Back in the '90s I needed a secure email relay - it had lilo, kernel, init, getty, bash, vi, a few shell utils (before busybox…), syslogd and sendmail. I’m not sure any more as it was a long time ago, but I think I even statically linked everything so there was no libc. I liked that system.

It’s not about storage. It’s about complexity getting back at you, for example not knowing what caused a problem because multiple programs are stepping on each others feet

You realize you don’t have to backup the actual “bloated” programs. Just maybe their configs and any files those programs generate that you’d like to keep, right?

I remember what my idea of making backups was when I was a wee grasshopper.

Making a backup of the whole OS instead of just the configs and user files.

I have come a long way since then.

SpaceCadet ,
@SpaceCadet@feddit.nl avatar

That’s committing the cardinal sin of cherrypicking your backup contents. You may end up forgetting to include things that you didn’t know you needed until restore time and you’re creating a backup that is cumbersome to restore. Always remember: you should really be creating a restore strategy rather than a backup strategy.

As a general rule I always backup the filesystem wholesale, optionally exclude things of which I’m 100% sure that I don’t need it, and keep multiple copies (daylies and monthlies going some time back) so I always have a complete reference of what my system looked like at a particular point in time, and if push comes to shove I can always revert to a previous state by wiping the filesystem and copying one of the backups to it.

mangosloth , to mildlyinfuriating in This is $87 worth of shopping. Please feel free to use the space below to critique my purchases

Take it from someone who knows vegetarian eating, this is a dangerously low amount of protein, and no those cheese slices do not cover it. I’d wager your daily protein macro is a single digit percentage (most sources suggest around 15-35% depending on exercise and lifestyle and all that). If this haul is your entire diet for the week and you’re not leaving out stuff you already have at home or something, I would strongly advise looking for more protein dense foods before protein deficiency starts to affect your well being. I’ve been there and it’s really not good.

LittleBigDonDon ,

Am currently there. Have started drinking Pea Protein shakes (to stay plant-based) quite often. But that would have bumped this shopping trip to $100

mangosloth ,

Best of luck! It really sucks, and the worst part is it’s hard to notice at first, and easily written off as working too much or something until you realize you’re doing it to yourself. I’ve heard good things about pea protein but sadly it’s not really a thing in my country yet so I haven’t had a chance to try it.

Anyway, whey powder can be pretty cheap these days (they have cheese so dairy isn’t a restriction), and there are enough duplicates in this picture that they could cut a couple things and keep the same price point if the budget is tight.

LittleBigDonDon ,

Yeah, the crazy thing is reflecting back, now that I have recent bloodwork showing just how low my protein levels are. I was totally attributing the lethargy to stress from work. I mean, I was stressed (have since changed jobs), and started having panic attacks, but who’s to say that wasn’t exacerbated by an unbalanced diet. I feel soooo much better, and more energized, now that I’m getting the right amount of protein.

Pea protein is great, and the same price here as whey. I actually like the unflavored taste, too. I just mix it with water.

It is kinda an extra expense tho, since it’s not necessarily replacing meals. Still eating lunch & dinner, just adding shakes in between. But absolutely worth it!

Assuming this is representative of everything OP has to eat in the time frame these were purchased for. They might have meats in the freezer, dried/canned beans, etc. that these items will be paired with.

PraiseTheSoup ,

Jiggle_Physics ,

Yeah, missed that, however my point still stands. This could be more just component items for longer term shelf life stuff, and snacks. They still could have beans, lentils, rice, etc at home and these things are just to make specific meals through the week or whatever.

Fryboyter , (edited ) to linux in Linux Crosses 4% Market Share Worldwide

As always, such statistics should be treated with caution.

What methodology is used to calculate Statcounter Global Stats?

Statcounter is a web analytics service. Our tracking code is installed on more than 1.5 million sites globally.

Source: gs.statcounter.com/faq#methodology

It is assumed that there are more than one billion websites worldwide. It is therefore not exactly unlikely that a Linux user will not access any of these 1.5 million websites.

Furthermore, it is quite common for Linux users to use tools such as Pi-Hole that simply block such statistics scripts. This means that these users would not be counted even if they accessed one of these 1.5 million websites. For my part, I also use computers with Linux that I don’t use to access websites. Some of these computers don’t even have access to the Internet. They are therefore not counted either.

Finally, let’s come to the most important point. Percentage values say not much if you don’t know the actual number of users behind them. Let’s assume, for example, that 3.5 per cent Linux users were detected in December and only 3 per cent in January. However, if the total number of users was higher in January, it is therefore possible that more users were detected in January.

eugenia ,
@eugenia@lemmy.ml avatar

Some facts to consider:

  • This happened in New South Wales, in a very rural area. People are not going to commute out to this remote location for minimum wage.
  • Kids volunteer on the weekends and parents sign off on it.
  • Some of the kids like it because they don’t have anything else to do, they learn a job skill, and they make a little money.

That said, I don’t agree with it. Hire adults and do what everyone else does by having a “bring your child to work day/week” if you want to teach kids. Or make a field trip. Let’s not go backwards in society to benefit companies.

givesomefucks ,

Kids volunteer on the weekends and parents sign off on it.

I grew up in a poor rural area, and we had a bunch of child labor due to agriculture exceptions.

Most of it wasn’t kids earning a “life skill” or pocket money. It was poor kids who had to work. And usually their parents worked there too.

And they only need to be 12 for it to be legal.

The families need the kids to work, but the kids working inflates the labor pool and keeps wages low.

If a kids like 16 and wants to pick up a part time job, cool.

But little kids shouldn’t be holding down jobs.

cheese_greater ,

Having partially grown up with this shit, I would say these asshole can absolutely get fucked and do the work themselves.
