I think it’s the same here in Canada as I find most regular ketchup (especially Heinz) sickly sweet. I actually buy a no sugar added variant that’s much better to me. It tastes more like tomato-infused vinegar.

herrcaptain ,

Lead poisoning is a gateway drug to conservatism.

herrcaptain ,

But it always has been. (Unfortunately.)

Google will start showing AI-powered search results to users who didn't opt in (www.engadget.com)

If you’re in the US, you might see a new shaded section at the top of your Google Search results with a summary answering your inquiry, along with links for more information. That section, generated by Google’s generative AI technology, used to appear only if you’ve opted into the Search Generative Experience(SGE) in the...

As someone in IT I get an employer enforcing Edge (I don’t do that, but I understand why an IT department might), but why would anyone enforce a specific search engine? That seems bonkers to me.

herrcaptain ,

Ah, I see what you mean. That still sucks but at least you still have the (less convenient) option of using an alternative. I had understood it as being that they blocked everything but Bing.

herrcaptain ,

Interestingly, the original version of the game was designed to show that monopolizing land into the hands of landlords was a bad thing. So, its roots are somewhat progressive in nature.

herrcaptain ,

But in its quest to be hot, it became no longer cool.

September 87 - Bad Dream Baby [6:13, synthwave] (www.youtube.com)

Inspired by another recent synthwave post here, I thought I’d share a different aspect of the genre. Whereas a lot of synthwave has a dystopian John Carpenter feel to it (which I think is great!), tons of groups sit on the other thematic side of 80s throwback, having a more upbeat John Hughes movie kinda sound....

herrcaptain OP ,

Yes! I hope they do more with Dream Fiend. Outland is also great, but I’ll agree that Light Years is my fave of the pair.

herrcaptain OP ,

Yeah, it feels right out of the 80s and fits the music perfectly.

herrcaptain ,

This is great! I got super into synthwave over Christmas (and annoyed the fuck out of my wife with my new obsession). I vastly prefer stuff with vocals but so much of the genre is just instrumental. I’ve particularly been trying to find more bands that scratch the same itch as Gunship, with little luck. This track, at least, might have come the closest. Thanks!

herrcaptain ,

Logically, in the thoughts.

Balls -> Thoughts -> Pee

herrcaptain ,

For real, with the shitty state of modern search engines I’d love to see the return of webrings.

herrcaptain ,

I describe Lemmy to my associates as, "Reddit except it’s mostly leftists, trans people, and Linux users "

herrcaptain ,

At least with jumping from Windows 8 to Windows 10 there was a realistic reason for it. I don’t remember the specifics but it was to reduce the risk of breaking third-party software coded with some janky way of determining Windows versions.

The rest of the naming jumps, I’m sure, were just the whims of whoever was in charge of the project at that time.

herrcaptain ,

With a version number like that they should have throttled the throughput to 69 Gbps.

herrcaptain ,

I don’t drink myself, but I imagine that for those who do cost would be a real factor these days as well.

herrcaptain ,

Every time I listen to Jeff Buckley I get a little bummed out that the world will never get to experience what he might have created had he not died so young. Legit one of the best songwriters in rock.

Edit: Also, this is my go-to reference track when configuring or testing a sound system. Gorgeous production.

herrcaptain ,

Looks aside, I feel like pockets on a couch is actually a decent idea.

herrcaptain ,

I’m assuming this just relates to WordPress.com rather than the open-source WordPress.org but it’s still a bummer. I’ve worked with the open source platform for over a dozen years and have started to kinda loathe what it’s turned into but I’m not sure I’m yet at the point where I’m ready to migrate a bunch of sites to something else. This could be that push if they keep going down this road.

God, am I getting too old for this shit? I’m a pretty technical person but this AI nonsense is just relentless. I’m not philosophically against the idea of AI as like any tool it has the potential to better the world, but every tech company and their dog are going all in on using it for commercial bullshit that seems to provide very little value to society. Even fucking Mozilla is going in that direction.

herrcaptain ,

True, and I get that realistically they do need to diversify away from Firefox … but it still feels bandwagoney to me given that seemingly every tech company (and Wendy’s) are piling into the AI train all at once. Like I said, though, I think I’m just getting too old for this.

herrcaptain ,

Glad to hear it - I haven’t thought to check for myself.

herrcaptain ,

Hey, it’s not easy to make a shitty new redesign of a site. That stuff costs money.

herrcaptain ,

I always thought so too, but apparently we’re now learning that they can survive a trip through a sewer. They’ve at least got that going for them.

herrcaptain ,

Damn, it’s gotta suck to be born an immune cell and get assigned to work out of the butthole for your short life.

What's the food young children make in other cultures?

In the US it’s not crazy for kids maybe as young as 6 to make themselves sandwiches like a PB&J/Ham & Cheese either if parents have an emergency, or to take to lunch for themselves because parents didn’t have time. (Or you know, they’re neglectful)...

herrcaptain ,

Maybe not age 6, but pretty early:

  • Fry egg
  • Soup (from bag, add hot water)

My Lemmy app didn’t properly format this as a list so I read it as “Fry egg-soup.” I found myself thinking, “Fried soup? Damn, Norwegians do soup on a whole different level.”

herrcaptain ,

Sir, are you the Pirate Bay? I feel like you’re single-handedly keeping a tracker alive.

herrcaptain ,

Are you a living episode of Seinfeld? This sounds like a scenario George Costanza would get himself into.

herrcaptain ,

For real. Symphonic metal is already great - let’s give whatever this mashup is a shot.

herrcaptain ,

Plus, he likes to pretend he’s an expert on the industries of the companies he runs. That’s already potentially dangerous with Tesla and Space X, but in this case his hubris is very directly dangerous to the people receiving his services.

herrcaptain ,

Wait … the ping is coming from inside the house!

herrcaptain ,

Congrats, Germany, on doing the right thing. If tobacco and alcohol are legal, weed absolutely should be as well.

It’s been legal in Canada for a few years now and society hasn’t crumbled as a result. All it means is more tax dollars, less organized crime, and less people being thrown in jail for using a relatively harmless substance.

Note: I don’t use myself, it’s just a no-brainer to legalize it.

herrcaptain ,

You’re certainly not wrong, but at least the legalization part is a step in the right direction.

herrcaptain ,

I legit included that as a qualifier precisely because I agree that society seems to be getting worse in a lot of other respects.

herrcaptain ,

Thanks for making me spend like 30 seconds of my life reviewing someone’s grocery receipt. We’re really starting to stretch the mildy part of mildly interesting, but apparently I’m here for it.

herrcaptain ,

I mean … if it was mildly interesting enough.

herrcaptain ,

I don’t have any experience with CoreOS so can’t help you on that front. That said, it sounds like the server in question isn’t mission-critical in the first place and you seem to have come up with a good argument for trying it out. Why not give it a go and see how it works out?

herrcaptain ,

This is an excellent point. My benchmark for something like this is, “What would cause my wife to migrate from Reddit to Lemmy?” The answer is a Digg-level fiasco where the majority of users leave.

Those of us who already swore off Reddit in favor of this platform are vastly the exception. Most people follow the herd when it comes to social media.

That said, as much as I’d love to see a larger userbase and more active niche communities here, I’m quite happy with our incremental growth. The fediverse feels a lot more like the community of the early internet, which is something I really missed.

herrcaptain ,

I just store mine in memory (meat memory, not the computer stuff). If someone wants the source code I just tell them. Version control by oral tradition.

herrcaptain ,

I fully agree with you, but the problem is that inevitably conservative governments will find a way to privatize these sorts of state-owned corporations. Our provincial governments here in Canada have been doing this for decades now - always resulting in worse outcomes for consumers

I’m starting to think the best model going forward would be collectively-owned non-profits (roughly like credit unions) but I’m not optimistic that most people would buy into this idea - certainly not enough to enable it’s use for services that constitute utilities. I know in the US a lot of attempts at municipal broadband have been curtailed by the big corps and their owned politicians, and those attempts had a local government behind them. The uphill battle that concerned citizens would face seems almost insurmountable if this were attempted in any way that would challenge a big corp’s profits.

Basically, everything is garbage and the world is getting objectively worse.

herrcaptain ,

That’s an interesting arrow placement. I zoomed in like crazy trying to find the damn wasp. If anyone else is a dummy like me, it’s right at the top of the case window.

herrcaptain ,

That makes a lot of sense.

herrcaptain ,

Is that with an Nvidia GPU? Apparently that can be problematic in its current state. Wayland on my AMD card has been basically flawless, but your mileage may vary.

herrcaptain ,

Yeah - after posting my comment I legit double checked that I was indeed running Wayland. I’ve heard so many people complain about its instability that I started to doubt myself. Sure enough, it’s Wayland and it’s been an amazing experience thus far. Daily use for work and browsing is basically flawless, and most games seem to run as good or better than they did under Windows 11.

herrcaptain ,

Very weird then! Oh well, I’m sure X11 will stick around long into when Wayland works on all systems.
