This week's #MythologyMonday theme is tricksters! #Anansi is a is a trickster character from Ghanaian #folklore, most commonly depicted as a spider. Nyame, Anansi's father & god of the sky, asked him to bring wisdom to humans in a big calabash pot. Anansi took it to earth but decided to hide it in a tall tree no human could climb to keep it all to himself. But he had much difficulty getting the heavy pot up the tree. Anansi's young son saw his father's struggles and said:
@mythology “Father, if you tie the pot to your back, it will be much easier for you to climb!” #Anansi followed the advice and reached the top of the tree easily. But looking down he thought: "I have all the wisdom in the world, yet a little boy had more common sense than I did." He threw the calabash to the ground, where it smashed into countless pieces.
Humans found bits of the wisdom and took them home to their families. That is why we have to share wisdom with each other. #MythologyMonday

Just when you thought #JapaneseFolklore couldn't get any weirder, I present you with ringo no kai. This #yokai is the spirit of apple trees whose fruit has been left too long without being picked. They appear in the evening near apple orchards, taking human form. Bizarrely, they ask residents to feed them poo which, if provided, is eaten with relish. The real low point follows, when ringo no kai presents its own excrement and demands that it be eaten by the residents in... #MythologyMonday

This week's #MythologyMonday theme is mirrors. #Aphrodite is often depicted with a mirror, so much so that a stylised mirror became the symbol of the planet #Venus and of the element copper in #alchemy. Copper is associated with Aphrodite through the island of #Cyprus, one of her major cult centres where she is said to have first stepped foot after her birth in the sea. Cyprus was famous in antiquity for its copper ore deposits.
Hephaistos (the personification of fire) arrives on #Lemnos from the sky, as it would through a burning mirror. He is weak, within an inch of his life, but the people of Lemnos care for him and kindle the weak little flame until it grows strong enough to craft the most beautiful things.
