You got hit by the post jammer

My old boss’s phone would echo back at you when you’d try to talk. Reeeeally fun trying to explain a fuckup over the phone with him.

Just don’t listen when you talk. That will also stop them from stopping you.

No, it can’t. It can disturb the speech of some people.

A bit akin to those “drunk glasses” or something. No, they don’t actually make you drunk, and this doesn’t actually prevent you from speaking. It’s just a matter of getting used to slightly weird thing.

When I worked in taxi dispatch I *had" to get used to this because the phone lines would pretty often just have the maon features of this “gun” as a fault of some sort.

It’s weird hearing your voice with a tiny delay, but you get used to it.

Edit also it’s like 15 years old

itsralC ,

This thing makes it so you can’t hear yourself, though. So it has that added difficulty.

The whole country of japan invented this? That must have been a huge group project

I bet it is like highschool where one guy did all the work and everyone else took credit...

or having a job.

Rentlar ,

If my memory serves correctly, this is the thing that basically plays everything you say back to you with a 200ms delay that instantly makes you feel awkward.

Oh god. If I hear myself through people’s speakers when on a call I cannot continue. It’s super effective at making me confused and distracted. That’s awful.

Yeah, I'm guessing it was that, which won an IgNobel prize like a decade ago.

If you've ever worked in a call center, this kind of thing happens from time to time. After a couple times you learn to ignore it and push through.

BubbleMonkey ,

Whenever I run into that problem I just pull the earpiece away from my ear when I’m talking. I can still kind of hear it, but it’s much easier to ignore.

milicent_bystandr ,

I remember seeing this effect on QI. They tried it on Alan first and he just powered through and managed to keep talking!

Akasazh ,

Alan is a very special individual, though.

milicent_bystandr ,

He is.
