taaz , (edited ) to selfhosted in NPM - What services need what toggled?

I don’t use nginx proxy manager but websocket has to be enabled for apps that use websockets (duh) - you would have to dive into docs or example infra configs to check if the service uses it.
Rule of thumb here would be to enable it for everything. Optionally you could check if the service works with/without it.

E: Websockets are used when a website needs to talk in “real-time” with the servers - live views and graphs will usually use it also notifications, generally if the website does not reload/redraw fully but data seems to change then there is a high chance it uses websockets under the hood (but there are ways to do it without ws, ex. SSE).

Example: Grafana uses websockets but qbittorrent web ui uses other means (SSE) and does not require ws.

No, this graphic really is solid advice for people to know, but damn if it could have been designed with a little more forethought. Imagine, for instance, if the reader is yellow/blue colorblind. They could make a guess at what's happening, but they may not quite be sure. Arrows are doing 99% of the lifting, here.

The only two that have been good to me and still going strong is Plex and PocketCasts with their lifetime memberships. That was a good deal. But too many to name that turned out to absolutely not lifetime. GPS systems definitely the worst culprits.

aulin ,

I was so close to buying PocketCasts’ lifetime license, and then they switched to subscription-only. Still salty about it, because it’s the best podcatcher by far!

DLSantini ,

Wait, do we actually get something for our old lifetime Pocketcasts licenses? Because I remember when they switched the app to being free, with any extra features being locked behind a subscription, existing licenses holders got… not anything, as far as I remember. I’ve been using the app daily for years now, and have no reason to give it up, but I don’t feel like having bought the license back in the day is getting me anything extra over what a new free-tier user is getting now. Am I missing something?

lud ,

…pocketcasts.com/…/lifetime-access-to-pocket-cast…

Apparently lifetime only applies to the web app or something.

I have never heard of that app so I don’t know much.

andrew ,

Plex has been good to me but I grow ever more concerned that they will drop lifetime Plex pass features as they become more focused on being a provider of media and not just a streaming middleman.

psud ,

Huh. Years ago I tried pocket casts, podcast addict, and podcast republic. I chose republic since it fitted my usage better. They have not gone subscription. I bought the app once years ago and that’s been it. I’m not sure if the free version is ad supported.

I would have been very disappointed had I bought pocket casts and then found I was locked out of some features later. I have dropped other apps that did that, after leaving them bad reviews

Refrigerating them increases their shelf life significantly in these conditions

neutron ,

Sometimes boring is better, sticking to the fundamentals. I didn’t like when signal tried to mix crypto into it.

preasket ,

Wdym “boring”, what do you want a messenger app to do? It does what it’s there for and it does it well.

clot27 ,
@clot27@lemm.ee avatar

Sure, but we have to consider what other people wants too, and if they are getting alot of feature in a single app without any big compromise, they would prefer that and thats perfectly logical.

preasket ,

From my experience of getting other people on Signal, the main issue is that not everyone is already on it. People generally want to use only one app and it attracts them to the most popular one because they don’t need to switch as much.

Secondary issues are:

  • No automatic phone transfer (no cloud backups, has to be done manually)
  • No large public channels

I might add another one, but it applies to WhatsApp too - it’s crazy that there’s still no easy way to move between iOS and Android…

clot27 , (edited )

OTOH telegram gives you option to export your whatsapp chats there making migration a bit more convenient. For the last point, yeah it sucks a lot and fuck whoever is responsible for that…
