I wish those little PCs would make a comeback.

But smartphones have changed that, largely.

There is a desire to go back to dumb flip phones, though, and I wonder if that could help bring small form factor PCs back.

Okalaydokalay ,

I’m in the same boat. I used that money and saved a bit more and just built my first gaming PC.

I still want to play Ghost of Tsushima but I will not buy a PS5 just for that game. Don’t think I’m going to buy any more consoles in the future, sadly. The last release soured me on these releases too.

Okalaydokalay ,

It’s not just the lack of availability but that was a part of it. Microsoft and Sony’s lack of proper response is part of the reason.

I remained “patient” to some extent as I only just got to build my PC this year. The GPU “shortage” was a part of it too.

But I felt that Sony and Microsoft could have done more for customers. Sony had a program to get actual PS users a PS5 but that too was still sold out. Scalpers had no issue buying pallets of consoles but actual fans couldn’t. It was insane.

But besides that, I’ve since realized that, at least for myself, a PC is the better way to go. Consoles are a waste of money for me in the long run as a PC will be used for more than just gaming and the longevity of the parts and upgradeability is incomparable. I likely wouldn’t have felt this way had I just been able to get a PS5/Xbox Series X like I wanted.

But Microsoft and Sony don’t seem to care about their actual fans and them getting consoles in their homes, which is what soured it for me. Though, yeah, same could be said about Nvidia and AMD as well to an extent too, but there are more manufacturers under them that make the actual cards and you had some like EVGA that had programs that tried to get a GPU in actual customers’ hands and not the greedy scalpers.

Okalaydokalay ,

Was just reminded on here a few days about Jet Set Radio Future.

The graphics aren’t realistic so it still feels good despite being released 20 years ago. The music and overall gameplay is also fantastic and original.

It somewhat got a “remaster” as a spiritual successor this past summer as Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. With added “vehicles” and HD which makes it a bit more crisp in detail.

John Riccitiello is stepping down as CEO and president of Unity (investors.unity.com)

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Unity (NYSE: U) (the “Company”), the world’s leading platform for creating and growing real-time 3D (RT3D) content, today announced that John Riccitiello will retire as President, Chief Executive Officer, Chairman and a member of the Company’s Board of Directors, effective immediately....

Okalaydokalay ,

True, at the end of the day, he did irreversible damage to Unity’s image with this move.

In his defense, he likely wasn’t alone in making this decision or approving of it, so there’s that.

Okalaydokalay ,

Did they really encourage it? Genuinely curious as I never heard that before, but that’s wild if true.

Okalaydokalay ,

Addressed an issue that could cause V to become invulnerable to all damage.

I don’t know if I’d call that an “issue”

Okalaydokalay ,

I’m surprised advertisers don’t have much of a problem with it. Because it just makes me fucking despise whatever website I was tricked into going to.

It would be like a sandwich shop hiring a guy to wear a sandwich costume and pass out flyers on their corner. Only, instead of just doing that, he forces you into the sandwich shop. Guaranteed I would be pissed and hate that place for life.

Okalaydokalay ,

I always thought the holding your head back for a nosebleed was weird. I’d have that awful taste/internal smell of blood in my throat and the occasional gulp of blood clump 🤮

Plus it never seemed to stop it any better than when I’d just hold a tissue to my nose.

Okalaydokalay ,

I loved messing with these people.

“Oh that 3 year old car for $2,200? I’d love to buy it! What’s that? You have to ship it from Michigan? What a coincidence! My brother lives in Michigan! He can go pick it up and save us both the time and costs of shipping :) What’s that? It’s locked up in a storage lot? Oh that’s no trouble at all. I’ll have my brother go down there and pressure them to let it go :)”

Just one excuse after another until they’d eventually stop replying. About the only way I could get some fun out of the frustration when just trying to browse for a decent car.

Okalaydokalay ,

I would love to see this just to see the absolute chaos it would cause. I cannot visualize it.

My boss has a morning meeting where we tell him what we’re working on for the day. And every Monday, this meeting is at 8:00 when my shift starts. I’m thankful my name makes me further down the list because I would be stumbling to get that.

He’s a cool guy and not overly micromanager or anything, so it’s not a huge thing, but just reminded me seeing this meme.

Okalaydokalay ,

I really miss the days when the music was relevant. If you watched a Papa Roach music video, there were other Papa Roach videos being suggested. Now, it doesn’t even suggest music in the same genre. It just recommends music I’ve already seen like Tupac or really out there genres like a pop music video I’ve never watched. Not relevant to my taste or the video itself, but nice try, YouTube…?

It’s been a few years, but at my old job, there was this woman who came to do a training for us at our job. When all was said and done, I went to thank her personally for coming to do the training for us.

Can’t remember how, but we found out that she was 92 years old!! Not lying, she looked early 60’s at most! Me and the few people who stuck around were shocked and amazed and asked her questions.

She told us that she was currently retired but she still loved the field so she would do trainings for a little pay here and there. She told us that she was a nurse in World War II. She didn’t go into too much detail but that was really awesome to meet someone in person who could say that. Not every day you meet someone from that time period or directly experienced the war, especially as an adult, no less.

I asked her her “secret” to getting to her incredible age. She said she hadn’t had an alcoholic drink since she was 22 years old.

I’ll never forget that woman. I always think of her when I see alcohol and contemplate my life, to be truthful.

Okalaydokalay ,

I agree. I have a drink here and there on the weekends sometimes, but the normalization of getting hammered, blackout drunk is unhealthy. I’ve always thought it was “funny”, for lack of a better term, when online dating and seeing people who have a problem with people who do drugs, even marijuana or smoking cigarettes but their own profile is filled of pics of them with booze and their profile is jokes about getting drunk and alcohol being their personality.

A little examination on this would benefit society.

Okalaydokalay ,

I wish I would have asked! We’re in the United States but she didn’t have a noticeable accent.

Crazy how people at that age still want to work!

Finally had enough of Windows. I'm packing up. I'm nervous!

Edit2: Writing this from Pop_Os! I had experience with Mint for my Self hosting rig and wanted to see other pastures. Decided to rearrange my three drives, two of them are still Windows, another I emptied and dedicated to Pop OS. That way I still have easy fallback to Windows if I need to do something fast and then I’ll know...

Okalaydokalay ,

You should “distro hop” when you make a decision like this.

This is similar to having a Chevy truck and getting tired of all the problems it has had over its time with you. So you decide to look into Dodge, Ford, Toyota, etc. Of course no one wants to “hop” from vehicle to vehicle; you want to find the right truck for you now! But that’s unrealistic and your best bet is to go to different dealers, look at the different trucks, and take them for test drives.

You should be doing the same to figure out what you like, what you need, and what you want in a distro. Since 99% of them are free, install them and boot them up. Go for live installs on a USB first to give each one a try without having to go through the installation to your machine. But do know that some times, you may experience different results on live USB vs install on SSD. I experienced this with Zorin and its Nvidia drivers that allowed dual screens on live USB but didn’t when installed and I never got it set up correctly.

You’ll get a lot of recommendations here and you should take them into account and the pros that people suggest and see if they fit your specific needs/wants in an OS.

Despite what I said about my experience with Zorin, it was a pretty nice setup and a good one for someone that wants that Windows feel still but without the added Microsoft bullshit. My display issues seem to be a rarity and even despite that, I enjoyed it and have it currently installed to a Chromebook I have for any little Linux needs I need from time to time on the go.

Okalaydokalay ,

My cousin apparently looked like Chris Brown when we were younger (before the whole Rihanna beating stuff) but I never saw the resemblance.

But we went to a Game Crazy (now you know how long ago it was) and I remember some girls pointing at him and giggling saying “look it’s Chris Brown! Who’s that next to him though?”

It’s absolutely bonkers for Microsoft to even consider that paying $99 or $199 for their ad ridden software is fair and reasonable. If you’re going to bombard me with ads, the shit better be free. You can’t have it both ways. Ads are riddled in the OS whether it be in the Start Menu, notifications area, File Explorer, Microsoft Edge, and even other paid products like Microsoft Office.

It’s so fucking frustrating seeing shit like Candy Crush being forcefully installed onto a system you paid for, especially when it’s supposed to be the “Pro/Enterprise” tier. Windows is a fucking joke and they deserved to have people using this exploit to get “free” activated copies of their OS.

Hopefully this is just another thing that pushes people to other OSes, whether that be Linux or macOS. Just get the hell away from Microsoft and take some of that monopoly power from under them little by little.

Okalaydokalay ,

Yeah, maybe my phrasing should have been “you should not be able to have it both ways”.

Okalaydokalay ,

Borderlands is another good example of this. Cartoony but fun gunplay and fun dialogue made the games (mostly) good.

I think games in that sort of style that don’t aim for realism typically have the best long term play. Jet Set Radio is another series with that sort of non-realism style and has aged fantastically.

Okalaydokalay ,

I have some flowers that have done this every year in a pile of rocks I have in my backyard. Every rainy season, they spring up right in the center of those rocks and they are some of the most beautiful flowers I’ve ever seen. It’s always sad to see them go when the rainy season ends.

At my last job, I worked a few different roles working with adults with developmental disabilities, some with extreme behavior problems. I have lots of stories to share.

One such one was a time when someone ran into my office and was telling me about one of our clients getting stabbed. We followed protocol, separated them, provided aid, called cops, etc.

The way I was told it happened was that the two of them got into an argument over basketball. Then one of them grabs a pencil and fucking stabs the other in the thigh with the pencil.

I remember the cops rolling up and one cop had a shotgun and cocked it as he walked into our gates. It really wasn’t that serious. We got it all under control right after it happened.

I’ve been punched, kicked, and even spit on there. I was also sexually assaulted on numerous times by an older skinny guy. I don’t think he was gay, I think he knew I couldn’t do anything about it and got his kicks off that. He’d grab my butt and tried grabbing my groin over top of my pants sometimes.

I do not miss that fucker one bit.

On a more positive note, I remember some of the more happier times I had. I used to take the guys around the city and lots of places they had never gone before. I wasn’t supposed to, but I didn’t care as long as I was doing stuff they enjoyed and made them enjoy their 8 hours with us. That’s all that mattered to me. One of the guys still asks about me to this day, and I haven’t worked with him in over 10 years. But he was really shy when he first came to the program and we welcomed him in our crew and made sure he always felt apart of everything we did. The other guys took note and even defended him on some occasions when someone would make fun of him. That’s probably my highlight of working there.

Okalaydokalay ,

The agency that oversaw our operations was overly lenient towards them and their behaviors. Their usual go-to was “that behavior is why they’re in your program”.

It was really shitty sometimes the way they just let things slide. And we got paid for each of them being in our program, so higher ups didn’t always want to let go of unruly clients, especially those with really bad behaviors because we’d be paid more to keep them in the program because of those outrageous behaviors.

The most we could do was separate him from me. I couldn’t even suspend him. But I think the bigger thing was him knowing I could never lay a finger on him for the way he would try to touch me. If he had grabbed my groin and I smacked his hand away, I would be the one who would get in trouble. He would just keep going and they would add it to his list of behaviors to work on.

Some clients even had made up stories of abuse and that was enough to let someone go. The only thing that would save the caretaker is if the client had had a history of making similar fabrications and/or the allegation could be proven false like video evidence or something. I remember people being fired purely for accusations that couldn’t be proven or disproven and the person crying innocence. It’s a really shitty thing to happen. You kind of understand and sympathize with the decision, knowing that you don’t want an actual abuser in your midst, but also realizing that some of these people in our care do lie and you’re taking away someone’s ability to feed their family strictly based on hearsay. You’d think people would find better ways of dealing with these situations, but it felt more like they preferred taking the easy route of just terminating someone and being done with the situation.

I can remember another time when a client had accused us of not feeding her. Despite 4 other clients living in the same home and none of them making similar complaints, the overseeing agency sent someone down to investigate. And the woman they sent to investigate had a personal vendetta against me for some reason, always out to get me and I have no idea why. So she opens the refrigerator and freezer and sees it filled with food but writes in her report that the lying client was correct in her accusation. That led to a meeting with one of the executives in the agency overseeing us calling me a liar in front of everyone in the meeting. Someone had taken a picture of the refrigerator but didn’t send me the picture in time so I could use it in defense of myself, so I sat there listening to them berate me about a false accusation. Before this, I had developed a really high reputation in the agency and lots of people knew me as someone who worked hard and treated the clients well and with respect. Now my name had been drug through the mud because of one false accusation.

I was miserable at the end of working there and was eternally glad to be able to escape it all. That agency being a big reason for a lot of the issues I experienced.

Well Plex does offer some content too. I was able to watch Sister Sister and some other shows that are not on my server but offered by them.

I have a Plex Pass I pay for monthly, but not sure if that’s the reason I could or if it’s free to anyone with a Plex account.

Okalaydokalay ,

This so much. I have so many users who include a screenshot and cut off parts of the screen. Sometimes the time is relevant, sometimes the URL is relevant, sometimes the web browser is relevant. I get if you have confidential stuff, you can block that out, but leave everything else in.

Okalaydokalay ,

It’s a little easier when the machine is dedicated to that and only that. The OS doesn’t have all this extra crap running in the background that takes resources from the game because it was designed for that in mind.

That and devs have just one machine to design their game for versus trying to make their game run on hundreds of machines with very different specs.

Some devs, especially first party devs who work closely with or directly for the manufacturer also have insider knowledge of the system they’re developing the game for. The Crash developers did this in the PlayStation 1 era by tapping into resources that other games weren’t using to push out even more performance from the hardware.

No longer being able to access Apollo. Had that been allowed (and no extra fees for using it), I would have kept browsing Reddit. Hell, I wouldn’t have minded some ads in Apollo if that meant keeping it.

But damn using that garbage official app. I tried it once again and it’s garbage. I tried it once before when Alien Blue stopped being viable and didn’t go back when I tried Apollo.

Okalaydokalay ,

I updated today and noticed this as well. What came after were some EULAs to agree to so I’m guessing they add one extra one for those who mark yes on this prompt.

And they rename shit all the time, so they probably are the same thing and some department just never got the memo to rebrand.

Okalaydokalay OP , (edited )

Not sure how to edit this on Memmy, so I’ll add a comment.

Appreciate all the suggestions here from everyone! I tried them but had no luck.

I think I had my GPU fail on me.

I think either it was a bad batch. The guy at the store tonight told me stories of other customers who have had some bad GPU issues from new GPUs, which makes me think maybe production has been crappier than usual lately and I got unlucky?

Second thing I think may have happened is I cheaped out on a PSU and I shouldn’t have. It had decent reviews on Amazon, but I should have shelled out the extra $10+ for a name brand PSU with some years behind it and dozens more reviews and a bigger company to back it. Idk, maybe.

So I ended up replacing my PSU with a name brand PSU and also returned the 4070 Ti under the extended warranty. The store I got it from actually let me basically get store credit, so I put down some extras for a beefier GPU from AMD.

I got everything set up tonight and have been using it for a little over an hour with no issues so far. Thinking the GPU was the culprit. I also put on a new dose of thermal paste for the CPU and did some cleaning during the installation, but don’t think that was really needed or contributed to this, but figured I’d throw it out here for anyone who happens to find this in the future.

But they sell retro games too! Yeah, that little shelf in the middle beside the shirts. No, the really skinny one. The one with one obscure GameCube game, 2 OG Xbox games, and a bunch of crappy Disney Channel DS games. Yeah, that’s the one. They sell retro games!

Bet you won’t ever hear him talk like that about a fellow cop getting gunned down or run over…the whole department would beat his ass.

But us plebs? Fuck ‘em.

One of my coworkers messaged me on our company chat one day while I was in a meeting. The little preview message said “Mongolian throat…” and I tried my hardest not to laugh. It was this song and I was hooked once I heard it.

Okalaydokalay ,

There’s a Hell’s Angels chapter up the street from my house. Very likely because there is also a world famous road in the city that motorcyclists love to ride.

I’m a motorcyclist as well, but I ride a sports bike and I’m not with any club. But as a rider on the streets, I see a lot of other motorcyclists and they are all generally very friendly to me when we pass each other. We do the typical waves and nods and also the alerting if one of us noticed cops in the direction of the other biker (pat your helmet to signal this to the biker on the opposing lane if you have a cop behind you or if one has a trap behind you or something similar).

I’ve heard of beefs between the motorcycles that Hell’s Angels types ride (those Harley-like bikes) and sports bikes like mine, but I’ve never had any problems, myself.

But I keep to myself and I don’t particularly like groups, so that may also have something to do with it.

When driving my car, I see motorcyclists a lot as well and never had issues there either.

As others said, you keep your distance and you’re generally okay. It’s when you get in their business or make them mad that you bring trouble directly on yourself. Though, I do agree with someone else’s sentiment that a lot of their illegal dealings do have impacts on the community, at large, so this isn’t always a sure fire way of protecting yourself. But this is what you can do, at most, to ensure you’re out of harms way. Generally they don’t want to bring attention to themselves, as making life harder for people in the area will make the cops eye their chapter more closely and that’s not good for their business.

United States and can on a motorcycle but not a car.

I kind of regret getting a manual transmission motorcycle and feel like I would enjoy one of the rarer automatic transmissions. I do not enjoy riding on city streets and having to constantly switch gears to adjust between slower and faster traffic. It may give me more control over the ride and bike, but it’s not enjoyable to have to focus on it, especially when I’m coming to a stop. The first few times I began riding, I stalled all the time. I’m better at it now but I still do not enjoy shifting.
