riodoro1 , to cat in What non-prescription food/treats do you give your cat with kidney issues?

Mine mostly eats wet food with „renal” on it. Five or six types so he doesn’t get bored (but he does anyway). The best thing I found was a „renal drink”. Sort of a soup which is mostly water, and that really boosted his liquid intake and how much he urinates. Since then his blood results really improved.

cheesymoonshadow OP ,
@cheesymoonshadow@lemmings.world avatar

What is this drink? I’m planning to buy a few different things in my next Chewy order.

TheFriar , (edited )

I can actually give you some good guidance on this. If you have a more holistic/crunchy pet store in your area, one of the best diets you can give them is Answers frozen raw, with answers raw goats milk, and their fermented fish stock. If the kidney issues are far along, a mixture of 50% goats milk to 50% raw (beef, preferably), and their daily recommended of the fermented fish stock. That’s literally the highest quality diet you can give them.

For a less high quality (and thus cheaper) option, I would still recommend replacing part of their protein intake with answers raw goats milk, and definitely the fish stock if you can swing it. Even in less therapeutic doses, those are two great sources of probiotics to aid in digestion as well as adding more liquid to their diet, which is job #1. Job #2, though it’s really job #1.5, is the quality of the proteins they’re eating.

Weruva steak frites is the best canned food for kidney issues, because while keeping moisture high and protein quality high, it also has low phosphorous. Which is job #3. If steak frites is still out of your budget, their chicken frickazee is the second best option.

These are all canned or raw foods. I guess job #0.5 is to cease any and all dry food. If your cat is on dry food, stop immediately. No cat should be eating kibble, but definitely not a cat with kidney issues. Dry food will actually contribute to kidney issues, if not just straight up cause them. As well as tooth decay, obesity, dehydration, diabetes, and a host of other issues like coat quality. Cats a desert animals by nature, so they’re used to getting their moisture from their food. They also eat until they get the nutrients they need, and kibble is so much filler that they will overeat, their dehydration will get worse, and their kidneys will suffer. Especially the lower quality foods like science diet and royal canin.

So no matter what, no kibble from here on out. Be wary of any of the restricted diet stuff like science diet’s because it’s not a complete meal, it’s for maintenance for a flare up in these issues. I mean, avoid science diet altogether (and royal canin. Just saw the subtext of the post). Dave’s makes a good replacement for this, and it’s cheaper because it’s not “prescription,” you can just get it on chewy (or better yet, your local independent pet food store).

Your comment is super helpful. Thanks so much. I will definitely look into all of this stuff and see what’s available on Chewy. Murphy is already on wet-only, with only dry as a “treat” after giving his meds when unable to give it at mealtime.

riodoro1 ,

Its a kattovit product called renal drink. He kinda likes it too. I really think mine’s blood improved because he really started to drink more water. Now he’s peeing twice a day in contrast to once before. He is only 9 though.

Best health to you and your kitty.

BoredPanda , to nostupidquestions in My dad fought the Nazi's they lost. The world knows it. What is the deal with their recent resurgence?

There is no “recent resurgence”.

    1. Nazis never went away. Underground Nazi groups, as well as fully fledged Nazi political parties were common throughout post-WWII Europe.
    1. The people fighting the Nazis weren’t ideologically much better than them. The Americans were still racist as fuck. The British and the French were imperialist world dominators. All of these allies were involved in their own genocides. The Soviets believed in sacrificing huge swaths of their own people to accomplish “great leaps forward”.
    1. Nazism and similiar ideologies are fundamentally based on in-group bias, and that is just something psychological. There will always be people who are more open to others and people who are less open to others.
    1. If you look at recent wars, you will see that even the non-Nazi, “moderate”, “liberal”, “centrist” political parties can have blood on their hands and be complicit in atrocities very much reminiscent of the evil the Nazis committed.

I think the bottom line is, you have to unlearn a lot of the just-so narratives that you have been taught about the world.

el_bhm ,

I will do you one better.

Compare USSR since Stalin to Nazi Germany.

BoredPanda ,

I was thinking of Israel actually. I don’t think the comparison between the Nazis and the Soviets is apt. The ideological motivations are quite different. And it’s a typical Nazi talking point to point at the Soviets and try to argue that they were worse.

el_bhm ,

Russia is a fascist state since Stalin.

Allero ,

Authoritarianism and personality cult in both cases.

As for the rest, it differed drastically.

Nazi Germany was a reactionary ultra-nationalist ultra-militarist right-wing state that pursued a neverending war to make “living room” for Germans at the expense of everybody else and death to Jews and Gypsies.

Soviet Union was built on the premise of equality and egalitarian society that was only militant against the bourgeoisie. It was built around internationalism and peace of nations.

Yes, it should be noted that during the war Stalin has ordered to move some national groups that were “strategically likely” to join Nazis away from the frontline, which is, let’s say, not great by modern humanitarian standards. But exterminating them was never his goal, and they were very much alive and returned to their homeland afterwards. Quite a contrast with Nazis actually shooting or poisoning everyone remotely Jewish, leaving them to a painful death.

safesyrup , to asklemmy in Am I terribly, terribly dyslexic or is this bluetooth keyboard doing me wrong?

I have a mechanical keyboard that also has a bluetooth mode. I tried it once and it‘s utter trash, i think my computer case may be blocking signals to my mainboard. That said i also had moments of single keystrokes not registering and sometimes multiple and even loss of signal for a solid 2 seconds. So i think bluetooth could be an issue.

cashmaggot OP ,

Hey, hey - thanks for the response. I am being a terrible night owl and have to take my tired ass to bed (but my gal passed out a little while ago and I am sneaking in my "decompression" me time.). But! Thank you! I was suspecting it might be that. But idk, cause sometimes I get a touch of the dyslexia (but not too bad, but sometimes...my da has it for sure but I've always read a lot and I think that's helped). But anyways, maybe I'll grab another keyboard. I am just blown because it was a logitech and like..I always felt like I could depend on those but it blew the fk up in less than a year. I don't have the reciept or anything, so I can't much on this front. My gal is a tinkerer so maybe I'll toss it to her and she can poke around. But it's weird cause like...it was okay and then I came back and like - didn't do anything to it. It lives on my little baby desk. And it just didn't work anymore. Shrugs.

But I also just switched to Fedora and wasn't sure if I was having any issues with any of the hardware, but I updated everything so I think it's just the connection or something. Thanks again =)

Walking_coffin ,

You could always try on another machine if you can to see if the latency is due to the laptop or the keyboard itself.

Also, changing keyboard, especially if you’ve been using a certain keyboard type and you change to another, can really mess uo the eay you type until you get used to it.

Lastly, bluetooth is a whole mess so it very well could be that. If you value what you bought and like you said, someone close to you is a tinkerer, converting a bluetooth device to a wired can be a nice project if they haven’t done so before (and it prevents throwing out a working device with a small defect).

cashmaggot OP ,

Hey, homie g! Hope your sun-monday is chill af. I usually use it on my phone to write little snippets. It works pretty well there, but idk. But I think maybe your second point might be the stickler. In that I am more used to typing with a certain keyboard and maybe I am just typoing all over the place.

I wanna keep my bluetooth guy, but I am gunna have my gal take a look at my other keyboard. I was just shocked it died so fast because I've been rocking Logitech a majority of my living breathing life and have taken the same mouse around for a hundred years. The keyboard was new, but I figured it wouldn't poop out and I could keep hopping around with that too. Eh!

safesyrup ,

You‘re welcome, don‘t worry :) Before tossing it away i would try a different bluetooth (if you can borrow one from a friend) keyboard and even try your keyboard on a different machine

cashmaggot OP ,

Oh, I def wouldn't toss the bluetooth. But the keyboard I am not sure what to do with it. Makes me really flustered. But I am going to toss it at my gal either way and see what all she wants to/can do with it. Just kinda blows me because I've had Logitech stuff last for a hundred years. Idk if this is some weird pandemic kink or if logitech just kinda blows now?

*I use the bluetooth to write on my phone but I also am outside and like UP on my phone. Idk if it's a combination of distance, home chatter, hardware grumpies or what. But I am def typoing more than I think I typically do. But it could also be my setup, in which I sit pretty far back from my screen because I am using it from the floor. Dunno, but I don't remember having this issue before.

I plan to just throw it up on Codeberg Pages or Neocities or something.
