Thanks for trying to bring an alternative perspective to the table.

Neither argument is very compelling. A) is like “if I can’t have nice things, no one can”, and think about those arguments against loan forgiveness or healthcare. B) is wishful thinking game companies will charge what people are willing to pay no matter how many copies are sold. And unlike physical goods, the cost per digital license doesn’t really much if more copies are sold so expected sales volume doesn’t affect costs much in that sense. Piracy itself also doesn’t incur any cost (other than mythical lost sales), while Denuvo and other anti circumvention technology does.

Foreign journalists are banned from entering Gaza, and Al Jazeera staff there have been some of the only reporters on the ground.

For years, Israeli officials have accused the network of anti-Israeli bias.

They should let some outside reporters into the region to put out some unbiased assessments of the situation.

The revelation of Israel’s use of US weaponry in an unlawful attack comes as the US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, is set to deliver a report to Congress on 8 May on whether he finds credible Israel’s assurances that its use of US weapons do not violate US or international Law.

I mean $107 million in Steam sales within 2 months is something worth it for Sony to put up with a whiny playerbase. If there’s something I know Sony likes, it’s more money. I doubt they will pass up the opportunity to collect money from PC gamers, and digging their heels letting players develop grudges against them were going to hurt Sony’s future sales figures all around than what they would have benefited from PSN integration.

Error when loading Ubuntu live USB (lemmy.world)

I’ve been trying to boot a Ubuntu 24.04 USB (please no discussion of distro choice) but I keep getting a very unhelpful error during the initial startup. I’ve tried using a different USB drive, a different USB port, booting from UEFI. The only thing that has made a change was booting into safe graphics mode. It got to the...

If there’s an installer bug, probably not much you can do at the current moment, but the advice is for anyone trying to get any install working in general:

It would be good to have basic information about your system like model of graphics card, CPU, amount of RAM and motherboard. How long have you had the PC with it working?

Software things to check:

  • what do dmesg and /var/log say? (ETA: at the part you are at in the distro idk if you can access the graphical terminal, the virtual tty. You can try the debug mode root shell if they have that with the live disk) Anything that stands out as major error categories?
  • How did you set up the USB drive? Dd? Ventoy? Rufus? I’ve helped someone install Ubuntu 22.04 recently, for some reason they had a lot of trouble getting it with multiple USBs but this old USB I had worked perfectly first try.

Hardware things to troubleshoot:

  • (For new builds) did you plug in the correct PSU cables, all the VGA/PCIe 6+2 pins for graphics and 8pin CPUs? If you don’t have all of them in you may run into more instability.
  • Does htop or system monitor or BIOS show all of the RAM installed? If some are missing you may need to clean and reseat it, or replace it if deemed defective.
  • NVMe or SATA III disk? Are both cables plugged in properly for SATA?
  • Activate the smoke bomb somewhere well-ventilated (by that I mean dust out your PC)

Those types of things would be a good starting point.

I know the FOSS fans within our community don’t like the terms of Grayjay. That said we have options like NewPipe, ytdlp, nvidious, Libretube, etc. which are FOSS and AFAIK each have different extraction mechanisms, so one change on the page end can’t reliably shut down every method. I get that Louis is against Sponsorblock and his personal feelings and morals influence the direction of the software too.

The Grayjay app is a bit more like Shareware, Louis himself described his app’s monetization scheme like an infinite free trial. He knows many people are going to use it for free. He knows that others will pay the one time payment for a license, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be linked to the install or anything.

The thing is that diversity in the space makes us stronger in the face of the gigantic monolith that Google is. His repair foundation or whatever that was means that he has a few more resources pooled together than the rest of us to put up a legal fight that in the end will hopefully effect change that helps all of us.

I wasn’t ecstatic about GG nPlayProtect either (though the fact that it runs in Linux userspace makes it okay for me). I don’t think people would be outraged as much if PSN account was always enforced or the timelines for how long one could “skip” the integration was made clear in game and in community announcements.

The issue I think is that Sony and Arrowhead are making it users’ fault for their arbitrary change for not reading the fine print, yet they are selling it in places that wouldn’t legally be able to access it after the enforced mandate.

I think similar hell would be raised if GG nPlayProtect or some other anticheat had a malfunction so it was disabled for sometime post launch, then later enforced and again blaming the players for not knowing better.

It doesn’t seem like a big change to me, so long as you can just have it linked to your Steam account and nothing else.

I’d mostly be upset if it breaks Linux compatibility or was a single player game (HD2 isn’t).

This is the point of contention I am curious about. If Sony can be the one to kick you off the game that you bought on Steam and you don’t get refunded for it, I will review it negatively. Let me know what happens after the update forcing PSN.

I think those people that will no longer be able to play it, because Sony doesn’t let them do the thing that they now require, deserve refunds. I will leave a negative review when the update drops if they don’t, despite really enjoying this game, because it’s not fair to those who bought it and will be locked out. If they can make it such that you can have a placeholder Sony account that can’t access all PSN features, for the sole purpose to play this and other Sony games on Steam, that anyone in the world can access, that would be an acceptable compromise to me.

I understand EULA and account creation fatigue. It’s just that it’s not the accounts themselves that are the worrisome part of the change for me is what I’m saying. If it’s for specific reasoning (console crossplay), is unobtrusive, and maintains access for existing Steam purchasers then I don’t have a real problem. If they use it to limit people’s access that’s where I have a problem.

I was honestly not too personally bothered at first, since the change might not affect me. Still, when I found out others might be screwed by Sony when PSN is enforced, I stand in solidarity with them.

I am not an audio person, so do not have much idea about technical terms - but I hear the words “bass” and “treble” almost everywhere now, especially in the equalizer app that came with a new bluetooth earbuds that I bought (yes, I am still very much a wired-earbud guy, just dipping my toes in the wireless earbud ocean)....

Bass is for low frequency sounds, so use that if you want to hear the kick drums, the bass guitar, trombone etc more clearly and you want a deep and mellow sound. Mid for human voices and most lead instruments. Treble if you want other drums and cymbals to stand out and you want a brighter but slightly shallower sound.

UCLA CRACKDOWN CAME DAY AFTER VIOLENT CLASH

UCLA had canceled classes for the day on Wednesday following a violent clash between the encampment’s occupants and a group of masked counter-demonstrators who mounted a surprise assault late Tuesday night on the tent city.

The occupants of the camp, set up last week, had remained mostly peaceful before the melee, in which both sides traded blows and doused each other with pepper spray.

It’s an excellent analogue to what’s going on in West Bank and Gaza. Violent Israeli settlers attack a peaceful Palestian camp, there is resistance to the aggression, then the big guns arrive to defend the Israelis and do the rest of the work to raid, displace, arrest and/or kill the Palestinian side.

Every fucking engineer and inspector that got burned by this dangerous criminal 90 day whistleblower process had better be writing a will and talking to a lawyer right now. If it can’t be fixed now I don’t know how it will ever. It had always struck me as funny that the FAA has Boeing inspect and okay their own planes, that is the first thing that needs to change.

It’s the first and primary duty of being an aviation engineer, the duty to the public (or in simple terms, to not have planes fall out of the sky). The systemic, criminal, and wilful negligence in management that has let things get this bad has to be rectified, before more people get hurt. Management needs major reprisals for firing and punishing engineers who did their job correctly.

Yeah. I want students, faculty everywhere to bring that energy to fight for every cause be it veganism, class struggle, labour, etc.

The main thing though is that people can’t lose sight of the goal. The police response to campus protests brings to the forefront the lopsided treatment of any dissent toward the genocide, no matter how peaceful the dissent is. It brings to national attention that these protests aren’t anti-Semitic in the slightest, yet they are repeatedly characterized as violent terrorism.

Just like in class solidarity, some detractors are purposefully trying to unfocus the narrative by saying “well how about this cause? Don’tcha care about that?” They do this since dividing and conquering is a powerful method to steal power from the masses. Don’t fall for it. Keep the target on de-funding the army that is commiting the Gaza genocide.

Back in the day I was drifting in Mario Kart DS on the Dpad until my thumbs hurt before the Wii version (with Nunchuk) and later.

The switch was fine, of course in handheld mode its inferior to the larger/heavier, newer and more ergonomically designed Steam Deck. These days at my friends house I bring a Pro controller around which works and feels just fine.

Oh and yeah the best Switch gaming experience is via emulation of the games you own and using nicer controllers.

I’ve been really disgusted by this repeated gaslighting and abuser-kind of rhetoric coming from the US Department of State.

Stuff that has the air of: Agreeing to this (not exactly a ceasefire deal) is the only thing between you and a ceasefire, despite the fact that the US has continually blocked ceasefire motions for 6 months.

Still, anything that can move toward an end of hostilities can be good.

Governments are underfunding education, and in Canada there’s pressure to limit international students who pay big bucks to study here, so there’s a bit of talk of austerity at many public universities in Canada.

When you combine it with the profit incentive of private universities and their administration acting like CEOs, and all the contracting out that was done by both public and private that are now screwing them over, paints an awful picture for education in North America.
