I feel like I’m having a change of heart on NextCloud… Every time some little thing breaks I have to figure out how to fix it

jetsetdorito ,

It largely is, but yesterday the Recognize app broke and I have no idea how to fix it. I think the environment got messed up from an apt-get upgrade? Its little things like that I have to figure out how to fix

I’ve tried a few times I just can’t get myself to like the UI

10 years ago, Google launched the 2nd-gen Nexus 7, and no tablet has captured its magic since (www.androidpolice.com)

Ten years ago today, Google released the 2nd-generation Nexus 7, just days after a surprise announcement. Back then, Android tablets still felt fresh and exciting. It seemed like anything was possible, and things could only improve from there. Well, we know what happened next. But the depressing state of the tablet market to...

I still miss how nice this was when it came out. Rocking a Galaxy Tab S5e with Lineage OS which I’m really enjoying now though.

Privacy with Google's Gboard (lemm.ee)

The only app I can’t live without. Except for gboard, all of my applications are Foss. There is no competition for gboard’s swipe typing, not to mention its many capabilities like as searching for gifs, stickers, being able to paste copied images, translating, and so on. I’d like to know how I can use gboard while...

Tried it for a few minutes, it just feels off. It could just be the haptics? Idk this makes sense it just really makes me aware I’m typing on a screen

1000 down / 20 up for $75 from Comcast. It’s getting upgraded to 1200/200… Eventually… 🥲

If they take too long I might just hop back to TMobile 5g home internet. It would peak at like 500 down / 120 up for $50 which I was super happy with.

In the US we have Zelle which is free and instant, but it’s still a third party your bank integrates

jetsetdorito ,

I feel like that should have the opposite implication 🫠

jetsetdorito ,

Do people in the UK even use those

jetsetdorito ,

Whenever I see articles about iMessage/RCS/SMS I see all the comments about how it’s a really American thing and how people in other countries use WhatsApp/others

Jellyfin, Shinobi, and more recently NextCloud. Looking into Home Assistant and Paperless.

Shinobi’s on a Pi4 and the Jellyfin/NC are on a mini PC.

jetsetdorito ,

No, I’m using it’s FTP based triggers. Since most cameras can upload snapshots to FTP servers when there’s motion, Shinobi has a feature to trigger motion with FTP.

What got you into selfhosting and what was the first thing that you hosted?

For me, it was PhotoPrism. I used to be an idiot, and used Google Photos as my gallery. I knew that it was terrible for privacy but was too lazy to do anything about it. When Google limited storage for free accounts, I started looking for alternatives. Tried out a lot of stuff, but ended up settling on PhotoPrism....

Plex on my Pi 3

This is more or less how I started learning Linux too

The pain point is if someone sends you a link to a post on a different instance you kind of have to jump through a hoop to interact with it

My unpopular opinion… Comcast’s XB7 and XB8 boxes are fine hardware wise. If you’re paying for unlimited data its literally cheaper to rent their modem with unlimited.

jetsetdorito , (edited )

Comcast charges $30 for unlimited data, and $25 for unlimited data + modem rental

Comcast advertising “10G” in hopes to confuse consumers to accept slower speeds (www.pcworld.com)

Comcast advertising “10G” in hopes to confuse consumers to accept slower speeds::Comcast says Xfinity offers 10G home internet, but the term “10G” is hazy and potentially misleading—especially because it has no relation to 5G for cell phones.

Most people don’t even understand mbps. People get the most expensive plans when it won’t even make a difference for what they do, they just believe it will work better.

YSK: Use RSS feeds to curate your online experience

Over reliance on algorithms has degraded the user experience to the point that the average user is drowning in ragebait and extremist politics, because they drive up engagement. Just like a toddler, algorithms don’t discriminate between good and bad attention, so everything that gets clicks is thrust forward. Now, you could...

I’m really liking the app Read You on Android, but there are many others. Pretty much any news site or blog or something you can add it by URL. Sometimes you need to add /rss to the end of it.

jetsetdorito ,

I don’t actually know that this works, but using wallet from a Wear OS/Fitbit device might still work when you’re rooted.

I haven’t been rooted in like a year, but last time I tried the safety net fixes broke setting up a Wear OS device.

After using one for like 8 years I really don’t know how people have the time/energy to make up and remember all their own passwords

AFAIK apple doesn’t support transcribing reactions from text

20 Android 'hidden gems,' i.e. excellent, mostly free, mostly lesser-known games. (lemm.ee)

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.com.boopsgames.asterius - Terrific, sprawling, puzzle-ish roguelike, easy to play but with lots of secrets to discover, and a long learning curve to win. (note: I’ve written a guide with hints, which I’d only recommend using as a last resort)...

jetsetdorito ,

I’ve probably spent at least 100 hours playing Solomon’s Boneyard / Solomon’s Keep.

You pick a wizard and in Boneyard you fight waves of enemies and in Keep it’s more like a dungeon crawler.

It's missing features and performance really starts chugging after a few minutes of scrolling, but updates are in the pipeline
