fucking lieutenant…

VaultBoyNewVegas ,

Nope. Nope. Nope. Incels are fully to blame for when they act violently. Fuck making excuses for people who think that it’s everyone else’s fault that they can’t get laid and then become bitter and hateful.

phdepressed ,

It’s not an excuse, incels aren’t born incels. Saying they are responsible for their actions and that they are at least in part a product of their environment is not mutually exclusive. Understanding how they are made gives perspective on how to stop more, it doesn’t absolve them of whatever they do.

Lemmeenym , in The Eurobean Mind Cannot Comprehend

My mind can’t comprehend those walking and biking numbers. The walking is about 70 miles a day. That’s more than double the average distance of a one day ultra marathon done everyday for a month and a half. The biking distance is about 255 miles a day. Roughly 2.5x the average daily distance for the Tour de France. I want to meet the people who can do that.

scoobford ,

Google maps doesn’t account for breaks. They’re assuming you can walk at 3mph, and however much time you need to rest and eat is up to you.

Just like 1 day and 23 hours is only drive time. They’re not accounting for the naps that you will definitely need.

Iceblade02 ,

Yep, doing that drive in that time would essentially require at least two people taking shifts driving - or one dangerous madman on some kind of drugs.

Box ,

This is why the Cannonball Run was created

FanBlade ,

I believe it’s assuming you’re not taking breaks, in which case I think they’re a bit more reasonable is expected walking speed but perhaps less reasonable in regards to a persons ability to go without sleeping :)

intensely_human ,

That’s why they follow along with the fast track

intensely_human ,

It takes me 20 minutes to walk one mile at a normal pace. That would mean walking pretty much the whole 24 hours.

TheRealKuni ,

We mostly see trains when they’re around traffic, since that’s where we are. When they’re around traffic they’re slow, to reduce the likelihood of smashing up cars to provide entertainment for the internet.

But when they’re out in the middle of nowhere they haul ass. Relatively speaking. Obviously in the US our trains are nowhere near as fast as modern trains from developed nations.

Some of them haul ass. This one was hauling corn.

Don’t mind me, I’m just the local idiot.

bestagon ,

I could see a system like that being used to racist ends in America. “Please select from the pre-approved list of biblical names”

AlligatorBlizzard , (edited )

I’m having trouble finding articles about it because search engines have become terrible, but I’ve heard trans people talk about how the Swedish law has been used to transphobic ends (and, yes, racist ones too because common names in immigrant communities weren’t on the list). There’s few gender neutral names on the approved list and getting a gendered name approved for a name change is difficult and leaves the door open for outright transphobia - and legally changing your gender required surgical sterilization in Sweden up until the end of 2012.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

this sounds like FUD to me, sweden’s government is generally very progressive when it comes to stuff like this and the system is just there to prevent people naming their kids “allah”.

If anything the way we handle names is great for trans people because getting your legal name changed can be done from the comfort of your computer, largely.

KillingTimeItself ,

perhaps we have a list of “accepted variations of names” where that is what is legally recognized. Though the body will have to regulate it properly of course.

Sounds pretty dumb, not gonna lie.

Harm doesn’t come from names, harms comes from people.

Last thing I need is government regulation for naming my child. (It is very strictly regulated where I’m from. So a classroom of 30 kids has 6 “Johns”)

Every name was unique at some point.
