If I ever have to job seek again, I’m probably gonna just hand write my resume on a crumpled piece of notebook paper to make it stand out from the AI generated drivel.

I’m only sort of not joking.

That logic is sound, and I certainly can’t fault it, but personally, I refuse to use the problem to solve / deal with the problem. Call me stubborn (everyone else does lol), but I will not buy a solution from the same industry that created the problem. At most, I’ll let the “AI” fill out the unemployment forms for me lol.

I’m immediately suspicious of anything that says “earn crypto rewards” so that’s a “no” from me.

I just use Searx-NG as my meta search engine, and it’s been pretty good.

There’s another self-hosted actual search engine (with its own dataset + crawler) but I forget its name off the top of my head. I’ve been looking into setting that up to experiment with.

@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I’ve heard of that one recently, but the one I was thinking of was Stract. Had to search through a few communities to find it because I’m a genius who didn’t bookmark it lol.

ptz ,

Yep! Wish I’d have seen your reply before digging though old posts to find that lol.

I was wondering that, actually. Many instances predate the Rexodus, but a lot of them sprung up around the same time as a result of that.

Trying to think of some way to celebrate on my instance. Maybe a birthday hat on my site icon for the day? lol

I’ve seen the reference a lot, but I don’t understand it. At this point, I’m too afraid to ask. lol

NGL, I’d probably watch that.

Just realizing I’m not fit to be president. Because if someone made even vague threats against my dogs, and I had access to drones…yeah.

They would definitely be the most likely to lead the way.

Unfortunately for us, unlike with hardware requirements like USB-C, software restrictions likely wouldn’t cross the pond.

[Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?

Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don’t come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don’t really get upset by...

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Yeah I don’t get it either. You do you 🤷🏼‍♂️

As long as people aren’t trying to force their views on me (veganism, religion, what have you), I couldn’t care less.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

omg.

I saw someone comment the other day that his idiot followers were saying that, but assumed it was satire (what little shreds of satire still exist thanks to the clown pictured here).

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

What format does it get converted into? Can you post a link that you got back (even in the comments)?

Each instance can configure pict-rs (the media subsystem, basically) a number of different ways or even disable videos entirely (or convert them to gifs, etc).

Regardless of format, Lemmy+Pict-rs isn’t really setup for videos longer than a few seconds (pict-rs has to transcode the upload, and there’s a hard timeout between Lemmy and pict-rs). Most people either upload to catbox and put the .mp4 link as the post URL or post a YT or Peer Tube link.

I don’t know much about Moondrop’s line of phones, but I do love that Apple removed the headphone jack, Samsung naturally copied them, and Moondrop comes along and says “you know what? We’ll add two headphone jacks”.

Respect.

(I absolutely still use the 3.5mm jack)

Some people on reddit hate the community here.

Reading that post, they’re clearly judging Lemmy as a whole based on .ml and/or grad. Which, to be fair, they have a point. I really feel .ml as the “flagship” instance (official or just de-facto) is doing more harm to the overall “Reddit-like” corner of the fediverse than good.

I don’t mind Snaps in a vacuum, but the unforgivable thing is that they messed with the package repo so that instead of installing a deb package as I intended, it installs a Snap stub which I did not want. If Canonical hadn’t forced them on users in that way, I’d have been fine with them.

Instead, back to Debian I went (sorry I ever left, actually)

I searched a few of the bigger instances, but didn’t find one. It’s been almost a year, so I figure if one was going to pop up, it would have by now.

So, I made one: !its_a_unix_system (dubvee.org/c/its_a_unix_system)

Will try to get a few posts up soon.

Same. I’m a big fan of interactive schematic views in general. There’s a few more (when the door locks go down and when Lex boots them back up) that are almost as cool.

Around 3:14, I thought they were about to start a mosh pit. lol

So many questions, though. Do cows respond to any music? Just low-frequencies? Were they just investigating a weird, non-threatening thing? Is that their favorite song? Do the farmers play at feeding time (assuming they supplement their grazing with feedstock)?

Either way, that’s cool.

Russian state media is posting more on TikTok ahead of the U.S. presidential election, study says (apnews.com)

I’m holding out for free-range lab-grown meat. /s

I’m actually excited to try it if ever given the opportunity. Have been incorporating meat alternatives over the last 2 years and have cut out about 70% of my former beef consumption. Which, for me, is a lot.

This asshole carpetbagger is also running for governor here, and he has a lot of support.

He’s also a perfect explainer for why I absolutely can’t stand the “I don’t like Trump, but BiDen BaD” crowd (among other reasons, but I’ll stick to the points at hand):

I live in a very red state. The 4 Republican gubernatorial candidates consist of 3 ghouls and one somewhat sane person. I don’t even know who the democratic candidate is, so what does that tell you? Even if I knew who the democratic candidates were, I know full well they don’t have a chance in hell of getting elected. (And even if they did, they’d likely switch parties like the current governor and my current delegate did after getting elected 😠)

So, ever the pragmatist, I’ve pretty much come to the conclusion that I’m going to have to hold my nose and vote for the least-worst republican candidate in order to prevent a worse republican candidate (the asshole pictured here) from getting elected. I would never vote for that candidate in a vacuum, but because we lack ranked choice voting, I am going to have to in order to stop someone worse.

It sucks, but it’s reality, and no amount of whining, bitching, moaning, or negging between now and election day is going to change that.

So if I can hold my nose and vote for a republican for the first time, well, ever, then surely people can hold their noses and vote for Biden when the alternative is another 4+ years of Trump .

@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Agreed. But also, “well…fuck”.

I thought the primaries here were open, but they’re not; you can only vote your party. For some reason I thought I recalled both R and D candidates on the primary ballots, but I’m definitely mis-remembering (I just double-checked). Kinda nullifies my whole rant there a bit. Still, I was ready to vote for a republican, so I guess that has to count for something.

It may also be too late to change my party affiliation (primary is in 14 days).

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Well, it’s too late to change it now for the primary. In the general it doesn’t matter. Basically, I should have paid attention to the R candidates sooner. For my own mental health, I had been intentionally ignoring them.

My aunt did.

She got suspicious when her online companion kept asking her to buy stuff and ship it. She didn’t catch on immediately, and the family had to explain to her she was doing something illegal and that it was a scam (even though he was reimbursing her).

(She later did remarry a non-scammer, so happy ending I guess).

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I think it was to get around embargoes? This was probably late 90s, early 2000s so she was buying stuff at like Circuit City/Walmart/etc and shipping it off.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Definitely fits here, IMO. Classifying truck drivers based on the cargo they’re hauling is kind of crazy (unless the company has its own freight division).

Also, is it poor form to post both here and …

If it fits both, then post to both. Most UIs will roll up crossposts now, and usually only one is shown directly in the feed. That said, at least in my opinion, posting to two communities back to back is plenty. Any more, and it starts to feel a bit spammy (regardless of whether they’re rolled up into the crossposts). I’m sure you’ll get different answers based on who you ask, but that’s my take on it.
