I wish stalin drove tanks straight into west berlin, then france, then the UK, then atlantis, then NYC, then chicago, then seattle, then anchorage, then Tokyo, then Seoul, then Beijing, then KFC/tacobell.

the Game of Thrones show’s last 2 seasons (the ones not based on any published books) was so bad, it make people retroactively hate the entire series and the entire intellectual property lol

Can I refuse MS Authenticator?

So my company decided to migrate office suite and email etc to Microsoft365. Whatever. But for 2FA login they decided to disable the option to choose “any authenticator” and force Microsoft Authenticator on the (private) phones of both employees and volunteers. Is there any valid reason why they would do this, like it’s...

Tabitha ,

I know Google has a way to “force” you to only use their app, and that’s strictly enforced for personal MFAs (I haven’t verified that recently), I didn’t have that kind of trouble not using the MS one, but I’m not sure my org was as strict as yours on that “force MS” option.

I needed to search something in the AWS log thing the other day, couldn’t figure out how to search text with one common non azAZ09-_ character, also couldn’t figure out how to negate on simple words, have to do the grep thing and it JustWorked™

My startup doesn’t have a dress code, so what I wear is about the half-way point between business casual/thrift shop and homeless/grunge. Boots or wedges, dyed hair, septum, occasionally a graphic tee. I like colorful shit. The least complicated/unflattering/whorish dress I can find, whatever least likely to snitch on me for weight gain.

It’s simple to label a government as “authoritarian” just because they have things called “laws” that prevent you from exploiting their people. Likewise, it’s convenient to repeatedly tell your citizens that distant, non-English-speaking countries are “authoritarian.” The truth is, for every Westerner who can afford to travel and verify these claims, a million others will just accept what the media tells them. They’ll even go on to reinforce these narratives, despite having no firsthand experience or direct connection to these places.

there’s a really old picture of me holding a knife menacing menacingly menacing still up there on the internet

Farm Folks CEO On Boob Physics: ‘We Don’t Want To Attract Nasty People’

wonder-who-thats-for

Torrenting exposes your public IP. In a country where government doesn't care, does that pose a risk?

I honestly don’t believe I will have any legal trouble because I don’t do anything like cp or worse, I just pirate media I like, not even porn. But across users of communities, or on public trackers, is IP exposure something to be concerned about?

Tabitha ,

they could still be recording your IP, with intent to build a case against you, even if that requires one day in the future that your government randomly decides to bend the knee to the US. I still think that’s a long shot though.

Would you teach your kids how to pirate?

My gf and I have had discussions about teaching morals to kids. In that vein, I asked myself, would I teach piracy to my kids? Yes, it’s technically illegal and carries inherent risks. But so does teenage sex carry the risks of teenage pregnancy, and so we have an obligation to children to teach them how to practice safe sex....

and I cannot fathom a road trip where we don’t make a pit-stop at least every four hours

yall must be roadtrip spartans if you can go 4 hours without a pitstop

I don’t think anything particularly interesting will happen except an admin will notice and the slam the unfederate button.

When / why / how did "I hope you are well" become a standard email intro?

Practically every email I’ve received in maybe the past year has started with “I hope you are well”. I even had an LLM draft a placeholder email for me and it started with the same thing. This has not always been the case and it’s strange to me that everyone I interact with begins their emails with this line. Frankly,...

I had a friend beg me for my family’s recycling so he can get “points”.

Tabitha ,

no way, full backs feel like you’re wearing a diaper and you still get wedgies anyways, so why not have a tinier more environmentally friendly wedgy and no panty lines?

if you’re actually having the specific problem mentioned in the title, just size up. try plain ones instead of weird fancy ones.

64bit

that’s the main reason almost all volvo games don’t run on non-32bit MacOS[1][2].

[1] every mac since 2011 is 64bit only

[2] despite there being reports of the source engine compiling to 64bit just fine and copying assets of specific games seemed to work

whatever linux + rust + unified architecture chips is going to be in 10 years

Tabitha ,

Does the app let you change the playback speed to something rational like 0.9x, 1.1x, 1.2x, 1.3x? I’ve almost never found a video where 1.25x was the optimal listening speed. YT’s default playback speeds are shit for accessibility.

Tabitha ,

imagine being a year deep into the NFT eternal winter and thinking a consumer hardware product is a great business idea.

You can currently get almost any handheld emulator device from $20-$200, or just buy a controller that’s designed to hold your phone.

There are no good NFT games, and nobody wants to pay $500 to own an AI generated knock-off pokemon just to get started.

Tabitha ,

I think you could make a credible argument that some of the Harry Potter books are worse than the movies. The best example that comes to mind is making fun of Hermione for wanting to free slaves, and the other characters claiming being slaves is in their nature or something. If you had only watched the movies instead, you’d get to see the slaves are miserable, most of the good team characters don’t own slaves, and Harry Potter tricks a slave owner into freeing their slave.

Tabitha ,

What if more people pirate?

People like buying things and then owning the thing they bought. Steam does a really good job giving the illusion of ownership to the buyer while still giving the money to the seller. But, as they say, Piracy is a service problem. Signing up for a Netflix was no-brainer back in the day, but the price went up and now there are over $100/month of options to consider or rotate between. Piracy cuts through all the bullshit and gives users almost all content worth watching on their schedule.

Piracy will grow as anti-user practices grow. Prices are going up regularly anyways, but the services will claim (almost always a greed driven lie) they need to raise them because of piracy. We’re entering the dark ages of microtransactions, low effort DLCs, greedflation. The user bends the knee to the corporation, the corporation flogs the user, the user rates the app 5 stars for the pleasure. The corporation will raise their prices again, because they can. The user that remain may cover the lost revenue of the users that remain. MBA driven greedflation, decorated with happy emoji marketing emails, will define this era.

  1. “Click to Start” - clicking does nothing
  2. wouldn’t this be easy for a bot to solve?

Also I don’t want to follow randos who sometimes post about cool things, sometimes post the $50 hamburger they ate, and sometimes post unfiltered rampant misogyny, I want to follow cool ideas and topics directly.

because everyone else is there.

There are at least 10 bigger social networks, so we’re probably good for at least another year.

Tabitha ,

Seems kind of useless, unless you can restore older versions of apps (e.g. dev sells out or goes rogue).
