this is honestly the only good thing about discord, the krisp noise reduction is actually kind of good. It only took them like 3 years to implement it on the linux client. And we’ve only had system wide noise filtering since the dawn of time.

Although since we’re on the topic, discord manages input/output in the single most inconceivably stupid manner possible.

Worse, I dropped a crap review and complained that function has dropped horribly since the update and the devs INSTANTLY replied like “Have you tried pretending you’re a beta tester for us? Do you mind doing a buncha troubleshooting you definitely haven’t already done?” (They wanted me to reinstall the app… Smh)

Anyway - fuck discord. I’m planning to shift to Revolt, but if anyone has better suggestions I’d be happy to try some!

KillingTimeItself ,

im genuinely surprised discord even tries testing things on the two test branches they have. Yes, you heard me correctly, they have TWO separate testing branches. Bugs literally should not exist on the stable branch.

also when it comes to voip, i’ve enjoyed mumble, it’s pretty solid, minimal, configurable (highly integrated into games already, it’s old af though so maybe not new games) and works pretty well. Revolt seems alright, but it’s plagued with bugs, and weird issues, plus it’s self hosting is just, jank.

We could use a self hosted discord replacement tbh.

I can’t seem to find info on it other than a few screenshots on the play store. Do you choose the home screen apps or are they auto-selected?

CaptDust , (edited )

I just installed KISS to check it out, this is really nice too! I think niagara has a couple more bells and whistles, but it also could be I’m unfamiliar.

  • sliding across app for quick select actions is missing, haven’t figured out how to access these yet (ie to jump directly into composing an email or text)(See edit 2)
  • inline notifications is a big difference standing out for me, I still need to use the notification bar?
  • KISS seems very focused on their search bar which is feeling like a bit more typing. I can tap the circle for an app list but it’s on the far side of the phone? (See edit 1)
  • Niagara tries to be smart enough to bring apps you’ll want to the front homepage, when youll need it. ie connecting to Bluetooth headphones pushes my Spotify to the top. I know KISS doesn’t know my habits, but it seems simpler based on history of launches.
  • niagara relies on more gestures and swipes
  • KISS adding contacts to the home screen is a neat approach, people centric design is good

Overall It’s small details though functionallly they seem very close to me. KISS still great and I love it’s FOSS. They’re doing a solid job of a simple, get stuff done launcher. I don’t want to sound like I’m shilling, but Niagara has a free version you could evaluate for yourself

Edit: hmm after digging through the settings I see KISS supports a gesture for opening the app list - however none of the gestures are functional on my s23. Strange…

Edit2: Ah ha! Quick actions are available from the search, and add themselves to the history. I don’t love having visible duplicates but it’s workable.

Dave ,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

Thanks for the run down! I saw there’s a free version but didn’t seem too different, so it’s good to get the opinions of a user!

Rather than having to search everything you can have your commonly used apps show in a list on the home screen. Personally I turn this off and have a clean home screen, but pin favorites above the search bar. Tapping the search bar shows the most commonly used apps.

Also I think gestures are not from search results but from the home screen. I use gestures on my blank home screen. I have it set up so a swipe down opens the notification tray, a swipe right opens the camera, swipe left opens search, swipe up opens browser. But this is customizable. Not sure if it works if you have the common apps list showing on the home screen.

I don’t think KISS has smarts like Niagara seems to. Just showing commonly used apps is about as smart as it gets. To my knowledge no notifications on the home screen either, though you can add widgets so maybe that’s solvable in some way.

Anyway, seems they are similar but Niagara is a bit superior with KISS being a bit inferior but FOSS, both good options!

That’s what I used to think as well actually. I opened it, saw the airplane control center, and closed it. But then I volunteered for editing a photo for my school, and I had to learn how to effectively create borders around the text, as I would have to makes a lot of changes to them. So I searched and came across this video. And then I understood that GIMP is actually a really powerful tool, you just have to learn how the developers intended you to work with it. Admittedly, having to use the drop shadow feature for text borders is pretty retarded, but it lets you fine tune the how the end result will look.

https://slrpnk.net/pictrs/image/682623c3-4b55-4b0f-a224-c22c5bd0706f.webp

fmstrat ,

Yea, people don’t like it simply because they’re not used to it.

For instance, Cntrl-A, select all. Cntrl-Shift-A is a way more intuitive way to deselect all.

It’s the same reason people complain about OnlyOffice, which is stellar.

TrickDacy ,

I love open office. Partially true though with gimp. I just loathe how it does layers and I hate how the tools and shortcut keys are. Some of the most common design patterns are completely ignored. Unintuitive design is unintuitive design, even if you get used to it.

Kusimulkku ,

OnlyOffice is different from OpenOffice. And OpenOffice nowadays is poorly mainted, it has been forked a while back to LibreOffice

TrickDacy ,

fmstrat ,

I switched, never looked back. It’s so much better for me.

snugglesthefalse ,

I’ve become used to an alt modifier being typically negative and shift positive so ctrl+alt+a would be more like the unselect all and shift would add to a selection (though I guess you can’t add more to the selection after “all”)

TrickDacy ,

I’ll give the video a watch but yeah I’ve used it countless times at this point. Doing extremely basic things like adding text to a document is painful for me due to the extremely weird way layers and selection works. Not to mention basic stuff like zoom shortcut keys standard everywhere else do not work.

brbposting ,

We’re not using that word are we!

I feel the same about Krita. I used it for about a year of hobbyist drawing, and I just never could get comfortable using it.

Clip Studio Paint came out with 3.0, and after some deliberation I decided to pay for the update. Felt like coming home. I’ve done more art in two weeks than I’ve done in nearly a year of using Krita.

ColeSloth ,

Iphone has always been pitched as intuitive and “it just works”, and it seems like it is that way for iphone users.

But when I try using one I’m lost as hell. It seems God awful. In other words, intuitive is whatever you’re used to.

TrickDacy ,

It’s not just what you are used to, but yes that can play a role. I think apple gets a pass because of the image they have. My mom has an iphone and struggles with anything new or changed on it. But people told her it’s the easiest phone so she’ll never switch…

ColeSloth ,

I say it’s “easy” because you have so little say in what you can do with it.

TigrisMorte ,

People who claim GIMP isn't up to Photoshop inevitably reveal the only actual issue is that they learned photoshop first.
