The heat on the underground is mad, makes it so hard to dress for the weather. Go out in a coat because it’s cold then get down on the central line and everyone is sweating hard

Sublime’s speed is the main thing that keeps me, it’s so smooth unless I’m editing 10k lines at once

Should I look for an alternative to firefox in Fedora?

I’ve been seeing a lot of information lately about mozilla, and a lot of questionable claims being made about their “direction.” The bulk of their revenue comes from google, and I have been working very hard to de-google everything I can. I have moved away from drive, gmail, search, etc....

Such a shame about ladybird, sounds very promising but opinions like that do real damage to the image of a project

christophski ,

As much as it seems that they shouldn’t, they do. Those people are leading and if they let their personal opinions hang over into their work, it matters. People will not want to contribute or be associated with people with those opinions and views and some people that would have been contributers will feel persecuted.

christophski ,

I guess that is the point, you are saying you don’t understand why it should be a problem, but other people do think it is a problem, thus there is a problem. You thinking it shouldn’t be a problem does not negate the problem. Problem.

christophski ,

The reason is that it is an opinion that incites hatred. In theory these things should not get in the way of innovation but in practice that is not how it works, people are people and we have feelings about things.

This is literally the first time I’ve heard it being mentioned since the exodus

Why Wayland adoption to have official support in programs is so slow? (wayland.freedesktop.org)

Wayland seems ready to me but the main problem that many programs are not configured / compiled to support it. Why is that? I know it’s not easy as “Wayland support? Yes” (but in many cases adding a flag is enough but maybe it’s not a perfect support). What am I missing? Even Blender says if it fails to use Wayland it...

I just used Virtualbox’s auto install feature yesterday and it was insane. Literally just put in name and password and iso and it did the rest.

christophski ,

What obsidian plugina do you use? I used the Google keep import but nothing else since theb

Need some more!

christophski ,

Never heard of this, what are some examples? Maybe caitlin? Just looked that up, it’s an Irish name.

christophski ,

But those are just names that already existed? I thought you meant like taking a name like Simon and making it Simonlin or Adam to Adamlin

christophski ,

It’s definitely slowed down, but that’s fine, let it grow naturally. Personally I sometimes get put off because I end up seeing the same posts repeated across different instances so it can be harder to find content, but I also love the smaller community.

christophski ,

Yeah that would make a huge difference

christophski ,

It is literally a zip file. If I remember correctly you have to write some xml which describes the layout of the skin and then include any images you need, you then zip it and change the file extension to wsz. So really you could put anything in a skin.

christophski ,

Does this protocol actually mean arbitrary cross-app messaging or would that require the app developers to coordinate in some way?

christophski ,

I doubt it will ever happen but it would be amazing if I could just have one messaging app and message whomever I want on whatever platform I wanted, without having to using some crazy bridges.

christophski ,

Hmm depends, were quite good as Head of Software Development for the United Kingdom?

I made a website that lets you use ranked choice voting in a mock UK General Election to explain how it works. (publicslate.co.uk)

I don’t know if this is too self-promotey to put in the more serious subs so I’m putting it here. I need to blag being able to do the django framework so I spent a week fannying about with it to make this. Feel free to mess about with it, give feedback or repost it on reddit or any other lemmy knock-offs.

christophski ,

I think by the time .UK was available, people were already totally used to .co.uk so it’s still a bit jarring to use the new one

christophski ,

Hahaha so true, do branded bourbons and custard creams even exist. And nice biscuits??

christophski ,

Using a mouse is great for some games like OpenTTD!

christophski ,

Can I ask what extensions you are using in gnome?

christophski ,

That’s interesting because of that list I’d only consider tray icons, the rest I would turn off

BackInTime turns on my monitors

I use BackInTime (which is basically a front end for rsync) for backups, and I run one every night at 1 AM. This is on Linux Mint Cinnamon. If the computer is locked/the monitors have gone to sleep (computer isn’t suspended), when the backup begins the monitors turn on, and will then stay on all night. I don’t want to waste...

christophski ,

It’d be best to create an issue on the backintime github

christophski ,

I’ve said this before, the thing I hate about reddit and discord is that you only get exposed to “current” threads or “top” threads. On old forums everything was just there and if someone commented on it, it came back to the top and re-ignited conversations.

I was a big user of the command and conquer forums and I definitely miss the community of it. But that may just be the scale of Internet then compared to now. Back then you saw the same users every day and we ended up chatting on msn and working on projects together. I couldn’t tell you any users on my instance or elsewhere other than the admins of my instance.

Apple’s constant anti-interoperability stance is the core reason I do not and will not own their products

Adobe to update vague AI terms after users threaten to cancel subscriptions (arstechnica.com)

Adobe has promised to update its terms of service to make it “abundantly clear” that the company will “never” train generative AI on creators’ content after days of customer backlash, with some saying they would cancel Adobe subscriptions over its vague terms....

christophski ,

And the best part is that there will be no consequences! :)

christophski ,

You are going to need to ask her specifically what software she uses and find out if it can run on Linux. If it can’t then she is not going to use the computer. Graphic design is not a profession where you can just easily switch software and trying to convince someone else they should do that is going to be even less likely.

christophski ,

Same here, my reddit account is 15 years old

christophski ,

Command and conquer, OpenTTD and OpenRCT2. Also Linux audio production

christophski ,

This was very normal. With one of our first Internet connections, our ISP gave us 20mb or so of webspace but no way to have a dB so you would just host raw html.

christophski ,

This is very very cool, I’ve been looking for a good way to do this with Linux and this has lowered the barrier to entry significantly

christophski OP ,

As someone that prefers the repo method to the all-in-one package method, Arch is becoming more and more appealing

christophski OP ,

Yeah I was referring to repos generally but I come from Ubuntu so PPA is the term I used incorrectly

christophski ,

This is super old but seems to be making the rounds again, received it on WhatsApp twice in the past few days - what causes something to come back like that?

christophski ,

Yeah I think the idea is they sound more “accurate” as “better” is a subjective term. I do this too, I love them.

christophski ,

Ofcom basically washed their hands of informing people about this, so no-one knew about it anyway. When the analog TV switch off happened, there were adverts everywhere but not for this even though I would argue this is an exceptionally bigger deal
