The Good Place.

Be warned, that you should watch this one without much research. If you like the first episode, you’ll love the show.

One of the very few shows where each and every season is consistently great. Super funny and had a satisfying ending, instead of the usual clifferhanger-because-of-cancellation ending

Just watch the first episode or two, and if it doesn’t have you hooked, it’s not your jam anyway.

But it will have you hooked, because it’s the best piece of American television in recent history.

Normally I’d agree with that advice, but it took me the whole first season to get hooked by the show. After about 5 episodes I was ready to call it quits, but my partner who had seen it told me to keep watching, and they were right! Loved every minute of it from then on.

Which really makes you think, shouldn’t longer-penised individuals have an reproductive advantage over short-penised people? Longer penises can scoop deeper in the couchhole to get out other people’s jizz. Why hasn’t the human race evolved such that every male had 20 cm (7.8 in) penises?

Why hasn’t humanity evolved such that every male had 20 cm (7.8 in) penises?

Oh dear, no one tell him he got the short end of the genes…

Joking, of course.

I would assume penises didn’t need to evolve to be that long on average since vaginas are not that deep on average? So there would only be so much depth to reach in the first place. Possibly girth would also affect it - having a long noodle dick might mean no matter how deep you go, the penis might not be wide enough to effectively “scoop” it out.

Again assuming, but after a certain length (bottoming out), width would become more important

thanks_shakey_snake ,

We kind of have. Human penises are waaaay bigger than those of other primate species, and many other mammals (relative to overall body size).

MajorMajormajormajor ,

Poor, poor gorillas, they never stood a chance.

DragonTypeWyvern ,

Gorillas consider large penises a sign of barbarism. When’s the last time you heard of a gorilla killing someone?

A human?

Think about it. /s… Unless?

antifa ,

The longer the penis, the larger the fraction of women who will find sex with that person painful, and at some point the reproductive advantage of scooping out others’ semen will be nullified due to the fact that no woman wants to sleep with you. I think I read that four inches is the length that most women find comfortable, but I don’t remember where I read it.

Kecessa ,

Four? 😐 That’s under average!

breadsmasher ,
@breadsmasher@lemmy.world avatar

Average size != average comfort level

Tja ,

Wouldn’t an evolutionary advantage tend to make it equal?

breadsmasher ,
@breadsmasher@lemmy.world avatar

Well, humans have pretty varied sizes. I am talking very generally, on average

Cethin ,

I’m pretty sure I read 8 as the average preferred length, but I’m sure we’re both biased in what we read so I have no idea really. All I have is personal experience that tell me it’s well above 4, but also everyone I’ve slept with has been generally aware of my size beforehand, so it’s got a large self-selection bias.

Valmond ,

Or make it up with more strokes, so longer intercourse.

Turns out there may be more to this evolution thing than 'first past the post'. Non-reproductive members of a species can help other members of the species to survive.
Essentially it's not about getting "my genes" into the next generation, it's really about getting the genes of "my species" into the next generation, and beyond.

Does this mean that due to undersampling, we can only assume we have found the biggest fossils/skeletons/remains, and cannot know how big they could really get?

    Blue_Morpho ,

I think it’s the opposite. They’re saying that physical limitations on size exist (bone strength, lung capacity) even if you only found one skeleton. So significantly bigger TRexs aren’t possible.

    DaTingGoBrrr ,

Not according to this post lemmy.ml/comment/12594857

Edit: here’s a direct link to the article if the link above is broken for some reason

    news.sky.com/…/tyrannosaurus-rex-could-have-been-…

    Blue_Morpho ,

That’s not a link to the actual paper. The King of the Hill meme above claims that the actual paper says that physical limits apply to maximum size. This implies the article misrepresents the research paper.

    DaTingGoBrrr ,

Ah, I get it now. Thanks!

    scratchee ,

I don’t think that’s what the meme is claiming.

I think instead it’s just claiming that all fossils have the same implied increase in maximum size implied by the paper, not just T rex.

I’m guessing the illiterate paleo fans were excited that maybe T rex was king of the dinosaurs again, but the logic fails if all the dinosaurs get bigger max sizes…

    Blue_Morpho ,

If that were the case then the first sentence wouldn’t claim that there are physical limits.

    I dug up the paper.

“Biomechanical and ecological limitations notwithstanding, we estimate that the absolute largest T. rex may have been 70% more massive than the currently largest known specimen (~15,000 vs. ~8800 kg).”

    onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ece3.11658

That is the paper says, if we ignore biomechanical limits, statistically there could be a T-Rex that’s 70% bigger than what we have already found.

    scratchee ,

That does make sense, though I read it as:

[the new, expanded] upper body size limits…

Is how I read it, but your interpretation works well too, so I don’t really know now.

Enoril , to nostupidquestions in How come it shows that I have 7 messages? Then when I click on it it shows nothing?
    @Enoril@jlai.lu avatar

Make sure to click on “show all” button (or equivalent button of your app) once in the messages tab. Once visible, mark them as read so they won’t remain as “active” unread message.

I had this behavior with my app that was considering the messages read (so hidding them by default when going to the messages tab) once i opened it while not marking it read on lemmy side (hence the 7 unread messages displayed)
