Rentlar ,

I’ve been playing Civ 6, with and without the mods. Custom Leaders and many combinations of mods tend to make the game desync after 100 turns on quick speed, but I enjoy it.

I’ve enjoyed civ 5 too but just haven’t played as much I guess. The DLC being so numerous, my rating of Civ 6 against 5 would depend on which “edition” you have. It bugs me that it doesn’t show which civs you didn’t own don’t appear until after you select them in the menu.

Media

There is a new functionality for users to list all images they have previously uploaded, and delete them if desired. It also allows admins to view and delete images hosted on the local instance.

When uploading a new avatar or banner, the old one is automatically deleted.

Instance admins should also checkout lemmy-thumbnail-cleaner which can delete thumbnails for old posts, and free significant amounts of storage.

This is great news, and addresses what was until now a big shortcoming… a user had no way of managing uploaded images and admins had to crawl through the DB to manage or delete them.

An interesting scifi plot could be where said fungi start hungering for the microplastics within us…

It’s the GUI software manager, I think the LM developers should get a pass at curating selections for users who wouldn’t know any better.

I personally think they can make it a total non-issue if they put in “some unverified results hidden, see settings to change”.

Biden’s going to need everyone’s help. Turn the Senate and the House super Blue. Even if you hate Biden because of Israeli support, vote for your Rep and Senator that can deal with this corruption. Add to the bench until the traitors Thomas and Alito become irrelevant. Revise the number of Senate and House seats.

New Louisiana law will criminalize approaching police under certain circumstances (apnews.com)

Critics of a new Louisiana law, which makes it a crime to approach within 25 feet (7.6 meters) of a police officer under certain circumstances, fear that the measure could hinder the public’s ability to film officers — a tool that has increasingly been used to hold police accountable....

Rentlar ,

If this is allowed to stand, Americans’ first amendment rights end at 25 ft away from a police officer, in Louisiana.

The Lemmy.ca survey in the new year showed similar observations.

Not sure if it’s just the thread format (perhaps mastodon and misskey have a less skewed share), the fact it’s an anonymous platform, or the other factors you talked about.

How to get more diversity? Idk tbh, definitely we should ask people from minority groups for more ideas.

Only thing I can think of: certain communities could transplant themselves over that discuss topics that you don’t currently see much around here that would draw broader interest from other groups.

Ticketmaster has struggled with benefited from bad actors online using bots and other methods to disrupt the ticketing service and scoop up tickets to resell. The company also has a history of being the bad actor itself when it comes to electronic data.

Fixed that for the author.

Atlanta police surveil people opposing ‘Cop City’: ‘There’s this constant stalking feeling’ (www.theguardian.com)

Atlanta police have been carrying out around-the-clock surveillance in several neighborhoods for months, on people and houses linked to opposition against the police training center colloquially known as “Cop City”....

Rentlar ,

He opened the door to see a lit road flare catching fire to the wooden railing next to steps leading to the house’s wooden porch. He ran into the house, filled a bucket with water and doused the flames. It is unclear who left the flare on the porch.

“I’m already paranoid,” he said. “But there’s a difference between police surveillance and trying to burn your house down.” A lawyer recommended filing a police report. “But what if it’s a state actor? Who protects us then?”

Does Atlanta or Georgia have an ombudsman to report to? These intimidation tactics have to be curbed by an outside order.

Uh so I suppose the Israel is tragically accidenting its way through Rafah then?

The USA is probably wanting Israel to see the tragic accident campaign in Gaza to completion.

Everywhere I am there is a guy running a leaf blower. At my house, leaf blowers everywhere all day long. At work, of course, leaf blowers blowing dirt and allergens into the air. It’s such a special noise, it goes through walls and headphones so effectively. They are the most pervasive, annoying things on the planet. I hate...

Quick thing is that inflation is not a problem when wages catch up. During the pandemic, prices went up but wages stagnated. Now wages are keeping up with inflation but are consistently running behind the still increasing cost of other stuff. That gap is what’s making life difficult for people.

That is correct! Thanks for responding for me so succinctly.

Linus Tech Tips (LTT) release investigation results on former accusations (x.com)

There were a series of accusations about our company last August from a former employee. Immediately following these accusations, LMG hired Roper Greyell - a large Vancouver-based law firm specializing in labor and employment law, to conduct a third-party investigation. Their website describes them as “one of the largest...

    Rentlar ,

I think part of it was the stress of the grindset that Linus running the show was getting all the staff into. Pushing out content at a regular schedule, getting sponsorships and all of that.

The whole GN saga with data accuracy and the donated cooler that made LMG look inward for a bit and improve their process was for the best I think.

The investigation to me is just one element making sure LMG weren’t getting off on the wrong foot.

I think the complainant wasn’t wrong or defamatory at all to bring up concerns because even in LTT’s channel there was a video where the front and center stars of the team comment on how stressful things can be. When there’s an implicit hierarchy imbalance (Linus can say “we’re all equals here” all he wants) but fact is there’s a leadership structure in one way or another, which can cause one to take certain treatment in different ways.

The fact is is that all 3 console manufacturers charge monthly subscriptions for you to play games you bought with anyone outside of your room. (Nintendo Switch Online, Playstation Plus, Xbox Live).

Guess how much I have to pay Steam every month to play games in my $3000 library with my friends across the country? (A: nothing!)

Though the defense got a nugget of being able to convincingly call Cohen a thief, they really gave the prosecution the last laugh with their own witness. If the trial was closing right after the prosecution witnesses’ cross examination then I would think some on the jury may be impressioned with the idea that Trump could be innocent.

Maybe Lumpy Pillow Lindell would have been an even “better” choice to testify if he was relevant at all to the case.

    Rentlar ,

There’s no such thing as an honest mistake with Trump (well honest anything for that matter).

Nonetheless, you can be found guilty of murder if you hire a hitman to kill someone, even if you didn’t know the wording of the statute of how murder is made illegal, and you weren’t involved with how the murder proceeded.

So the idea for the prosecution is to prove that Trump asked Cohen to do the dirty work to broker the hush payment, then find some way to cover it up to improve his chances for election.

That’s the main link that needs to be shown, and Rob Costello’s response that he was involved to help the Trump campaign was a free layup for the prosecution when they might have been on the backfoot at the end of Cohen’s cross-examination.

At closing arguments next Tuesday you will get a synopsis of how the prosecution argues Trump is tied into all this.

    Rentlar ,

You may want to read the indictment and statement of facts to show what the prosecution is trying to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. A portion of the statement of facts in the indictment is below:

    1. The defendant DONALD J. TRUMP repeatedly and fraudulently falsified New York business records to conceal criminal conduct that hid damaging information from the voting public during the 2016 presidential election.
    2. From August 2015 to December 2017, the Defendant orchestrated a scheme with others to influence the 2016 presidential election by identifying and purchasing negative information about him to suppress its publication and benefit the Defendant’s electoral prospects. In order to execute the unlawful scheme, the participants violated election laws and made and caused false entries in the business records of various entities in New York. The participants also took steps that mischaracterized, for tax purposes, the true nature of the payments made in furtherance of the scheme.
    3. One component of this scheme was that, at the Defendant’s request, a lawyer who then worked for the Trump Organization as Special Counsel to Defendant (“Lawyer A”), covertly paid $130,000 to an adult film actress shortly before the election to prevent her from publicizing a sexual encounter with the Defendant. Lawyer A made the $130,000 payment through a shell corporation he set up and funded at a bank in Manhattan. This payment was illegal, and Lawyer A has since pleaded guilty to making an illegal campaign contribution and 2 served time in prison. Further, false entries were made in New York business records to effectuate this payment, separate and apart from the New York business records used to conceal the payment.
    4. After the election, the Defendant reimbursed Lawyer A for the illegal payment through a series of monthly checks, first from the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust (the “Defendant’s Trust”)—a Trust created under the laws of New York which held the Trump Organization entity assets after the Defendant was elected President—and then from the Defendant’s bank account. Each check was processed by the Trump Organization, and each check was disguised as a payment for legal services rendered in a given month of 2017 pursuant to a retainer agreement. The payment records, kept and maintained by the Trump Organization, were false New York business records. In truth, there was no retainer agreement, and Lawyer A was not being paid for legal services rendered in 2017. The Defendant caused his entities’ business records to be falsified to disguise his and others’ criminal conduct.

Remember that it can be any crime that Trump was intending to have covered up through the falsified business records. So in this case it’s a campaign finance/election laws related to hiding damaging information from the public.

Speculation here, I wonder if the ditch lights and general light placement that is different than a normal car confused the self driving module into thinking it’s on the wrong side of the road…?

trains as a long string of semi-trucks

So many long distance delivery trucks take the same route across the country. Why don’t we just string them all together, then have one big-ass truck engine in the front pulling it all? And to save on how big the motor needs to be, we’ll have steel on steel contact to reduce friction. Whoops, you’ve got a train all of a sudden. 😅

flashing red lights treated like a stop sign

Seems kind of dangerous to treat as a rule. Not just at railroad crossing but a stopped car with hazards on or a firetruck might confuse the self driving module…

It could have been £300 and you will still complain and be the sucker for paying for that. Is the seller obligated to ship to you at a price of £2?

You could probably shop around a bunch of Oxfams to (maybe) get the book you wanted for cheap. Or you could also find discounted books at the Oxfam and list them for just £1 or 2 above the sticker price. Is that worth your time?

Books on the other hand are a luxury item that (other than the textbook racket by publishers) you can go without.

    nypost.com/…/hamas-official-vows-to-repeat-israel…

People in Hamas leadership positions like Ghazi Hamad from this article, who can talk a big talk from the safety of outside Palestine and ignore their people’s suffering.

I don’t give a rats’ ass about Israel’s lies and deception calling everyone and anyone that disagrees with their genocidal tactics as a Hamas sympathizer. Yeah and I’m of the stance that Israeli has had no business being in there for months and are actively commiting genocide, killing a massive excess of civilians and disrupting humanitarian aid.

But make no mistake, just like there are hardcore religious evangelicals in the US there are emboldened religious warmongerers in Palestine who are equally blind to Palestinian suffering for a higher cause as the Israeli extremist government is.

    Rentlar ,

You wanted names of someone spouting violent rhetoric on the Palestinian side, I gave you one. Has nothing to do with UNWRA, World Kitchen, MSF or journalists. All reasons and justification are set aside.

Many did protest the disproportionate response to 9/11, and Americans still face many repercussions today in the privacy of their daily lives.

I agree with you on what you’re saying. In my eyes the Israeli military’s actions are very, very far from justifiable at this point in time. I’ll remind you that it has been 8 months from when I wrote the original comment in October, before the WCK event in April, UNRWA defunding in January and several bombings of refugee camps between November and May. I don’t see a reason to continue to have an argument over this.
