Normally I'd agree, but cigarettes in particular are a product that is designed to be as addictive as possible with a laundry list of negative health impacts and virtually zero positive ones. Combine that with the fact that you aren't just putting it in your body but the body of anyone within breathing distance of you, there's a strong case to be made for banning them outright.

Put it another way, if cigarettes are legal then marijuana, LSD, MDMA, and a whole host of other drugs should be legal too.

Kbin is an absolutely fantastic platform that has held up remarkably well given that it was not ready for the sudden influx of new users.

Plus side: a lot of bugs are being identified and quickly.

Minus side: Poor ernest can only do so much about them in a given time frame.

I still want to make this my primary Fediverse account simply because I like the idea of being able to use one account for both Lemmy and Mastodon content, but I have a backup on SDF that I need to use sometimes because things just don't work right here.

Also not being able to see bots is a massive downside. Rather, not being able to see the formally declared bots; the dodgy bots masquerading as actual users slip through just fine.

That workaround doesn't actually work, not legally. The Colorado law specifies that the pay range has to be reasonable and they will review and cite businesses that try to pull that if a complaint is made. The NYC-specific law also worked the same. I imagine the NY State law will have a similar provision.

Doesn't mean they still won't try it mind you.

I had a similar "it's great I don't get what people are talking about" experience, only I was running it on lesser hardware than yours: 4GB GTX 970, 12-core i7-5820k, 32GB ram. I ran into a handful of bugs that were funny but not really disruptive (e.g. some dude's corpse floating behind a car as I was on the highway) and otherwise had a blast.

Nonetheless, it didn't really feel finished, y'know? That part wore on me, and I think is what undermined my enjoyment the most. It really was released too early.

Kbin already has it. I've yet to feel the need to make use of it, but it works pretty well by all accounts.

Atheists, is there anything religious that sticks with you to this day?

I am Ganesh, an Indian atheist and I don’t eat beef. It’s not like that I have a religious reason to do that, but after all those years seeing cows as peaceful animals and playing and growing up with them in a village, I doubt if I ever will be able to eat beef. I wasn’t raised very religious, I didn’t go to temple...

yukichigai ,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

I still act respectful in churches and other "sacred" places, not out of any fear of the Magic Sky Wizard, but simply because other people respect them and it seems like a useful thing to encourage, even if I don't agree with the underlying reasoning. Having a place which most of society agrees should be a quiet, comforting sanctuary is not the worst thing at all, even if the comfort is derived from extreme wishful thinking.

Also, Christmas. Christmas music is great. A Charlie Brown Christmas is one of the best holiday albums ever, though we always skip "Hark the Herald Angel Sings" 'cause it's such a tonal shift compared to the rest of the album.

I stopped using it for about 5 years because there was this truly cursed period where it wouldn't remember manual connections if you weren't logged in and wouldn't work without an active internet connection if you were logged in. Even after they fixed both of those there was still a 50/50 shot it would treat logged-in local devices as remote devices and stream out via your internet connection and then back in to the client device. In fact I still don't log my devices in if I don't have to.

The fact that usenet has still hung on all this time as more than just a place for people to share pirated files is honestly impressive, and also is a pretty decent endorsement. Unfortunately it has a fair number of weaknesses, especially in terms of moderation tools and access these days, but ultimately a lot of what people want in a social media platform can be found on usenet. An effort to update it for modern sensibilities might actually create something pretty cool.

In-app purchases, requires 3rd party account, and no LAN.

Wow. I'm barely willing to put up with that for a free game. Not a chance I'm gonna deal with that for a thrice-delayed game by a rookie studio.

We actually have one of these in Dayton, Nevada. Half hour away from Carson City, hour from Reno, not much to speak of at all in the town really (other than some historical interests) but there's an entire subdivision with a golf course and a small airfield and "hangar homes".

yukichigai ,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

It's not just that they're smart, it's that the "smart" features actively interfere with normal operation, though it's bad enough that you can't find "dumb" versions. TVs for example: a few years ago I tried to replace my dying "dumb" TV and discovered that they basically don't sell TVs that aren't smart. I figured "eh, worst case I can just use it as a normal TV" only to discover that on some models no, I could not. I've come to despise Roku-integrated TVs: standalone Roku devices are great, but their TVs lock down basically every single adjustment you'd find on a normal TV other than brightness and volume, so too bad if you have to deal with glare I guess?

Finally wound up going with an AndroidTV, which at least lets me change inputs and adjust the picture as needed... but also the home screen is loaded with ads that you can't disable. At least it still lets me have it boot straight to a specific input instead of showing the home screen.

yukichigai ,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Another one that gets me: buying things but not actually owning them. You buy a game but you don't actually own the game, you own a license to play a game on a service that might shut down sometime in the future or change their mind about the license they sold you. You buy an e-book but the storefront you bought it from might change or remove it, and then forcibly update or remove any copies you have on e-readers. Most people don't even buy movies or TV shows, they just subscribe to some streaming service, and if they do "buy" an electronic copy it's the same issue as e-books.

At least physical copies of movies and tv shows and books are still a thing, but even then we're heading towards a future where physical media may require phoning in before it'll play.

yukichigai ,

I've taken to calling people out who use the term unironically. Remind them that we're adults and we don't need cutesy euphemisms.

For what it's worth, when I do the response is generally supportive.

yukichigai ,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Every smart TV is like that now. Every single one has ads of some kind, at least that I've tried. I mean there might be one weird knockoff brand that doesn't but chances are it's got even larger problems, and forget about finding apps for it.

But yeah, I have my TV connected to the internet. One of the things I had plugged in to my old "dumb" TV was a Chromecast, and the Android TV has one built in... but that requires it be on the internet for it to work. It is running Android so you bet your ass I loaded it up with all sorts of sideloaded goodness (Revanced, SmartTube, Retroarch to name a few). I just haven't gotten around to replacing the launcher to get rid of the ads, since it's a bit involved.

Oh, also it didn't originally have ads, that came in an update about a year later. I'd care more if I spent much time on the home screen, but most of the time the TV's just displaying the output of the Roku.

yukichigai ,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Unfortunately it's becoming the norm. Some are less obtrusive or take up relatively little space, but every Smart TV I've used in the last year has some un-removable portion of the home screen that displays an ad. So far it's almost entirely limited to TV shows or movies or services or otherwise TV-related things, but it's really not hard to imagine that expanding to other goods and/or services.

yukichigai , (edited )
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

You still can. Not only that, you can install emulators and Retroarch, the thing is capable of running consoles up through PS1 games, though the button mapping for most games is a bit awkward.

Also !sbcgaming if you're into that sort of thing.

yukichigai ,

The Sega Dreamcast. Live CD distributions of Linux were really taking off around then, so some enterprising sorts decided to see if they could get Linux running on the Dreamcast. They partially succeeded, though accessing some of the hardware was... dicey. That said, the Dreamcast had a native keyboard adapter and they managed to get support for that going pretty quickly.

Unfortunately the project kind of stagnated, but you can read up on more of it on the sourceforge project page.

How to make an MP3 player work in 2023?

If I wanted an MP3 player again, in 2023, and wanted to rip cds to it and put digitally purchased albums on it, as actual owned files (not inside an proprietary ecosystem where I pay to only listen to that track within that service) could I still do that? What would I need? I don’t own, and can’t afford, a “real...

yukichigai ,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

MP3s compress down a lot, as low as 1 meg a minute for acceptable quality depending on the content. Newer codecs like Opus and AAC can easily do that with much better quality, and your Pixel will definitely be able to play them.

yukichigai ,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

I bought a first gen Sansa Clip ages ago on Black Friday sale and fell in love with the damn thing. Small but not too small, good controls, good sound, intuitive UI, uses universal drivers (not a sure thing at the time), even has an FM radio built in. I've picked up so many more advanced devices over the years but I keep coming back to it. It's just a solid piece of hardware.

Also you can install Rockbox on it and play DOOM, if you're into that sort of thing.

yukichigai ,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Opus consistently impresses me with how good audio sounds at ridiculous compression levels, both music and speech. 4 minutes of music not even breaking 900k and it sounds just as good as the ol' 128kbps mp3s, and that's stereo. Can't even imagine how much you could squeeze down mono audiobooks.

yukichigai ,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Communists? Nah, not a problem. I mean I'm a Star Trek fan, and while it's not played up that much the Federation is a post-scarcity socialist-adjacent society. I'm all for everyone having their basic needs met without condition or obligation, and money being obsolete.

Tankies though can fuck right off. North Korea is not a bastion of democracy. China is not more free than the US. This is not difficult to see.

yukichigai ,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Counterpoint: Riker.

Look, I know the Federation doesn't have money, but they probably brought it back just to charge Riker for all the extra cleanup required every time he visited the holodeck.

Personally I've had some issues with ads getting through 5 on a few devices. Version 4 always works in those cases, even though it's a bit less efficient (apparently).

Separate of that it also works with VPN Tunnel, which is great for getting around cell providers that block tethering.

yukichigai ,

From what I understand, that's difficult to do, and even if done it prevents the inline loading of images from those other instances at all.

Hopefully it'll be academic before long anyway. The CSAM attack lit a fire under the devs and changing this is now one of their highest priorities.
