s_s , to asklemmy in Why does it seem the world is all of a sudden concerned about sexual orientation? Especially America. Did I miss how far we came as a society to see it take a 40 year step backwards?

Why are people so interested in defining themselves along sexual identity and orientation in relatively recent western culture?

Why now? Why is it so different from most of human existence?

Because we are no longer facing famine. The Green Revolution has made our relationship with food so secure we no longer define ourselves in relation to it.

Throughout most of history people are farmers or ranchers or shepherds or bakers or butchers or millers.

So, we climb the Biological hierarchy of needs looking for our next characteristic that needs fulfillment.

TubularTittyFrog , (edited )

not even. 1950s we had this idealized version that everyone was heterosexual, owned a home and had strict gender roles.

That shit is now all blown apart. And for most folks the complexities of it all are beyond understanding.

And it cuts both ways. I don’t care about other people’s genders and identities, but boy they care about mine. Gotten plenty of sexist slurs from queer/trans people based on my gender and lots of shitty assumptions. I’m bi, but I ‘present’ as a heterosexual dudebro, and it makes non-gender conforming people angry at me for some reason, also many insecure straight men and women. Only people who don’t seem to care are people who are bi, or secure in their sexuality. Way too many people feel the need to do that though.

I’d just like to say that I’m not defining myself at any point, I’m describing myself.

A trivial point, maybe, but there’s still plenty of bigots around and the ones around me use phrases like “defining yourself” to minimize and erase lbgtq+ people’s experiences.

s_s ,

Identifying might be the best word to use, given the psychology literature all tends to use that, but thank you for your critique.

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Also heavily under fire, though the arguments are usually paper thin. They dismiss self-identification under the pretense that it’s not about identity, that your identity can’t be that you’re trans or whatever. Just a fiat argument.

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

And I’d just like to add: you’re right, this is the way the literature talks about it. You’d think the term being used clinically - with a clear, concise, and well-defined meaning - would mean it couldn’t be targeted and attacked the way it is by the religious right. You’d think, you’d hope, and you’d be wrong. And that sucks.

I finally gave up on the free streams and got IPTV. Got it streaming though Plex/jellyfin and I’m really impressed. You can stream the IPTV through stremio too for a easier setup.

Zorro12 ,

How did you manage to stream IPTV in Plex? All the articles I found were referencing to some plugins which are not supported by Plex anymore. Thanks for any hint.

Unmapped ,

Well Plex has the live TV stuff you just need a tuner. So there are programs that act as tuners for IPTV. Like a middle man between IPTV and Plex. I’m still switching around trying to find one that works best. They all seem to have pros and cons. There is Xteve and Telly. Xteve is easier to setup but hasn’t been updated in a long time. There is a newer fork of xteve called Threadfin but it has a bug which keeps me from being able to add a m3u link. But I found a fork of the fork where the bug is fixed.

paraphrand , to showerthoughts in There is no history on the History channel. There's nothing true on TruTV. There's no music on music television. There's no science on the science channel.

All of those channels were idealistic and naive. The reality of capitalism destroyed them.

EatATaco ,

Capitalism just takes advantage of human nature. That’s why it has clearly been the most successful system, at least as a starting point, for the overall well being of a nation.

The issue with these channels is that most people just don’t give a fuck about the information. They want to be entertained. Capitalism is just good system that enabled that to be figured out.

Your issue is not with capitalism, but human nature.

shalafi ,

That’s a bingo!

paraphrand ,

So it’s a most or nothing situation? They need to be maximally broadly appealing? That sounds like capitalism to me.

I don’t care if only a certain percentage of people are into these channels. That should be just fine. It is just fine. And I’m not here to guilt anyone because they don’t like watching history shows or whatever else.

The economic model failed the audience of the original versions of these channels. It’s not society as a whole that failed the producers of the channels.

EatATaco ,

They need to be maximally broadly appealing? That sounds like capitalism to me.

“broadly appealing” means “human nature.” This is my point. Capitalism is just a good system to figure this out. You want stuff that appeals to you, as do I. But that stuff is boring to most other people. Most people like this drivel, unfortunately. You just want a system that caters to you, and your niche interests (ones we likely share, BTW). You just want the stuff you want on what is available to the broad public. . . .But why is that fair to the majority?

And you know what? With things like youtube, podcasts, and streaming (all thanks to capitalism, BTW), all of that is available to you. Just not on inappropriately named cable stations. Why do you care? Do you even get cable? Who does anymore? Even my pre-boomer dad has cut the cord.

Don’t get me wrong. Capitalism certainly has it’s faults. There are certain things, like policing, fire protection, and health care, that simply don’t fit into the mold of capitalism well. Even as a well off American, I’m all for strong socialism for many things, like what we see in Europe.

I just find the concept that “these aren’t the original intent of the channels. . .what a failure of capitalism!” to be kind of funny. Who really cares?

Heavybell , to linux in Gentoo vs any other distro
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

The point of use flags is to make it so if you don’t want to print, every package that would otherwise pull in CUPS as a dependency can be compiled without it. Stuff like that.

Gentoo also has a good system for handling multiple concurrent installs of different versions of some packages, e.g python.

If there’s software you want to install from source that uses automake it’s pretty simple to build your own package for it.

Very much a system for doing things your way, and a good way to learn linux IMO. To that end, no there is no installer, but the process is not that complex. Boot a live USB, partition and format a drive, download and extract a base system, install a kernel (there is a fits-most-needs one available now), install a bootloader. Reboot into your new system and continue installing what you need from there.

corsicanguppy , to nostupidquestions in Why are doctors so hands off and unhelpful in the USA?

why you have to be completely sedated and pay thousands upon thousands of dollars for expensive anesthesia

I’ve got this one, my dude. It’s because American healthcare is mercenary and broken. When I had, um, a similar ‘retroscopic’ test from the other end, I was under a general, needed a buddy at the end, out for a few hours, etc; seems to be about the same.

Cost: $0

Premiums/subscription: $0

Material costs: $0 also

Like, I pay my income tax and the healthcare is just what’s there – we run it on income tax only, and before covid it was apparently funded adequately. Yeah, we’re short on doctors right now as many of them left the field because of aggressive ‘mah raghts’ hillbillies whipped into a frenzy by the conservatives, but they run the triage and they keep their appointments. It’s so different from when I lived in 07974.

some_guy , to asklemmy in How do I stop a 'planned future' from blindly determining my life's path?

Get into therapy, if possible. I’ve learned so much from therapy (and quality therapists (I’m old)), including building a healthier sense of self that was underdeveloped due to home life stuff when I was a kid. At 38, I was finally able to love myself, something I had thought impossible. A 21yo version of me wouldn’t have been able to envision the me of today because it would seem impossible.

Maybe you only do therapy to help adjust to this one thing that you’re asking about and then you’re good. It sounds like you may not have the amount of baggage that I had. But I think it’s an incredibly valuable and useful tool. The catch is having the right therapist. Be prepared to say that it isn’t a good fit if you don’t trust the person. I find that for each good therapist (three over ~30 years), I’ve had to meet with at least one, once two, who were a bad fit.

Good luck!
