Mastodon really isn’t that difficult to hook into. I hope they federate at some point.

My real worry with Google's voyage into enshittification (thanks to Cory Doctorow @pluralistic the term) is YouTube.

Through YT, for the past 15 years, the world has basically entrusted Google to be the custodian of pretty much our entire global video archive.

There's countless hours of archived footage — news reports, political speeches, historical events, documentaries, indie films, academic lectures, conference presentations, rare recordings, concert footage, obscure music — where the best or only copy is now held by Google through YouTube.

So what happens if maintaining that archival footage becomes unprofitable?

@technology

mesamunefire ,

Archive.org is where a lot of these videos are getting archived.

Has anyone here built a Beowulf Cluster? (spinoff.nasa.gov)

A university near me must be going through a hardware refresh, because they’ve recently been auctioning off a bunch of ~5 year old desktops at extremely low prices. The only problem is that you can’t buy just one or two. All the auction lots are batches of 10-30 units....

I did a whole ago just to see what it was all about. Then got rid of the setup a week later. It’s a cool project but I needed the other boxes. If you need a huge amount of parallel operations (and want to self host) it’s a decent option.

mesamunefire ,

Every year is record setting heat in our area. Fire season is now a thing.

mesamunefire ,

Use a google voice number or give it bunk data. But it is BS.

mesamunefire ,

Worked for me?

mesamunefire ,

That sucks. Maybe they changed it recently or something. Darn. Well gl!

mesamunefire ,

I work in government and we have systems that are planning on going live that will automate entire departments away coming in 2024-2025. It’s not perfect but it is being iterated like you said. It’s all about reducing headcount over the long run.

mesamunefire ,

Gitlab/gitea might be better. GH is getting more and more DMCAed.

mesamunefire ,

My steamdeck makes me feel like I’ve gone 3rd party. It’s affordable and can run about 90 percent of releases. Plus indies and it’s not locked down by anything.

mesamunefire ,

Emulation and working with many different stores (not just steam).

Many players have become "patient gamers". What are games people might miss out on by waiting for sales?

Sales follow the tradition of supply and demand. Products come out at their highest price because of expectations and hype. Then, as interest wanes, the publisher continues to make some sales by reducing price to tempt the less interested parties....

mesamunefire ,

FP2 was a fantastic game. I loved it. I also liked Crosscode and Coromon. Both have the pixel look that I love and both were fun to me.

mesamunefire ,

Nice! That’s an older system. Fun times.

mesamunefire ,

Popos is a pretty good distro. That or mint.

mesamunefire ,

Puppy Linux.

mesamunefire ,

Puppy has their own but can be based on a lot of the main distros. I’ve used it to recover data from many a computer.

mesamunefire OP ,

He does an excellent job at the different chip types. His channel is really impressive.

mesamunefire ,

Hopefully Microsoft will give it a more open release. I doubt it, but it would be nice.

Finding raspberry pis have been really hard after 2019. It’s too bad, it’s my favorite single board computer.

mesamunefire ,

One of my favorite retro games. Never beat it myself. Nice setup!

mesamunefire ,

What’s the dumbest new car? That’s what I want.

mesamunefire ,

I would immediately break something like that. I wish I had that kind of time/expertise.

mesamunefire ,

In 10 years, when we move off discord for “the next big thing” all that info will be gone yet again. It happened to slack and it will most likely happen to discord. None of it will be indexed too. Fun times.

mesamunefire ,

It’s kinda funny on Reddit, you would have had to pay for your picture comment. I’m happy to donate to lemmy, but putting features like this behind paywalls is silly.

mesamunefire ,

It was recent.

mesamunefire ,

Google maps has been getting worse as well. I’ve been moving off after many years of using it.

mesamunefire ,

Osm+. It took a long time to set up, but it was worth it. What also helped is downloading as many local maps as possible and set up favorites. It’s not perfect, but for what I use it for, I like it.

mesamunefire ,

Computer Science was great dont get me wrong, but I totally agree. Comp Sci helped with some of the basics, but didnt prepare you at all on the soft skills that get you ahead, nor why task management, version control, and other such concepts are so important.

mesamunefire ,

Totally agree! git is a standard for a reason.

It never fails too how many times I have to teach jr devs git right off the bat. Its just weird enough to require a little bit of handholding when they start.

mesamunefire ,

Hackaday! Its a great place to find projects and see what others are doing. gamingonlinux to learn about new games.

mesamunefire ,

I’m wondering if we will need to tweak our Internet protocols to include interplanetary time? I would imagine mirroring would be much more important. Because light can only go so fast.

My old place of employment told everyone that they had to go back to office earlier this year. 1 month later, about 10 people out of a 15-ish department found remote jobs. They just shuttered the local office after a couple more months. My new place is much better :).

Most of us are experienced software developers or software adjacent. There is a lot of companies looking.

mesamunefire ,

Yep! I was lucky in a way, I had a friend of mine who recently got a job that needed help/was hiring. There were a couple people when they let go of everyone that is still looking for work.

WFH jobs are a huuuuge benefit.

mesamunefire ,

There was a fan mod that did the same a long time ago from what I remember.

mesamunefire ,

I would love a full kit for the open book. Or a preassembled one. I just don’t have the time anymore to solder/assemble it but I would pay a good amount for the open book.

mesamunefire ,

There’s a version with the pi pico github.com/joeycastillo/The-Open-Book

mesamunefire ,

You can unzip an epub and find out. Ive done it a couple of times to remove some images from books.

unzip book.epub

mesamunefire ,

That would be great!

I also have a Kobo, Calibre works great with it (Calibre is a life saver) but it would be nice to get something that is more open.

mesamunefire ,

Yep got one of Ben eaters kits in the back.
