beeb , (edited ) to technology in What is your favorite web browser? (Windows, MacOS, Linux, etc.)

Started using Zen browser recently and it’s not bad! Basically Firefox but more stylish and more privacy. It syncs with my Mozilla/Firefox account so on mobile I just use Firefox.

MakeMKV is pretty much the standard for ripping Blu-rays. You can then use handbrake to reencode to something more efficient.

RememberTheApollo_ OP ,

Hmm…gave that a try just now and it said the version was too old (? odd, it was the latest listed) and asked for a registration…

jj122 ,

It’s in perpetual beta and is free as long as you don’t want to run multiple copies at a time. I had so many DVDs to rip I bought a license. It can also rip UHD Blu-rays if you have the correct drive. Not sure why it would say it’s too old, are your date settings in windows correct? The forum is filled with people doing exactly what you describe and is a great resource. forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=20579

RememberTheApollo_ OP ,

I poked around and found the solution to the issue in the MakeMKV forums probably just as you posted this. Thank you.

lemmesay , to linuxmemes in Reject vim return to emacs
@lemmesay@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I use both(or many, actually).

  • emacs for working on languages that I’m learning, and coding challenges websites(e.g.: codewars)
  • vim for one-off config edits, browser navigation
  • neovim(lazyvim) for rust and lua, and at home
  • vscodium(with neovim key bindings) for typescript, and at work
  • android studio(with vim keybindings) for kotlin/compose
  • xcode for swift/ui
  • nano when I feel funny

Awareness is 90% of the battle. Just being aware of where you are, what you’re doing, and who’s around you will keep you safe. In my city, and others like NY, I’m always shocked at tourists who are just so blatently tourists. Stopped on the sidewalk, pointing up at the big buildings, completely unaware of the world outside of them. Not only is it incredibly inconsiderate to the people around you, but it makes you an easy target.

The rest for me is confidence. I used to get nervous when I saw a large group of people that I’d have to walk through/around, but now it’s just a normal thing. Just confidently walk past them, don’t look at them, just keep going, and I’ve never been hassled. Hell I’ve had to literally step over people sitting on the ground before, just don’t look like you’re nervous and it’ll go well. If you go out expecting something to go wrong, it probably will. If you look like you go there a million times, no one will care.

Cities really have gotten safer, it’s pretty safe to just walk down any street now in most cities. Just don’t be an idiot walking around looking like you don’t belong offering an easy score.

  1. Know where you are. Any trouble you get in gets so much worse when you’re lost.
  2. Trust your gut. If you don’t feel right about something it’s better to be safe then sorry.
  3. Bar tenders and gas stations. If you need someone to help you, that’s the best two options.

Frederic , to linux in How do I resolve XFCE's buggy volume plugins?

I’m using Xfce, and the program to control volume is “pavucontrol”, no problem with it…

Plugin in my panel seems to be /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/xfce4/panel/plugins/libpulseaudio-plugin.so

velox_vulnus OP ,

Plugin in my panel seems to be /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/xfce4/panel/plugins/libpulseaudio-plugin.so

Another name for this is the xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin, so that is right, actually - it is the same plugin I’ve mentioned. It prompts the option to use pavucontrol as the mixer.

If you check the General Tab in Properties, you can see the first option in Behaviour - “Enable keyboard shortcuts for volume control”. This isn’t working for me.

I wanted to log XFCE plugins, but I’m not really sure on how it should be done.
