I use Komoot for bike routes. Its not perfect, but it will give you much safer routes than google. It has a lot more info on elevation and road types too.

towerful , to selfhosted in Vaultwarden has such a steep learning curve

Bitwarden is cheap enough, and I trust them as a company enough that I have no interest in self hosting vaultwarden.

However, all these hoops you have had to jump through are excellent learning experiences that are a benefit to apply to more of your self hosted setup.

Reverse proxies are the backbone of hosting and services these days.
Learning how to inspect docker containers, source code, config files and documentation to find where critical files are stored is extremely useful.
Learning how to set up more useful/granular backups beyond a basic VM snapshot in proxmox can be applied to any install anywhere.

The most annoying thing about a lot of these is that tutorials are “minimal viable setup” sorta things.
Like “now you have it setup, make sure you tune it for production” and it just ends.
And finding other tutorials that talk about the next step, to get things production ready, often reference out dated versions, or have different core setups so doesn’t quite apply.

I understand your frustrations.

Realistically, what could a single person do to prevent either 9/11 or the Covid pandemic from happening? Not much.

Now, the assassination of a certain person who wasn’t in politics the time might do some good…

saigot , (edited )

covid for sure, but one guy with a smuggled knife could have a pretty good chance of stopping at least one of the planes

Riven ,
@Riven@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Just call with a bomb threat, they take that shit seriously and it would have emptied planes and buildings. Call the PD and threaten both towers, the pentagon, and the airport.

Smokeydope ,
@Smokeydope@lemmy.world avatar

It depends on how far back you go and who you contact about he incident and the evidence to solidify the claim. 9/11 could have been stopped relatively easily with a few days notice to national security. The air force could have shot both planes out of the sky. Just call the civilian deaths a tragic casalty of terrorism and use it to help fuel the war. The twin towers could have been shut down that day.

But you’ve gotta materialize right in front of the commander in chief, bring a mountain of carbon datable evidence like news papers and original classified docs, and hope that you don’t get brained on the spot before you make your case.

As for covid, you probably can’t stop it but maybe better warn and prepare world governments so they can get their population ready through subtle conditioning like trying to get wearing mask be a fashon trend or advertising bidets heavily as the new rich yuppie thing to show as a status symbol.

state_electrician ,

Scientists have been talking about a big pandemic for years before Covid. Nobody cared. If I ever get to time travel, I’ll use it for personal gain. That’s the only way something good’ll come out of it.

lugal ,

Bringing evidence from the future is cheating. They wouldn’t believe you if you told them the truth but if you say you are a terrorist and placed a bomb in the world trade center, they might evacuate it

Yeah, but it never went anywhere and by 2001 he wasn’t in politics again.

SaharaMaleikuhm ,

Go to the cops and prove you are from the future. Get there a few days early with the lottery numbers on a piece of paper or smth. That might get them to take you seriously. Of course they will never let you go back.

ashok36 , to asklemmy in I've just been introduced to Taco Bell. What should I be trying?

Cantina chicken burrito with the green sauce in the packet. It’s better than you’d get at most of the fake Mexican chain restaurants in my city. Not as good as the authentic places but the price can’t be beat.

nyan , to technology in What is your favorite web browser? (Windows, MacOS, Linux, etc.)

Pale Moon, originally forked from Firefox many years ago (although the codebases have diverged so far that most Firefox patches no longer apply). Still xul, still supports Firefox extensions from back in the day as well as extensions purpose-written for it. On the downside, it occasionally isn’t compatible with the latest bleeding-edge nonstandard Javascript features—I keep Vivaldi around for the extremely rare occasion when something goes wrong with a site that I absolutely must visit for some reason (I think I’ve needed it twice in the past five years).

EnderMB , to lemmyshitpost in Dave was giving someone the best! The best! The best! Ol' screw

Dave Grohl got a lot of shit for playing a private show for Amazon leadership after they had laid off thousands of employees earlier this year.

Now, I guess it kinda makes sense why. It’s not just that he’s morally bankrupt, but he probably needed some extra cash to fund the incoming divorce and raising a new child.

With all that said, I kinda feel for the child. It’s gonna suck to have this scrutiny on your shoulders, and to have weird parts of the Grohl cult of personality hate you for existing. Would it actually be that good having him as your dad when his other kids apparently want nothing to do with him now?

If you can stretch to a 13 incher (no pun intended), LG gram might be your best bet. Around 965 gram weight, reasonably priced, can run Linux without any problem.

I still believe Framework laptop 13 is the best choice when going with 13 inch.

UnpledgedCatnapTipper ,

Framework is amazing (I have a 7840u 13in) but they’re expensive. 100% worth it to me as an enthusiast and IT professional but possibly not for someone less interested in the tech itself.

melroy ,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Agreed. It's 100% worth to me as well as software engineer. But maybe not for everybody. Then again, it's the best 13 inch laptop out there for running Linux. Especially considering the 2.8k display variant with 2x scaling works great under any distro.

stoly , to nostupidquestions in Why are people on the internet (and Lemmy) so quick to say someone "deserves to die"

This is human nature. It’s the same reason you had 20 year olds sucker punching 70 year old asian women during lockdown. Cowardice and a need to lash out.

surewhynotlem ,

No. It may be the nature of some subset of people. Those people should die.

Professorozone , to nostupidquestions in how do I accept that a doctor earns more than double what I do?

I think you’re on the right track. First, especially with your experience, do the work and become the doctor you want them to be. And buy a Porsche.

Second, how much work did that person do to earn the degree? How much debt did that person incur?

I’ve seen many times where a person with lesser education outperforms a “superior.” It’s not really fair, but getting the degree and then the job…that’s just the way it is.

OurToothbrush , to asklemmy in When was the last presidential candidate before Trump to be endorsed by people as bad as the KKK?

Dick Cheney endorsed Kamala Harris I think

currentaffairs.org/…/an-endorsement-from-dick-che…

Sorta like comparing basement nazis to burning villages nazis though. They’re both vile it is a question of effectiveness.

InternetCitizen2 ,

I suppose there’s a lesson about Dick having a certain level of principles. Not that I’d agree with them, but damn.

slumlordthanatos ,

I feel like there is a difference between voting for someone and voting against someone.

I don’t like how noted war criminal amd possible lizard person Dick Cheney endorsed Harris, but Cheney has never said, “I like what Harris is going to do”; instead, he tried to frame it as a vote against Trump because…well, it’s Trump.

And of course, right-wingers don’t have any capability for self-reflection, because the proper response to fucking Dick Cheney calling you evil is to look in the mirror and ask yourself some hard questions.

N5DEW , to amateur_radio in ISO: Morse Code trainer

Have you looked at the Morserino-32? It does all of the things in your main list at least, as well as quite a bit more.

Another option would be the (tr)uSDX which is a 5 watt transceiver. Has all of the settings you are looking for, and can be set to practice mode without transmitting. Even has a CW decoder built in. This is what I personally am using to practice.

Hope this helps 73 de N5DEW
