MystikIncarnate , to aboringdystopia in Really, ….. it's my fault they built a terrible system?

No no. The system they built was great. The thing is, the system was changed by them, just in time to rob all the younger generations blind, then stood back and watched it happen, did nothing, and then they have the balls to blame us when we can’t independently thrive in the system they stood by and allowed to be built.

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

It's cute, in a frustrating kind of way, that you think the system was either created that recently, or was ever meant to be anything but exploitative and oppressive and isn't working exactly as designed.

MystikIncarnate ,

Oh, I know the roots of the system date pretty far back.

Fact is that boomers made good headway, they started unions, health and safety, human resources… Stuff that was basically unheard of before that…

While health and safety still exists, most jobs no longer require significant health and safety protection. HR still very much exists, and also does very little for workers day to day.

Unions have all but been disbanded; if you work an office job, it’s very unlikely that you have a union at all, and it’s unlikely that any whispers of a union are happening.

As a result, most workers are getting shafted in salary and benefits, and on top of that companies are raising prices to inflate their profits even more than simply screwing their workers out of their salary, and you end up with trillions running companies, making hundreds of millions or billions of dollars a year…

This has been going on so long that the problem is completely out of hand.

smosjoske ,

Fact is that boomers made good headway, they started unions, health and safety, human resources… Stuff that was basically unheard of before that…

That was all started by the generation before the boomers. The boomers have only gotten only the benefits of those systems. And then started and supported the dismantling of those systems.

Skyline969 , to mildlyinfuriating in higher wages for the servers... by the customers. Fnbs
@Skyline969@lemmy.world avatar

Any auto-grat on a bill is an instant big fat 0 on the tip line for me. Fuck double dipping on customers subsidizing shitty wages. It shouldn’t even need to happen once. If the restaurant can’t pay a reasonable wage it shouldn’t be in business.

I would be completely okay with a restaurant charging a bit more for meals if they also had a “do not tip” policy. Wait staff should be expected to do their jobs, the restaurant should be expected to pay their employees. As a customer I should be expected to pay the restaurant, full stop.

RedAggroBest ,

This isn’t an auto grat tho? This is them saying “You pay more so our employees get better pay, you pay exactly this much more for this effect”. Instead of them just cranking up prices like normal.

Y’all are bitching and moaning about a restaurant being honest instead of just fucking charging more.

TheSaneWriter ,
@TheSaneWriter@lemmy.thesanewriter.com avatar

This isn’t an auto-grat. The receipt explicitly says “This is not a tip or gratuity” and has a recommended tip line. This restaurant is either double-dipping to pay their employees less or scamming their customers.

magikfish ,

If it’s not an auto-grat why not just raise the prices on the menu 18 percent instead of surprising customers at checkout. Setting prices to cover your business and staff is an important part of running any business. The way they’re doing it is intentianally deceptive. Even down to saying that this is so that they can pay staff instead of just advertising the actual prices in the menu.

Waldowal ,
@Waldowal@lemmy.world avatar

This isn’t an auto-grat situation though. This is the restaurant increasing their prices by 18%, then blaming it on the staff.

By not tipping, you’re just punishing the wait staff for the restaurant’s shitty behavior. Better to tip normally, then tell the restaurant you won’t be back until they get their heads out of their asses.

TheActualDevil ,

Well, no. The service charge is there so the restaurant can use it to pay the wait staff if they don’t make enough in tips to equal minimum wage and they have to pay the difference. So if we tip, none of that money goes to the wait staff and goes entirely to the business. If they’re going to add a percentage charge to add to the base pay of their servers, then they should just pay them a living wage and not expect/encourage tipping. This is a business trying to take advantage of tipping culture and make a little bit more on top of their already established profits. I say we call their bluff and make them give that money to the staff.

Waldowal ,
@Waldowal@lemmy.world avatar
FlowVoid ,

It’s a service charge. That implies the money is going to the staff. So they are already getting approximately what they would have been tipped.

Now, maybe “service charge” is a lie and they aren’t actually seeing that money. But if so, then the waitstaff are complicit in that lie, because they handed it to me. And if I’m supposed to assume they are lying then I’m certainly not tipping them.

Waldowal ,
@Waldowal@lemmy.world avatar

It sort of is going to them, but not entirely. The restaurant is called Jon and Vinney’s. I linked to an article somewhere else in this post about them. The restaurant has explained that they do it because the minimum wage in Los Angeles is $16.04. Basically, as a way to be dicks about it, they decided to add the surcharge to the bill to point out very specifically to their customers how much more they have to pay so they can afford to pay their staff $16.04 / hr.

In their minds, they probably feel like they are villifying the government of CA, but, as you’ve noted, most people just confuse it as “auto-gratuity” and then stiff the wait staff out of extra money they would have otherwise gotten.

phillaholic ,

I wouldn’t go back, but your anger is towards management not the worker. I’d still tip in this situation.

Hunter S. Thompson called it so hard it’s unbelievable:

The towers are gone now, reduced to bloody rubble, along with all hopes for Peace in Our Time, in the United States or any other country. Make no mistake about it: We are At War now – with somebody – and we will stay At War with that mysterious Enemy for the rest of our lives.

It will be a Religious War, a sort of Christian Jihad, fueled by religious hatred and led by merciless fanatics on both sides. It will be guerilla warfare on a global scale, with no front lines and no identifiable enemy. Osama bin Laden may be a primitive “figurehead” – or even dead, for all we know – but whoever put those All-American jet planes loaded with All-American fuel into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon did it with chilling precision and accuracy. The second one was a dead-on bullseye. Straight into the middle of the skyscraper.

We are going to punish somebody for this attack, but just who or what will be blown to smithereens for it is hard to say. Maybe Afghanistan, maybe Pakistan or Iraq, or possibly all three at once. Who knows? Not even the Generals in what remains of the Pentagon or the New York papers calling for WAR seem to know who did it or where to look for them.

This is going to be a very expensive war, and Victory is not guaranteed – for anyone, and certainly not for anyone as baffled as George W. Bush. All he knows is that his father started the war a long time ago, and that he, the goofy child-President, has been chosen by Fate and the global Oil industry to finish it Now. He will declare a National Security Emergency and clamp down Hard on Everybody, no matter where they live or why. If the guilty won’t hold up their hands and confess, he and the Generals will ferret them out by force.

That was written less than 24 hours after the attacks, and he pretty much completely nailed the following 20 years of response to them IMO.

sunbytes ,

Well the thing is, she really needs the money.

JohnEdwa ,
@JohnEdwa@kbin.social avatar

She personally doesn't, but it is a rather simple case of supply and demand for everyone else involved - there are only so many that fit in the concert, as long you find enough people willing to pay $900 per ticket to sell them all, it doesn't make any financial sense to price them any lower. And if you do lower it while the market is still willing to pay significantly more, you quickly get swamped by scalpers grabbing the profit from you instead.
There is a Finnish saying that goes something like "He who asks is not the stupid one, the one who agrees to pay is".

sunbytes ,

It’s a common justification, but “if I don’t do [bad thing], then someone else will do [bad thing] instead, but worse” feels like an excuse we’ve heard before.

After all, there’s systems you could put in place to handle scalpers.

But Ticketmaster et al actually have them baked into the business plan, so have no intention of making change.

It’s the same reason there’s no politicians trying to bring rents down. They’re all bloody landlords.

HappycamperNZ ,

Similar, not same.

Both are supply/demand equilibrium, and will always reach the price the market is willing to pay.

With Beyonce, the richest 10k (or so) fans are the ones who will buy the tickets, either through direct payment or scalpers. You could do things like name tickets with photo ID required to present, but the wealthiest who were willing to pay the scalper would still buy anyway. Taylor swift tried lowering her prices for actual fans with a point system, and got hauled over the coals for it.

The housing market is different. If you set a price control on rent you remove any incentive to improve your rental property or invest in new builds as you no longer receive the payoff from the risk - resulting in slum lords and large stocks of the cheapest, shittiest technically houses that you can get. Supply never moves, demand naturally increases over time and property never gets invested in.

triplenadir ,
@triplenadir@lemmygrad.ml avatar

What evidence are you basing your analysis of the effect of price controls on housing based on?

Germany and Austria have price controls on rents, and rental housing is generally much higher quality (and, unsure if cause/effect, much more socially desirable) than say, England. In England, which has no price controls, almost a quarter of rented accommodation is “non-decent” (by the English government’s low standards) – and where 18% of members of Parliament are private landlords (not to mention those whose spouses / parents / business partners are).

HappycamperNZ ,

Sorry, can’t look up peer reviewed sources at the moment… or copy paste for some reason. Its worth noting that the price controls are no more than 20% higher than local properties at the start of tenancy, and no more than 20% increase over 3 years. Still allows for roughly 40% increase Oliver three years and there are discussions on how landlords are taking advantage.

Guardian discussed how companies are discouraged from building in Germany and fuelled demand for existing stock.

Germany population is also in a slow decline (like, -0.xyz%) so new builds aren’t as necessary as other places.

Zorque ,

Ah yes, no scalper is going to want to buy up expensive tickets.

The problem with supply/demand trends for such limited availability is that unless you price astronomically high, theres going to be more than enough people willing to throw their money at it, even if they have to sell a kidney to do it. Its more than just basic market forces, its social trends and hysteria from hype.

At a certain point you have to ask "are they doing it to provide a service, or just making as much money as they can, because that's all they really care about?" Because at a certain level, those two options are no longer compatible.

JohnEdwa ,
@JohnEdwa@kbin.social avatar

They will try, but if the prices are already high then they won't be able to sell them nearly as easily or gain as much profit.
And even if we abolished scalping and it would bring the prices down a bit, it wouldn't actually solve the issue - like how nVidia noticed last gen that there were enough people that were willing to pay ridiculous amounts for the scalped GPUs, so now they increased the prices themselves to that level. It just made it happen faster than normal as they could gauge the markets easier.

sj_zero ,

It sucks but what you wrote is exactly correct.

We saw it with concert tickets before they started raising prices. We saw it with gpus in the last couple years, Nvidia had to raise prices because we were seeing scalpers and we were seeing shortages.

Sucks, but when you have something that there's a limited amount of and an unlimited number of dollars or what have you being printed, this is the final result.

(And I guess if we're being honest, if a lot of people like a certain artist, there's just going to be lots of demand for the thing.)
