On the contrary, deplatforming works very well. In the wake of Reddit banning FatPeopleHate and CoonTown the Georgia Institute of Technology did a study on walling off and removing "safe spaces" for bigots:

Working from over 100M Reddit posts and comments, we generate hate speech lexicons to examine variations in hate speech usage via causal inference methods. We find that the ban worked for Reddit.

More accounts than expected discontinued using the site; those that stayed drastically decreased their hate speech usage—by at least 80%. Though many subreddits saw an influx of r/fatpeoplehate and r/CoonTown “migrants,” those subreddits saw no significant changes in hate speech usage.

In other words, other subreddits did not inherit the problem.

Banning an entire bigoted instance from yours, i.e. defederating, will accomplish the goal of reducing and removing bigoted behavior from your instance.

Well, once they fix the whole "each instance copies the media from other instances automatically" thing. I'd love to self-host a vanity instance if I didn't have to either worry about CSAM or just nuke the entire pict-rs facility via script.

...actually I wonder if that's an option on kbin. Even if the Mastodon interoperability is a bit wonky right now I like the platform working with both services on ActivityPub (thus why I'm here).

Why is it every instance admin's responsibility to fix bigots? What is it about running a Lemmy instance that obligates people to actively work to find the one glimmer of redeeming quality in these human septic tanks? Why should the targets of their hatred have to do all the work to avoid being victimized?

Well it isn't, nothing does, and they shouldn't. Bigots are the ones in the wrong here, and kicking them out works plenty well. Bigots spread by being given platforms. Take away even one of those and it lessens the spread.

"We shouldn't have echo chambers" is just propaganda from bigots who were upset that their soapboxes got taken away. Stop falling for it.

Making it mandatory and something you can't opt out of is not acceptable. "Work as a knockoff as a CDN" shouldn't be a requirement of running a vanity instance. That's a barrier to entry without much benefit.

I can't speak for everyone else, but I know I was taken aback by the prospect that selfhosting meant I'd be caching copies of media uploaded to other instances without any way to opt out of that. It's one thing to provide links, it's another thing to be functioning as a knockoff CDN. That's a bit more than I'm willing to do for the sake of a vanity instance.

Dunno about other browsers, but if you can get Firefox to view .onion links as a separate Application or File Type you should be able to give it a separate associated action, then just select Tor browser as the handler.

Problem is I'm not sure where Firefox stores the File Types list (it's not in about:config) and you can't just add to it via the UI either.

Selfhosting lemmy with no pictrs (sh.itjust.works)

Hi all. Due to the news of the illegal images being hosted on lemmy, I shut down my instance. I read some comments from people stating that they were able to selfhost lemmy without pictrs, they just can’t upload or cache photos. I think this is what I am interested in doing at this time....

    What I've personally seen is that the moment they're mentioned they descend en masse on a thread. Most comments are fairly innocuous but there's always a few that are overly aggressive, and if nothing else the sheer volume can be overwhelming.

    You can kind of get that on Kbin, though it shunts all the Mastodon stuff over to the "Microblogging" section. Also it's not exactly bug free right now: a lot of the time you won't see all of the replies to a post, especially if they're replies to replies (and so on and so forth).

    The idea is there though, and the devs are working on it constantly, so one day it should work correctly.

    My spouse bought a Kindle Paperwhite that was gathering dust on a shelf, so I loaded it up and gave it a whirl. I absolutely love the thing: it's light, clear, easy to read, and easy to load things onto (especially via Calibre). The only thing I dislike about it is that the idle battery usage seems completely random at times. Sometimes I can leave it alone for two days and it'll be at half power, sometimes I go away for a few hours and it'll drop from 80% to 8%. Usually it's fine, but I've learned to keep a power source handy.
