@actuallyautistic Somehow got into an argument earlier about fractions with my parents, especially the fraction 15/16. I said that 7.5/8 is the same thing as 15/16, because they can be converted to each other by multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by 2.

My mom basically said, no, that's not right because it's not a "proper fraction" which doesn't make sense to me. The math checks out, and numerators can have decimal integers. Is there something I'm missing?

servelan ,
@servelan@newsie.social avatar

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic It's the same, but it's not a 'proper' fraction in that we express fractions as most people know them in common parlance as whole number/whole number. If you talk about the ratio of one integer to another, it's also the same, but when I type in '7.5/8', what comes up via the google is 15/16. Your 7.5/8 is an expression of the ratio, 15/16 is the fractional equivalent.

What are your thoughts on self-diagnosis being belittled by many in the autistic community?

For clarity, I’m not asking to start a debate, just a genuine discussion. I currently don’t have the option to get a diagnosis, but feel fairly confident that the research I’ve done over the past year and a half has been legitimate and credible.

I don’t feel comfortable saying that I am definitively autistic, but I am ok with saying I’m “self-suspecting.” @actuallyautistic

servelan ,
@servelan@newsie.social avatar

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic I don't think everybody needs a formal diagnosis to 'be' , but it can be empowering to know, like I know I have a legitimate reason to refuse jello, for example (sensory processing disorder; mostly textures and colors, but also volume/brightness).

We've been sent a huge questionnaire from our daughter's psychologist about her childhood and we are meeting with them in a few weeks time for an in depth interview.

There's some suggestion that she may be and this has played a major role in her troubles over recent years.

Oh fuck. Throughout the last few weeks I had some time off and I used it to work on my blog, reflecting on a few things...

All this was good, but it also triggered painful memories and I started to vaguely recall some events in childhood. When they come up, I feel like crying, but I can't access all of the memory. Don't know if it's a trauma-response or if I'm overreacting.

Now I feel I have to address this stuff, but it's overwhelming and I'm afraid of dealing with it.

servelan ,
@servelan@newsie.social avatar

@Sci_Fi_FanGirl @actuallyautistic Speaking from the perspective of someone with C-PTSD as well as plain ol' PTSD (on top of - such fun! /not)...sometimes you need to make a conscious choice to let the 'stuff' percolate to the surface in its own time so that you can process it incrementally and not all at once, because otherwise it can be re-traumatizing.

@actuallyautistic I just learned that stimulation of the body's proprioception systems in turn down regulates some aspects of the nervous system that are typically overactive for us.

I also learned proprioception stimulation is something Occupational Therapists prescribe for autistic clients.

Wondering if anyone can share any such exercises or methods an OT has prescribed for them?

Deep muscle & tissue stimulation is the general notion I've gathered so far.

servelan ,
@servelan@newsie.social avatar

@ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic I think my background anxiety level (from having an 'overclocked' brain) 's normally higher than it would be for an NT person, so it sounds like the muscle/tissue stimulation would help with the 'armoring' that accompanies that. I know when I worked with a trainer, the stretching helped tremendously.

Maybe look up PTSD related stretching?

Hey @actuallyautistic. I'm having a stressful time at work. It's currently unresolved and likely to be hanging over me for a bit. It's also mightily unfair, which means I'm low-level furious all the time.
Generally I'm good at the usual coping mechanisms - taking breaks, drinking and eating regularly, making time for hobbies and exercise, spending time with family. But this is hard and I'm finding none of that is making much of a dent.
Any suggestions? What helps you when you need to cope?

servelan ,
@servelan@newsie.social avatar

@Jobob @actuallyautistic L-theanine is good for calming; it's the stuff in green tea w/0 trips to the can. I hear ashwagandha's good, too.

Weed's really good for anxiety, not so much stress (which it sounds like is causing you to be angry, not anxious). Booze doesn't work well for anxiety from my experience, and anger and booze isn't a good combo. Take one day (or hour) at a time; this, too, shall pass.

RavenLuni , to actuallyautistic

Feeling pretty rattled after an interaction with a beggar but I guess even an NT would have trouble with this one:

  • walked by the first time

  • felt bad, so passed again and put what I had in my pocket in her cup (which happened to be £10)

  • saw her again later sheltering from the rain in a doorway and she called me over and thanked me which was fine but then she asked if I could give more and really started pleading.

Whats the moral here - are you not supposed to give people more than a certain amount?
@actuallyautistic

servelan ,
@servelan@newsie.social avatar

@RavenLuni @actuallyautistic If that £10 was all you had to give, you have done what you can. If you had £100 in your pocket you were going to spend on something frivolous that you knew you really didn't need, you could give as much as you felt comfortable with. If you had no more you could spare, say so, gently.

I once had a relationship with an AuDHD male. He had a certain trait. It's not very common, but I have heard from people that experience this.
It was scary and it ended the realtionship. He used to get into a form of meltdown where he would be uncontrollably agitated.. Rage, despair, IDK what to call it. It looked like anger. And then he would loose the memory about what had transpired. He did not recall what he had said or how he had behaved. It must be hard to live with this, cus I am sure, it wrecks relationships, period. Now I am curious, have any of you this trait, has anyone experienced this, either in my role or in his? I would be interested to hear more about this. I recently talked to him after many years of silence. It brought this all up. He didn't know about his neurodivergence at the time.
