Why doesn’t America join the first world and provide Universal Health Care?

Trump’s existence doesn’t make Obama’s health care plan suck any less.

Also: “Your guy sucks as badly as our guy” isn’t the awesome rebuttal you think it is.

(Plus I’m not a Trump supporter.)

No one knows, but for sure the reason is something rotten. I’ve never ever heard a reasonable argument against it.

    abbadon420 ,

Not the entire “first world” has universal health care. The Netherlands for example has only 62% UFC. Which is fairly managable in paractice, with proper regulations and support for thos ewho can’t pay the €120 obligatory monthly insurance fee, but obviously it’s complete bullshit.

Climate change is fucking a lot up.

Hotter air is less dense, requiring more lift generate from the engines.

    Tlaloc_Temporal ,

To be clear, 2°C is not going to significantly affect lift. Planes won’t to falling put of the sky on sunny days. Rather, airports and weight limits were designed around historic temperature maximums, and much higher maximum temperatures are showing up much more commonly. Adjusting these limits isn’t hard, but airlines are going to cry every step of the way and pass the cost ditectly to passengers.

Increased turbulence and higher winds are also a concern, increasing maintenance costs and travel times, as well as extreme weather shutting down airports more often.

    Midnitte ,

pass the cost ditectly to passengers.

    That’s the rub, no?

Even better to get the meat out of the picture.

Get rid of crew compartment in tank, stick cameras all over tank, replace crew with teenager with VR goggles 100 mi. away. Bill it as World of Tanks II and you probably don’t even have to pay them.

On Pope side of things, put Pope in the Vatican, and stick a hologram projector in the Popemobile. Bonus: can have multiple Popemobiles and can tune projected Pope for local audiences, like more-Asian Pope when he visits Japan, etc.

card797 , to nostupidquestions in What are some things you can do to maintain your teeth when you don't have health insurance and can't afford dental care?

I have dental care, but the thing we should all be doing is flossing once a day. Brush twice a day. Brushing should take 2-3 minutes. Do a circular motion with your brush and get all of the surfaces clean. Use your tongue to feel for plaque and spot brush to remove that. I hope you can see a dentist sometime in the future.

dejected_warp_core , to nostupidquestions in What are some things you can do to maintain your teeth when you don't have health insurance and can't afford dental care?

    Cut out soft-drinks in general.

They are not only packed full of sugar, but some very popular ones contain phosphoric acid. If you had to invent an combination of edible ingredients designed to damage tooth enamel, you couldn’t do worse. The fact that this is a diet-friendly option is almost a side-benefit. It’s that bad.

Are there bots on lemmy? I didn’t like the idea of those repost bots on reddit.

    FlihpFlorp ,

    Some clients will highlight bots

If you go to lemmy.world on a browser you can hide accounts that have flagged themselves as bots

I have bot accounts hidden because during the Reddit Exodus there was so many bots posting content form reddit to ideally drive engagement and discussion but no one commented so they just felt spammy to me

Hopefully this makes sense I had to stop mid sentence to do something and I’m too tired to proof read

    meekah ,
    @meekah@lemmy.world avatar

Repost bots existed to farm karma to sell the accounts for advertising purposes. The bots that mark themselves as such wouldn’t repost (other than the reddit-to-lemmy bots you mentioned, but that’s not really reposting anyways)

TheSpookiestUser , to showerthoughts in There should be a semicolon punctuation for exclamation and question marks.
    @TheSpookiestUser@lemmy.world avatar

I often see this accomplished with dashed interjections - dashes! can you believe that? - as a way to break up a sentence while still continuing with a single train of thought. But I always support the invention of new punctuation, how long has it been since we got any? We’re well overdue.

Is the interrobang not enough for you‽

    tiefling ,

I always enjoy a good interrobang before bed

We’re both talking about the same thing right?

    dharmacurious ,

¡I love the interrobang! But I feel like we need more than just that. ⸘Would it not be fantastic to know the tone of a sentence from the beginning‽

Also, I believe what OP is looking for is something like this image. Sadly, I can’t find a keyboard with them, or a copy/pastable line where they’ve been typed. 1000010473

Would also be useful mixed with the interrobang. The backwards question mark “⸮” is also often used for rhetorical questions. But it’s sometimes replaced with ❓because it’s easier to type on a phone. ❗Is sometimes used for sarcastic enthusiasm, too, instead of the “official” sarcmark with is apparently copywrited and difficult to parse because it’s all swirly and weird, whereas the big red ❗ or ❓ is way more obviously out of place and meant to be noticed, like sarcasm or a rhetorical question.

    418teapot ,

I can’t find a keyboard with them, or a copy/pastable line where they’ve been typed

    Maybe use combining diacritical marks?

I’m using 0x326 (Combining Comma Below), but you may need the CGJ in there to render correctly in all contexts

    e.g.

    Foo!̦ Bar?̦

Edit: Combining grapheme joiner, not zero width joiner

    dharmacurious ,

I’m not techy enough to know if that’s something I can do on my android or not. Lol. I never use the laptop for anything other than school.

    418teapot ,

Ah yeah I don’t know how I would do that easily on a phone. Do those in my example above render for you? You should probably be able to just copy/paste them on a phone if they do.

    Etterra ,

This is English good sir or madam as the case may be. If you want pre-sentence punctuation you’ll have to switch to Spanish or similar. Thank you.

    ZarkleFarkle ,

These are fictional examples I think, but it’s still a generally powerful concept you can make data structures by putting geometry inside of.

Etterra , to asklemmy in What is the Orb?

The orb is a spherical object made of solid matter, possibly silicate or metal, that has been highly polished and subsequently enchanted using any of a variety of scrying and detection spells, such as clairvoyance and true seeing.

    ZarkleFarkle ,

The spells can be represented by internal geometries that can encode data structures using maths.
