MrSoup OP ,

Thank you, it makes sense.

I’ve tried to install some apps from Aurora store (denying network permission) and then I saw these requests on TrackerControl, so maybe those apps wantend to be opened by default with these links.

MrSoup ,

From video description:

Reason 1: Gaming
Reason 2: Creative Apps
Reason 3: Foobar2000 (my music player)
Reason 4 (bonus) Fussing, fussing, fussing!

MrSoup ,

Did Sony used “MacDonald’s” brand in a patent diagram? Can you link the source?

MrSoup , (edited )

I don’t see any technical specification in the article, but if they inject the ad at the start of the video, making it part of the video itself, would make possible to just skip it using video controls. To avoid user skippin ad thru video controls there should be client-side script blocking it, so an ad-blocker can use this to tell apart an ad from the video itself.

Can anyone correct me on this?

Also, would this affect piped and invidious too?

MrSoup ,

Seems too much, really. Even if they do such a terrible thing, would they not expose a “report ad” or “see the product” buttons? Video buffer is still locally downloaded.

MrSoup ,

How does this actually works? Can you point me to technical documentation about this?

I’ve only found info about SSAI, not about SSAP. Is it the same?

MrSoup ,

I still don’t get why GNOME moved to RDP instead of sticking with VNC.
Embracing Microsoft technologies to better fit offices?

MrSoup ,

I’ve used a bit xrdp and even less vnc. Can you please elaborate why is rdp better?

In response to the lemmy.ml moderation polemic: beware of bad faith agents!

One of the biggest topics of these days is that of mods in lemmy.ml banning and censoring people because they’re Tankies. This has had a rather sizeable discussion of people agreeing and even arguing for defederating ml. I’m sure a lot of people are arguing from good intentions, but there’s also bad faith actors among...

MrSoup ,

Politics is endangering the whole Lemmy, with instances defederated because of their political views and a lot of censorship.

Calm down folks! This is a web forum, people should be free to share what they think (without harassing anyone) without being censored, creating a biased platform.

I’m not into non-free-speech instances (like lemmy.world), but I do understand and respect their decision because it MAY decrease harassment between users. But please don’t defederate with everyone otherwise it would still be a biased platform. Let people choose what to see and just ban spam and real harassment (I’ve used too much this word).

I’m not into politics myself and it drives me crazy that we can’t rely on fine communities because they are on instances defederated by big instances because of their political views.

Vimms Lair is getting removal notices from Nintendo etc. We need someone to help make a rom pack archive can you help? (slrpnk.net)

Vimms lair is starting to remove many roms that are being requested to be removed by Nintendo etc. soon many original roms, hacks, and translations will be lost forever. Can any of you help make archive torrents of roms from vimms lair and cdromance? They have hacks and translations that dont exist elsewhere and will probably be...

Seems to be based mostly on Fedora by reading the Readme.

I would like to know if it does use systemd and/or other redhat technologies.

In the readme they mention Qt, does anyone know what DE do they use?

MrSoup ,

I know Microsoft gave Gnome a donation of 10.000$ because they use Ubuntu (which use Gnome) and inside the repo (inside SPECS folder) I’ve seen gnome-commons to build gnoem stuff.

But yes, this is probably a server distro without a DE.

MrSoup ,

Still, monthly active users are goin down.

MrSoup ,

You are right. In the graph there is a rise, but inside “Total MAU” pill it says “-47,901 since last month”.

MrSoup OP , (edited )

The point of this dialog is to choose which image to share with the app without giving full permissions. In fact the app itself does not ask for storage permissions at all.

And I can see all the pictures in Photos view anyway, so I don’t think it’s a permission issue.

Edit:
In installed apps list there is “Media picker” which COULD be this. It does not ask for storage-related permissions.

MrSoup OP ,

“This app can only access the photos you select [in this dialog]”.

This is a system dialog to let the user choose pictures to share with app. It’s not an app dialog which can’t see things without permissions.

The same dialog is shown in multiple apps, here in the screenshot the app in question is DarkModeLiveWallpaper (f-droid) which do not have storage-related permissions at all. I can’t give permissions it does not request. So it is not an app permission issue.

Also, every app shows the same one folder in Albums view: screenshots.

Linux admin with 20 years experience, looking for "beginner" distro [Solved, the real beginner distro was the Debian I've used along the way]

I’m over tinkering with my OS. So I’m looking for a distro that “just works” out of the box for my laptop. Also I want to test an “easy” distro I can install for my grandpa....

MrSoup ,

Fedora asks you to enable third party non-foss repos like Steam and Chrome, but still you have to manually enable rpmfusion. Plus idk if new install of Fedora ships codecs pre-installed.

MrSoup ,

Mostly of packages from Fedora is also Flatpaks from Red Hat’s server (not Flathub)

That’s not true. Fedora used to have a Fedora flatpak repo but now they simply ship with flathub enabled by default.

About RPM, I don’t know if Gnome Software Center is able to handle it

Yes, it can

MrSoup ,

Try enabling “Use HLS” inside:
3 dots > Settings > Audio and video

MrSoup , (edited )

I was using LibreTube only as a music player and was a bit unreliable (sometimes it would crash or get stuck in infinite loading). Trying to use it for videos was impossible, since trying to skip even just 10s the video would load endlessly or just go black and freeze.

So I looked up on their github issue tracker and found this pinned.

MrSoup ,

Try enabling “Use HLS” inside:
3 dots > Settings > Audio and video

See this.

MrSoup ,

If LibreTube is not working for you (the reader, not OP), enable HLS here:
3 dots > Settings > Audio and video > Use HLS

See this.

MrSoup ,

To fix 1002 errors Piped project disabled ump with this commit: TeamPiped/Piped-Backend@

Which breaks DASH for some reason

From issue thread.

MrSoup ,

Quiblr (PWA) is very similar to Reddit UI, take a look

MrSoup ,

Are like Discord federated.
Matrix can be used also in place of Telegram/Whatsapp.

MrSoup OP ,

Thanks for the heads up, didnt know it. Maybe something similar is available in other clients too and I just missed it.

MrSoup ,

Reject all not essential

MrSoup , (edited )

I use fennec (firefox from f-droid) with uBlock using all the filters, so I get no popups anymore.

Can opt to automatically open links in private navigation too.

MrSoup ,

Plus I think there will be a way to disable it (like with local translation we have rn).

MrSoup ,

How do I add text in… nevermind, got it.

Kicked macOS to the Curb and Installed Asahi Fedora Gnome

Most of the switching posts are from frustrated windows users making the jump. I’m already a Linux user on my server (Ubuntu for now, going Debian at some point) and a 2014 iMac for tinkering/testing (KDE Neon), and a couple of raspberry pis (raspberry pi os headless) but our main household computer is an M1 Mac mini that my...

MrSoup , (edited )

For M1 macs the best (if not the only) linux distro is Asahi Linux and their flagship is Fedora Asahi Remix (which is a collaboration between Asahi Linux and the Fedora Project).

Maybe that’s why OP chose it.

MrSoup ,

Copr is like Ubuntu’s ppa

MrSoup ,

Apple M1 isn’t just a CPU, is a SoC which holds a CPU and a GPU.

MrSoup , (edited )

It’s not just about the SoC itself and GPU needs drivers to work.

Edit:
If you would like to know more about adding support for a new SoC on Linux, check out Asahi Linux blog.

MrSoup OP ,

I was looking for something adaptive, which would follow room light color.
Thanks anyway for reply.

MrSoup OP ,

That’s not based on room light color and share the same white point of other profiles.

Newish user migrating to Linux

I have been using Arch Linux with i3wm for around 5 years for work, on my ThinkPad. I am fairly comfortable with pacman and setting up a distro. I have previously tried Mint, Manjaro, KDE Neon, Elementary, and MX Linux, all for the same use case (Work: where I need a browser, Slack, and a MongoDB GUI)....

MrSoup ,

For games I find Lutris more comfortable than bottles.

MrSoup , (edited )

It has more granular settings aimed at games, like having antimicro and mangohud toggles (for antimicro you can select a map to use). Gives many versions of wine to use (even custom ones like GE). Plus, I can use it to launch other games which does not need wine, like emulators or native ones.

To me it gives no hussle and UI is not that bad.

Bottles seems more aimed at software.
