Fleppensteijn , to nostupidquestions in Do any ATMs in Belgium support balance inquiries?
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

As far as I know, European banks never give you the option for balance inquiry. ATMs in e.g. Asia may give the option but it won’t work with a European bank card.

ciferecaNinjo OP ,

Dutch ATMs give a balance.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

Not with my ING account

ciferecaNinjo OP ,

oh, that’s interesting. I wonder if card-issuing banks are blocking balance inquiries even if ATMs offer it. I don’t think I saw Ing ATMs in Netherlands, only the conglomerate they are partnered with (geldmaat). The Geldmaat ATMs print “credit limit” on the receipt.

allywilson , to nostupidquestions in Do any ATMs in Belgium support balance inquiries?

That’s unexpected.

I’ve never thought about it before. In the UK getting your balance is on every ATM. The ATMs are all different makes and models, interfaces, OSes, different banks, etc. the only thing I can think of that is the same is they are all connected to LINK - maybe they have set standards for what they should all have/have not?

Anti-feature: you must enter your PIN before it shows you the menu. Does that mean it connects to my bank even in the absense of a transaction?

This is the same in the UK. They request your PIN immediately after putting in your card (althogh I think if you use a credit card it will prompt for your language first), but it doesn’t use it until it needs to connect to your bank (I know this after knowingly mistakenly putting in my PIN, then attempting to get my balance or something and then the card is ejected and the message about incorrect PIN appears).

Blackmist ,

I think in the UK each bank enquiry results in the ATM operator getting paid. So they ask you like three times if you want to see your balance because they get money for that as well as just the cash dispensing.

Tb0n3 , to nostupidquestions in [US] Looking for some ideas for freelance work / "side hustle"

Passive income is also called being rich.

subignition OP ,
@subignition@fedia.io avatar

Maybe that was the wrong choice of words. What would you suggest? I guess I can edit that to "side hustle" instead if that's more appropriate...?

Tb0n3 ,

Honestly the best side hustle is to better yourself and ultimately find a better primary hustle. Side hustles don’t do much more than steal your already limited leisure time.

subignition OP ,
@subignition@fedia.io avatar

Well, you're entirely right, but unfortunately that doesn't help me much in the moment. I appreciate your response regardless. <3

PM_Your_Nudes_Please ,

Yup. Collecting rent is passive income. But you actually need to be rich enough to own the property before you can collect rent.

Interest is passive income. But you need to have enough money to actually make the interest payments worth more than a few cents.

Investment returns are passive income. But you need to have enough invested, in a broad enough portfolio, to reliably pay dividends or return growth. To the point that a market dip in one sector won’t kill your investments.

And all of these already require a lot of money.

metaStatic ,

Find an exchange traded real estate investment trust and throw every spare dollar you have at it, now you're collecting rent without owning property. Typically paid quarterly unlike dividends which are usually every 6 months.

Currency is toilet paper, turn it into assets as fast as you can.

Time in the market > Timing the market

hahattpro ,

yeah cool. Thank for remind me being rich can also create a stream of income without do anything.

jetsetdorito , to selfhosted in Need a new Cable Modem

My unpopular opinion… Comcast’s XB7 and XB8 boxes are fine hardware wise. If you’re paying for unlimited data its literally cheaper to rent their modem with unlimited.

Hello_there ,

If you're paying a monthly fee to rent, you'll make your money back in a year by just purchasing a modem jnstead

jetsetdorito , (edited )

Comcast charges $30 for unlimited data, and $25 for unlimited data + modem rental

Hmmm, what advantage are they having by you using their modem. does it give mor information to them?

Nice to see a good example of telemetry use

aaaaace , to fediverse in Why use MBin instead of Lemmy?

Apropos of nothing, I’d like to see a mod done to the fediverse… Each user keeps their own info pod, and fedi sites can use that to populate profiles.

Migration is the largest hurdle in the fedi for users, instances change/shut down/federate with Meta without warning, etc.

Would be great to have one’s info on one’s own drives, go to other mastodon site that didn’t e.g. manipulate its users into being on Meta and just plug in.

Images could also be stored this way, so copyright and provenance is straightforward. When user moves, so does all that.

Then a lemmy, (x)bin, piefed instance becomes just a place to park and not a captive zoo.

I think that the fediverse should offer a compelling improvement over commercial SM,: For me self-custody and easy migration are the things.

I have old friends from Livejournal and that’s how we stay in touch. I use a lot of the fediverse platforms, Lemmy, Catodon, Pixelfed, and I also use Bluesky and Maven.
