Last I checked, there is nothing like !digitalbioacoustics on reddit, I briefly ran an animal communication sub there, but abandoned it when I switched over a few months ago. There’s lots of exciting stuff happening at the intersection of AI and animal communication!

I don’t understand this. I cant even name a single community native to the instance I use. I picked one that hadn’t defederated from anyone, and I block communities as needed. Also subscriptions are a thing.
Do you have any plans to add support for showing when a Lemmy or Kbin instance has defederated from Mastodon, Pleroma, Peertube, Soapbox, Misskey, etc. instances? That seems to be the only flaw when tracking Lemmy deferations.
Adding support for Kbin is definitely a priority. When I built that tool Kbin didn’t have public defederation lists (yet?) though a pull request to implement that was in the works. Idk what’s the status on that is, but as soon as it’s merged I’ll also add Kbin.
For any other software it’s a little trickier. Unless there some way to check for this through ActivityPub of which I’m not aware, I have to go through software specific steps to scan those instances. This means that for Lemmy I go through an API that only exists on Lemmy, when I’ll add Kbin I’ll have to write some new code that will only write for Kbin and so on. This isn’t really sustainable for EVERY fedi platform out there, I won’t do that.
Moreover, as you saw there was a progress bar. That’s your computer querying each one of those 300 instances looking for their defed lists. The more software I add, the more instances you as a user have to query, the longer it takes to run a search. All in all I don’t think I’ll add support for any other software aside from Kbin and possibly Mastodon.
I found a link to a list of who is defederated from whom on a “fediverse for beginners” post. I will see if I can find it again if you need, but it looks like some other commenters already got you covered.

That said, it’s concerning that the Australian courts were able to get recompense for Barilaro, yet Barilaro’s very real corruption and straight up evil that Friendlyjordies was trying to call attention to has gone completely unaddressed.
This sets a dangerous precedent that journalistic pieces could be deemed reputable harm and therefore in any case illegal. Just imagine someone wrote an article about Hitler in his youth calling him out for racist behaviour and they would get a verdict against the journalist, notwithstanding the fact that there’s merit in the criticism.
Of course there is a difference when it comes to unwarranted slander without any evidentiary basis. That’s something more akin to Depp v Heard.

I had never used it until the Reddit event. Then I looked up what RSS was and realized that that’s how I was using Reddit, so might as well just do it that way. It’s so much better.
Here is my problem with that list: it is almost entirely general news feeds. If you subscribe the the first 20 you are going to see the same story 20 times. I’m looking for niche information that is curated. Slashdot, Science Based Medicine, Nature, Factcheck, Neurologica, that kind of stuff where it’s not the same stories covered by everyone else.
I hate Elon musk but Tesla is the best thing that happened to this planet because no other car manufacturer was bothered to do the groundwork required to get electric cars going. They lie and spread corruption before Elon came along.
While I’m not naive enough to think there will be any meaningful reduction in personal car usage in my remaining lifetime (~20-30 years), I’d like us to START making infrastructure investments that will at least point us in the right direction. But no, it’s endless stroads and sprawl and retail development and single family housing as far as the eye can see.
Many people spend their whole lives in cities like New York never owning a car.
Its not absurd to expect Americans to never own cars it’s absurd to expect it to happen before you built cities that enable car free lifestyles. People like to frame it as chicken and egg but it’s not, density and lifestyle always follow transportation infrastructure.
We are not to the point of climate change where we can expect rapid, radical changes to the way the majority of Americans live. And when we hit that point, it won’t be made by complaining to the people driving cars, it will be made by politicians abolishing zoning laws, setting stronger restrictions on rent within cities, and heavy investment into public transportation.
Blaming the huge number of people who can’t afford to live in a city and must drive an hour each way for work just makes you an asshole.
I’m not meaning to be disrespectible here, but if you think zoning laws, rent restrictions, or public transportation will have any noticeable impact on climate change, you’re kidding yourself.
A) society is not planned by a god that sees the most optimal path and picks it, it works like evolution tweaking and building and slightly shifting what came before it. Do you have a viable plan for convincing 7 billion people to give up their cars without literal revolution in the streets? No? Then guess, what, cars might be part of the future.
B) from a basic ablist standpoint how are you going to get a frail 90 year old woman from the train station or her house without using a car? On a special bike with extra suspension and an enclosed carriage and a motor to haul all of that? Oh look you’ve designed a Pontiac Aztec!
Should we all use trains? Yes. Should we all support the government buildout of more trains? Very yes. But it is flat out dogmatic to the point of absurdity to suggest that the future of transportation will not involve electric cars? Absolutely.
Bingo. They are better than burning fuel, full stop. Further EV shipping is also a net good. Biking and walking is the best, but if you are like me you live 10+ miles from work with no public transport to fill the gaps. It was either that or getting fucked over with rent.

Not having a passport for sure is an American thing, but I believe we carry and are required to use our IDs more frequently than other countries , which usually comes in the form of a state-issued drivers license/state ID card.
We drive more often and that requires having it on you at all times. Also every store is pretty strictly required to check it when buying alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana. And having to be 21 to buy those things kind of presents more of a need to check it since it’s harder to judge based on looks.
Tbh in the Europe Union and some extra countries like Switzerland you can move with your national Id between countries so again not that uncommon to not have a passport either.
I think the distinction you make is important. Until fairly recently, not carrying ID was a British thing. Even if you still had it. It used to be an anti-totalitarian point of pride to not be required to present ID on demand. In Germany, carrying a form of identification is a legal requirement from age 16. Of course, anyone who drives in the UK still has a form of picture ID and increasing ease of travel makes passports more common. When mainland Europe is so close, why not holiday there? Whereas the US is so vast and varied that you needn’t pass border control. But this perceived freedom has been shifting in terms of everyday experience.
I don’t think anyone younger than 30 has ever not been carded at Tesco to do their grocery shopping, unless they’ve never had a drop of alcohol or needed an aspirin. I’ve been carded for buying a barbecue brush at Wilko (RIP). You see signs in shops that say that you can expect to be carded if you’re younger than 25. The point is, what was once seen as the government infringing on your rights in a totalitarian way is now expected from supermarkets. So you carry ID. And it’s not just at the shops. What X is doing isn’t anything Twitter wasn’t already. You couldn’t get an account on the birdsite without providing a telephone nr. In the UK, you get a SIM card contract by providing ID. Yes, people can get around that, but it’s so complicated that I would be surprised if that many have.
Clearly Twitter means enough to people for them to be willing to sign over so much, even when decent alternatives exist. I still think it has a lot to do with content, user numbers and wanting to be on the most popular stream. But it might also be that our perception of privacy is changing, as it has before.
According to white liberals, it’s mostly black people that don’t have ID. It gets brought up every time someone suggests making people present an ID card to vote. Most Americans go their whole lives and never leave the country, so passports aren’t as ubiquitous as they are in other countries.
In the civilized world, this is pretty endemic to your country and is actually a problem there as I understand.
Personally, where I live, I couldn’t even vote or reliably buy alcohol if I didn’t have some form of ID to prove my identity or age (okay, I haven’t been carded in years, but it COULD happen). This is OK because everyone is mandated to have ID anyway (and it’s not in any way difficult to get one), so requiring ID for voting, for an example, doesn’t discriminate against poor people like in the US.
That said, X still wouldn’t get my ID. I haven’t even given it to Google, despite them asking me for it so I could watch music videos with a lil bit of swearing or something (Funny thing being, my YouTube account is about old enough that in a year or 2 it can go buy beer here in the EU)
ID is expensive and many poor folk don’t have them, so the “problem” is politically powerful groups implementing ID laws to prevent poor folk from voting. If I didn’t have to have a license, I’d never carry an ID.
They want two things to happen: ID to be expensive and Voter ID to be mandatory. Nobody wants the poors to vote, especially because statistically people of colour are more likely to be poor.
When people in the US talk about a classist system, it’s more of the structure than the cost. There are state IDs that are inexpensive in most states, but the Motor Vehicles branch (or whatever the state calls their department) that issues the ID are frequently difficult to travel to in lower income areas. Occasionally, the branches are understaffed and information about what can be used as proof of ID isn’t communicated clearly. Combine this with the US’s poor labor laws, and it means that it’s risky for someone to take off work, spend significant time getting to a DMV branch, waiting in line a long time because of understaffing, then be told they need more proof of ID and to do it all over again.
It’s frustrating for me and I have a driver’s license and a white-collar job so I can drive myself to the DMV easily and not worry about losing my job or losing a half-day’s pay.
It’s still kind of messy also because proof of birth by birth certificate wasn’t required until relatively recently. My grandad was never issued a birth certificate. As far as the government is concerned, he didn’t exist until he joined the army. We all have to take his word on when he was born and his name. He told it to the army and had no legal proof before then. So my state establishes identification without using birth certificates, which takes more paperwork and complications.
sometimes I suspect that the DMVs job is to tell people to fuck off until they give up and stop trying. It’s a pretty effective form of voter suppression. You hit the nail on the head, I dont think I could have explained it better. Everything you said is particularly true in southern states where it disproportionately affects black people, they have the poorest infrastructure, no viable public transport, laws forbidding mail in voting and very limited polling places with that are open for very truncated operating hours.
Additionally, they’re pretty much only open during working hours, and they’re set up to often be an hour+ wait because why staff more than 2 people? It’s a monopoly on a service.
So the ID may only cost $20 but the travel + missed work adds up fast

You’ll also need it to incorporate your global “green score” which is like a type of social credit. Once cash is gone and decentralized crypto is illegal to own, most people will comply so they don’t starve. A 100% identifiable human 100% tracked and controlled. Fail to comply to something and your identity gets switched off. Nothing works for you now. This is not fiction. Just pay attention to the agenda of WEF. And if you think this can’t or won’t happen then please explain how the fuck Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn still exist? Every person who is faced with this request for government issued ID for anything that isn’t government should refuse and leave. Trusting these incompetent and abusive corporations with even more private information is illogical. They can’t keep anything safe now. Giving them more won’t “save you from the hackers”. That is a disingenuous deception to double down on control. They care nothing for your privacy, safety or well being. “We had a data breach and your personal information has been compromised. It includes your name, email, phone number, address and government issued ID with face scan. Oops, sorry”.

In the US, you need an ID if you want an actual job or bank account. Apart from living on the streets or living in the woods, I’m not sure how you could function without one.
you only need it if you’re buying alcohol or driving a car. your work gets your social but isnt entitled to your ID, which you don’t have to have or carry if you do have it. You can’t even get a bank account without a contract cellphone, so people without ID use prepaid credit cards you buy at the store and load with cash.
Walmart used to have a ton of options for working class people that didn’t have banking options. Not sure if it’s still the case. Many US workers were full-time employed and housed and did not have a bank account. Check cashing was through Walmart.
Wallmart won’t cash my checks, they also won’t tell me why they won’t cash my checks. I’ve never had any issues with them, so it’s a mystery. Not that I need that anymore but it’s not a system anyone should have to rely on.
