Thrift stores are getting in on the piracy game I guess. Can't say I'm disappointed.

Look, I might have better copies now, but if someone wants to spend $3 and get the first 150+ episodes of Bleach and Naruto burned to KDVD I'd say they're gonna walk away happy with the deal they got.

This, right here. Live Closed Captions are often a fair bit behind the actual video, because when it comes to accessibility it's more important to get the text right than to get the timing right.

If nothing else, it pretty well cuts off any claims they might make about not being aware they were not in compliance. It speeds cases along once they do get to court, plus there's the prospect of fines, so on.

Yeah, we'd need to know the gpu or even vague specs on the laptop to give a good answer.

Even assuming that OP is talking about Intel Integrated Graphics that's still a huge range depending on which series it is.

yukichigai ,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

I said this elsewhere, but without knowing what specific integrated graphics card you're using (e.g. Intel HD 4000 series) it's hard to give specific recommendations. Generally though there's a range of things that will work:

  • Any game released 7+-ish years before the laptop was manufactured.
  • Most 2D games released 4+-ish years before the laptop was manufactured.
  • Anything that has an Android/iOS version.
  • Emulated games for anything from 2 console generations ago or more (e.g. OG Xbox, Playstation 2). Also the PC releases of those games (e.g. Knights of the Old Republic)

Yep, specifically a post-scarcity society that is absent the concept of money.

LTSC also doesn't get incremental updates other than absolutely critical vulnerability fixes. It's specifically meant for machines that need everything to function exactly the same over a long period of time, e.g. point of sale machines, the accounting/inventory machine that hangs out in the back office, so on. You aren't going to get any major update or overhaul pushed to an LTSC version of Windows.

LTSC can also be a pain in the tuchus to get your hands on as an individual. If you have an MSDN account however (like through work or school) they often come with a bunch of keys for Microsoft products, including LTSC products. You can check here, just try logging in with your work/school email - even if it's non-Microsoft - and see what happens.

If you can't get your hands on an LTSC copy, then at a minimum try getting a copy of Windows 10/11 "N", which comes without Windows Media Player and Skype pre-installed. It's nowhere near as clean as LTSC, but every little bit helps.

Really early on, too. It was one of the things that made me go "oh wait this isn't just fart jokes in space".

Though to be fair, the reality is that no matter how advanced we get there's still gonna be fart jokes in space. That scene in the cafeteria where everyone's getting Bortus to eat random things seems like a far more realistic vision of a space-faring post-scarcity future.

Mayor Jacob Frey quips that choosing remote work over office makes you a 'loser' (Minneapolis, MN, USA) (bringmethenews.com)

“I don’t know if you saw this study the other day, but what this study clearly shows, is when people have the ability to come downtown to an office and don’t, when they stay home, sitting on their couch with their nasty cat blanket diddling on their laptop … if they do that for a few months, you become a loser! For the actual Windows image you can legitmately download ISOs for most every version of Windows from Microsoft directly, you just need your browser's user agent to say you're using a non-Windows OS. Since you say you're looking to "test Windows" it sounds like you're on another OS, so you should be able to just download an ISO normally.

On the subject of Sorbo, apparently he had two small strokes during his time on Hercules and that's part of why he went off the rails so damn abruptly.

In other words they're following a playbook written by the brain-damaged, literally. By all means, go on.

The guild is seeking contracts that include staffer protections in the event of the sale of the company, improved severance offerings, and basic protections from AI.

In other words they've noticed that a bunch of greedy venture capitalists bought them and aren't gonna let 'em just liquidate/automate their jobs for a quick buck.

They're also probably feeling a bit paranoid after watching Hard-Drive have the same thing happen.

They'd have to do a hell of an enshittification to completely ruin Plex, if only because there are old versions floating around that will let you run a server without ever logging in to Plex itself. Though at that point it'd probably be easier to switch to Jellyfin.

IT WILL BE YEARS OF TRAUMA TRYING TO DETERMINE GOOD FROM BAD

Because it worked so well when we decided to skip over all that "good from bad" determination after the Civil War.

yukichigai ,

YMMV wildly. Walmart of all places generally has a good ratio of self checkout to actual cashiers, but there's this annoying trend with a lot of the local stores where they have only 4 self checkouts period but will only ever have one, maybe two other checkout lanes operating. Doesn't matter if there's a line stretching the full length of one of the grocery aisles, 2 non-self checkout lanes and that's it.

No no, we mean it, at least at that price. I'd be willing to kick YouTube a few bucks a month. I'm not going to pay them more per month than most MMOs. They're trying to charge streaming service prices for content they don't produce.

Finally. As a Nevadan I cannot being to describe how utterly infuriating it was when our AG suggested it wasn't a crime, specifically "we ascertained that current state statutes did not directly address the conduct in question". It's a massive massive massive relief that he either changed his mind or was playing it close to his vest the entire time.

Also pardon my American but I hope these chucklefucks get nailed to the wall.

As others have said, adblockers do still work on YouTube. Specifically, uBlock Origin works great on YouTube, as long as you don't use it with any other adblockers.

Also if you're using Chrome, stop using Chrome. uBlock Origin still works on Chrome most of the time but Google is doing their best to kill it off. Switch to Firefox.

A large portion of the population is incapable of understanding any conflict where there isn't a clearly defined "good" and "bad" side. In their eyes whichever side did The Worst Thing is Bad, and thus the other side is automatically Good and anything they do is justified.

These people vote by the way, just in case you thought you might be able to sleep tonight.

I've been saying it for years: the Jews deserve so much better than the government of Israel. They've been through enough shit, they deserve to not be under the rule of a corrupt far-right government hellbent on committing as many human rights violations as possible. JUST ONCE AT LEAST. C'mon universe, work with us here.

It's to cover the stink of Kai Winn. Even venting the room into the cold vacuum of space can't sweep out every stray "my child" that gets stuck to surfaces.

I've had great luck with pine- and corn-based cat litters for low/no scent and low/no dust. Only problem is that they usually don't clump, though they do make ones which do. Oh, and they're all much lighter than the normal stuff. I'd say give one of those a try.

I think the analysis is correct in that the implementation will die in committee before ever making it to effect, not to mention the practical considerations of implementing this in the lighting-fast timeframe of 3 years. However, I cannot help but point out this part:

So far, not a kill switch, but some kind of technology to detect if you’re driving like a drunk person and disable the vehicle.

"Disable the vehicle" is literally what people mean when they talk about a "kill switch". At best that's an argument over semantics. The law mandates a thing that deliberately stop your car from functioning. That's a kill switch.

They're more like AndroidTV boxes with a full menu and HDMI-CEC support, only they came out back in the day when Chromecasts were just for casting. They were also dirt cheap; unfortunately that's because they were made with bargain-basement parts which often failed or started to overheat easily a few months in.

You would think, but the number of people I've met who surf the web without any adblockers at all and just seem fine with it is alarming. I think Google is counting on a lot of people just not knowing any better.

Won't stop me from informing them otherwise though.

yukichigai ,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Funnily enough I think the percentage use of adblockers is going to go up a fair bit thanks to what Google is doing. My amazingly sweet "just go along with anything" MIL actually complained to me about YouTube ads the other day, then ads on websites in general. She jumped at my offer to install a different YouTube client and a good adblocker once I explained that it was a possibility for her tablet.

If they wanted to pull this off they needed to do it quietly, not draw attention to the fact that adblockers exist and are apparently so effective they need to do something very public about them.

@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Diablo III. First time I played it was at the urging of my friend, who told me unironically, "don't worry about the plot, the plot doesn't matter." Unsurprisingly my experience wasn't particularly engaging and I lost interest, not seeing much reason to play it over any number of other games that didn't have an always-online requirement.

Flash forward several years later. My then-girlfriend (now spouse) asked me if I'd ever played a Diablo game, and I related my experience. After she was done sputtering and emitting various noises of extreme outrage she insisted that I set things up so we could play through Diablo 1, 2, and then 3 together. I went in to D1 expecting to be similarly disappointed and instead found an incredibly dark, atmospheric, and compelling story. Oh and we did get The Butcher so I also shat myself. After that I was way hyped for 2, and by the time we hit 3 I was far more interested in playing. Loved the hell out of it, found myself not only enjoying the game but completing through the last stages of a season journey to score extra stash space and all that. Not out of obligation either, I was legitimately enjoying the grind.

yukichigai ,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Played the Beta, thought it was... good. Better than 3 in some ways, but not up to that oppressive, almost claustrophobic ambiance in D1 that made it so damn good. That said, I loved rolling around as a Shaman Werewolf tanking everything. Was it the most effective? Nope, but I tanked Butcher twice and the World Boss and survived. Felt great.

Haven't played the game proper on release though. Got drawn into other things actually. Am looking forward to it.

if it’s not a thing now could it become a thing a decade from now?

Nope. "MAPS" is in the same vein as "attack helicopter" and "bathroom rapists": it's just another attempt by bigots to invent some "evidence" that the LGBTQ+ community is actually deluded/dangerous/evil/etc.
