I was curious about an actor in a show I like, so I attempted to find out if she is autistic. When asked in interviews, she skirts the question, but she wrote a whole story about an autistic heroine where she plays the staring role herself. Despite trying not to jump to conclusions, I find myself making assumptions.

What do you all think? Is that bad? Should I try to resist doing that? Is that my brain trying to categorize everything in neat boxes?

I'm sitting in the dark, with the window blinds closed, because I feel like I just need it that way right now for no discernable reason. This is probably what my therapist means by nervous system regulation and emotional regulation. 🤔

I really like sensory deprivation—sometimes even more than others.

I kind of miss sometimes how in the old place, random celebrities would sometimes pop up in my mentions (even some of the ones I didn't know were celebrities and had to look up) 🤪

JeremyMallin OP ,
@JeremyMallin@autistics.life avatar

I often have a very different idea of who is a celebrity than most people have.

Examples: that physicist whose books I've read, the managing editor of that scientific journal I've heard of, that one (more than one actually) stand-up comedian that no one has ever heard of, that obscure author whose books I love, et al.

I wonder if that's an autism thing?

I finished season one of A Kind Of Spark. Thank you everyone for recommending it. It is excellent and extremely relatable.

Also. It's based on a book by Elle McNicoll if anyone is interested.

I believe that autistic burnout is something that other people do to us rather than something we do to ourselves.

It's not simply that we mask too much or work too hard; society requires us to do those things. The choice is not ours.

Those are not the only things that cause burnout. Bigotry and abuse from others also causes burnout. Constant sensory Hell also causes burnout. Anything that keeps us out of equilibrium causes burnout.

I originally thought the hashtag ActuallyAutistic was specifically that in part because many of us (as I do) overuse the word "actually".—I learned a long time ago its true origin and meaning though.

I was curious (and still am) what other words we tend to overuse. For me I've come up with these so far:

• actually
• indeed
• fascinating
• interesting

Are there any other common ones?

How come noticing minute facial asymmetries in people is considered an autism thing? And if it is, what causes it? Do NTs really not notice these things?

For the record, I very often do recognize asymmetries others don't.

• with autism

@actuallyautistic

@actuallyautistic
Thanks everyone for all the great responses.
I'm seeing two general categories of discomfort related to getting mess on hands: the sensory issue itself and germophobia.

I'm greatly affected by both of these. I was originally mainly thinking about the sensory issues.

I especially hate getting anything oily or sticky on my hands because it is very uncomfortable and also because it doesn't wash off easily. I absolutely hate ointments.
