GL. The best thing about the fediverse is the creation of new and exciting projects that will come and go.

mesamunefire ,

My research was literally on AI back in college. Most AI solutions are just basic algorithms and don’t use real AI solutions. There’s a huge difference.

mesamunefire ,

2nd a doctor.

mesamunefire ,

A VPN sure. I’m not sure about Nord.

mesamunefire OP , (edited )

Is there such a thing as federated dns servers, self hosted or otherwise? I don’t particularly care about piracy but I can see this dominoing into abortion, lgtq+ ect…ect…

mesamunefire OP ,

Would pihole work if all the major DNS that gets pulled resolved the same? I would imagine the change would only work for a while.

mesamunefire OP ,

Any good lists? Because pihole defaults to the aforementioned servers.

mesamunefire ,

Yep just ping time and latency make this a no go for a vast majority of us.

mesamunefire ,

I got stardew working on a local network and playing on the miyoo mini. It was cool for the novelty, but had terrible performance outside a local network. After only a couple of hops it’s unplayable and will disconnect.

mesamunefire ,

Yep its easier than ever to get into it and even works with games via steam now. My computer runs soo much faster than with windows.

mesamunefire OP ,

Steam Deck and other Linux handhelds make it super easy to play indies.

mesamunefire ,

Yeah its really too bad. I used to love the company but now I just don’t see them making things for hobbies. Anyone know of some good alternatives? Ive heard good things about lepotato?

mesamunefire ,

You can do the same in mastodon. It’s great.

mesamunefire OP ,

Why make money once when you can get people hooked on a subscription and pay many times the value?

Is Craigslist Dying?

I went to Craigslist in my local area for the first time in awhile. I used to like “best of” Craigslist because some of them were great, there still are some, but its just not the same. A community I used to visit had about half the number of posts as I remember, and of jobs and things for sale, I would say roughly half the...

mesamunefire ,

Not where I’m at. Less young people have Facebook so will use other services like Craigslist. Yard sales are also popular.

Blogger Alternative for the Fediverse

[UPDATE] Thank you for your comments but I found that Write Freely was well on paper but not funny to set up (self hosting) and maybe a little dead. I found that bearblog.dev met the specifications well. Although it is not integrated into the Fediverse, it is free and respectful of privacy!...

mesamunefire ,

I heard that WordPress has some sort of fediverse plugin, but no idea how far they got.

mesamunefire OP ,

I wonder sometimes if the numbers are wrong. For example a server I host is up quite a bit in user count and posts, but according to the site the numbers are down considerably. It’s strange but it’s only a less than 20ish users setup. Plus not all federated services act the same.

Some have sub/supersets of the protocol implemented. For example, bookwyrms way of working with posts are wildly different than mastodon and hashtags will work one way and not the other.

I think it ultimately means that number may not be as accurate for a while while all these different servers figure out what it means to be federated.

mesamunefire OP ,

Yeah I love being in a union. It’s 👍

mesamunefire ,

There’s been people talking about making a federated version (of LinkedIn), but I havent seen any actual code written.

I think it has potential, but without enough people wanting to hop on, it will be an empty solution.

mesamunefire ,

That’s true! Lol anyone hiring? My place just started a hiring freeze.

Looking to get into android development

I want to start learning android dev and I understand that I’ll need the android sdk and cli tools. I want to try it in a kvm because even though it is open source, I would like to keep it separate from my main system. Which distro and vm settings do you suggest I use? Any other tips or your experience with android development...

mesamunefire ,

Anything that can run android studio basically. And Debian can.

What's your server wattage?

I’m in the process of wiring a home before moving in and getting excited about running 10g from my server to the computer. Then I see 25g gear isn’t that much more expensive so I might was well run at least one fiber line. But what kind of three node ceph monster will it take to make use of any of this bandwidth (plus run...

mesamunefire ,

My pi costs probably around 20 a year lol.

mesamunefire OP ,

New tool to help track heat and heat related health issues.

mesamunefire ,

reddit is about the same in my opintion, but I do see a lot more activity on the lemmy side. I think its a combination of:

  1. Less rules around communities. The barrier of entry is much lower here to post, and things dont get auto-removed because of trigger happy mods.
  2. 2% of users post 90% of content. And a lot of them moved over to lemmy.
  3. Servers can be brought into existence and removed at will. This may seem like a bad thing, but what it means is that the best lemmy servers can evolve and be successful in a way reddit cant. Some have different modifications to make them more user friendly, some have excellent uptime, etc…etc…
  4. People from mastodon/misskey/other fediverse instances can comment/post. Even if that is not what a vast majority of us do, it does help the numbers and will continue to help engagement.

Also to @Blaze Do you know if the sats above take into account the generally banned instances of lemmy? I know that a lot of instances earlier this year decided to become de-federated from the general fediverse. Do you happen to know if the website take into account those servers?

mesamunefire ,

Fair enough.

mesamunefire ,

Self hosting piped helps too. Love my little system.

mesamunefire ,

Lemmy instances are designed to be born and die. So it’s a good thing in my opinion.

mesamunefire ,

Not the op but not now by the sound of it.

mesamunefire OP ,

There’s a lot of other people that use this instance. And I found it because I looked for a hashtag in tiltube, another peertube instance.

I never had any luck but joinpeertube.org/en_US/browse-content does exist.
