If you're going to write a character that portrays a real human ethnicity or culture, why wouldn't you hire an actor from said ethnicity? It's not like they picked one so small it would be too difficult.

That'd be like writing a show that has women in it and then only hiring men to play them.

In this case it wasn't an alien culture, it was native Americans.

@Neato@kbin.social avatar

I'm not worried. They literally titled it "Vaporware". If that doesn't show how insanely out of touch they are then nothing will.

Dozens of companies have tried to make storefronts and launchers to claw back some market share but none have come close to feature parity with Steam.

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

Well, maybe? A Steam competitor could try what Epic did and offer better deals. This time to publishers and players if they actually want customers. Or they could try to offer things Steam doesn't. Or they could just try for parity and see if it works? We haven't seen a platform with parity yet so maybe people would want a new option?

Warner Bros. Discovery Says Ongoing Strikes Will Mean $300M-$500M Hit to 2023 Earnings (www.hollywoodreporter.com)

"The company now expects to exceed $1.7 billion in free cash flow for the third quarter of 2023, in part due to the strong performance of 'Barbie' as well as incremental impact from strike-related factors," the entertainment giant says in a regulatory filing.

It would. But that would set the precedent that unions have any power and studios didn't have all of the power. Studios aren't willing to cave because they're afraid they can't completely control their workers and siphon as many profits as possible.

You are all saying that both games have boring, procedurally generated planets. Sounds like both games were designed with boring elements people don't want. Just because ED is more boring, doesn't mean Starfield is good.

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

There's ways to make places feel barren, open, unexplored and still be interesting. I've played several games that had sections that were essentially "empty" but still hand designed to be interesting. We don't need 1000 planets, we need good content.

One of the primary reasons people like Bethesda games is that they give players a large world to explore that's jam-packed with interesting things to see a do. If Bethesda abandons that and admits that majority of the content they expect players to interact with is going to be boring, procedurally-generated, then why should people play Starfield?

Bethesda isn't known for deep, complex stories. Their best writing is traditionally their side content with main stories panned. Their combat is pretty basic, but functional. Their RP is pretty sad and NPCs could be a lot better, especially these days. So it seems Bethesda has given away their biggest plus: an interesting world to explore.

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

I guess there's an argument that boring space exploration has an audience. I just didn't think that overlapped much with Bethesda's audience.

Any chance to have a separated [PORN] tag to avoid blocking all kind of NSFW posts?

Many NSFW have nothing to do with porn. Sometimes are horror contents, some times are crude images, some times are just lazy people who don’t know of the Spoiler tag. Can we have a quick and easy way to filter off all the (very funny but not alway wanted) Porn posts without locking out those other contents???

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

How would the filters apply to those communities where it's lewd anime but still technically clothed? I've had to block several communities for being what is as close to hentai as you can get.

I'd love it if the Super Mario Bros Movie was actually about jumping on turtles. But it's really just about brand recognition and easter eggs. It felt like everything was just there to be there and be seen. Not because it served the story.

Except Bowser and his song. That's oscar worthy.

More U.S. school districts are shifting to a 4-day week. Here's why. (www.cbsnews.com)

When the school bell rings in Independence, Missouri, this year, 14,000 students are trying something new: a four-day week, with Mondays off. And they’re not alone. As kids head back to school this year, a growing number will be returning to a four-day school week....

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

It's because Missouri isn't spending enough on schools.

It's a selling point in an era when schools are facing a national teacher shortage.

"The best way is to pay them better," Pallas said, adding that Missouri "ranks basically last" or "next to last in terms of teacher salaries."

In an effort to attract teachers in rural areas, Missouri saw district-wide shifts from five-day to four-day school weeks surge ahead of the 2022 academic year, with roughly 25% of schools moving to the new schedule, according to an online brief by the National Conference of State Legislatures.

And to cap it off, you get to spend more if you need to cover the child care that the school used to provide. On top of school taxes.

For parents who need childcare on Mondays, the district will offer it for $30 a day — a cost that could strain some families.

It is impossible to fully test things like this in test courses. Just like medicine, eventually you do all the tests you can and then expand it to the public. It sucks but there's no way to foolproof something in a lab.

Student aid should count. That's money that could go to students seeking education in state schools, not religious schooling. This is just like bullshit voucher programs stealing tax payer funded school funds to be sent to religious schools.

If kids or their parents want to go to church school, they can pay for it themselves. Not the tax payer.

If that's what it takes to ship a game that doesn't have multitudes of game breaking bugs like they're known for, perhaps the company has bigger problems. Like still using an engine that is this bad.

Correction: they don't need to "join" the Empire. They mostly lived on worlds the Empire already annexed, controlled or owned. They are in the Empire. Luke worked as a farmer on an Empire world. Bethesda doesn't have deep quests either. The creation engine is a weight around the devs necks. I'm not sure what you're trying to say but you're making my points for me.

It's definitely a Bethesda game. Their dialogue choices and roleplaying has always been shit. People like Bethesda games primarily because they're given a large open world to explore. But they made most of this one procedurally generated so they've lost their main good quality. I really hope the players are pushed by the stories and side quests to the hand-crafted worlds and the procedurally generated are mostly in the background for players that want to go off the beaten path.

The hottest lava gets about 200C lower than the melting point of what looks like stainless steel. And the water inside will actually wick that temperature from the outside into the water pretty effectively.

That's also why you can boil water in a paper cup by placing it over a flame. The water eats the eat like a hungry jiraffe.

I feel like we need a shakeup to copyright law. If you copyright something and place it for sale, you can't just remove it from sale. And if you do, like in the Zaslav-enshittification, it becomes public domain. Once you create and share something with the world, it isn't really yours anymore. Sure we should enable creators to monetize that for a reasonable amount of time (~20yr or so, or 10yr after death) but deliberately removing creation from being able to legally be seen again is bullshit. If you wanted to keep your shit secret, it shouldn't have been copyrighted and published. /rant

Neither the USSR nor the CCP ever tried to be communist. They used that banner to gather supporters and then seized all control of the government in an authoritarian takeover. Communism doesn't have "dear leaders" or usually even parties. Places like the USSR used their control over capital and wages and property ownership to control their populace entirely. We've never really seen an actual communist country because all the major efforts were sabotaged by people who wanted to be dictators.

So the specs seem pretty good. Some are equivalent to the Pixel 7, some a little less, some a bit better like the selfie camera. But the pixel is quite a bit cheaper, nearly $200 retail. I wonder if they're considering making a cheaper version equivalent to the Pixel a series.

United States Justice system is a joke.

Agreed. Prison in the US is tortuous and that is the point. It ruins your prospects when you get out, too. Ensuring crime is more likely. Prison in the US is absolutely pointless in the vast majority of cases to actually decrease crime.

America also has disproportionately long prison sentences for all types of crimes. 33 years ensures this person will be ~72yo when he gets out. So he will immediately be on medicare and likely retired, if possible. At that point, the only reason to not just execute a person is because you could later overturn the conviction.

We keep people in prison so long we're effectively denying them any more life while also spending huge gobs of money to do so AND also denying them any productivity to benefit society. It really is just about the American bloodthirst for revenge.

I'd be perfectly happy to see content at the same levels as BG3 campaign. Ideally a new campaign entirely, but if it's just DLC then an extra Act or a side campaign with new characters as a prequel or sequel or something would be neat.

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

5e at high level sucks because WOTC didn't bother to actually test any of it. They admitted they didn't test past level 10 and their inclusion of magic items is so bad that the recommendations for how many to include show the devs are terrified of them; you get so very few by official recommendations.

Save or Suck spells make higher level 5e (and 5e in general) a huge PITA to plan encounters for when players can just get lucky and end things outright. Magic items don't have a power level listing, just a rarity doing double duty that is wildly inaccurate. Class balance is shit: martials are boring. All they do is swing the weapon most of the time and very few class abilities really alleviate that. Spellcasters are so vastly more powerful and fun that multiclassing is way more popular than it should be.

Monsters in 5e are boring. Most of them are just bags of hit points that swing. Very few have bonus actions or reactions and the ones that do are often just "parry: increase AC once". They came out with gem dragons 2yr ago and they gave them all the SAME bonus actions: shapeshift and misty step. It's like they don't even bother to try, which is evident in recent releases.

/rant. But seriously, I love high level D&D. You can really raise the stakes. I'm DMing a level 12 5e campaign now and my primary way to make encounters interesting is two-fold: firstly is 3rd party content to get monsters that are actually interesting. Secondly I create objectives that aren't just "murder monster". I just had a bunch of literal street children hit my party with a net trap and arrow that makes them drop their items that said children tried to steal and run away with. 2 got away but they were able to find the hideout and defeat the boss. Actual stakes besides just getting killed.

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

If you're a 3.5/pf1e player, I'm sure you can imagine how high level spells can get really complicated to program in a game engine. And more importantly, how impossible to balance for them it can be. BG3 does a decent job of adapting spells to not be annoying or broken to use in a video game, but some high level 5e spells are way more ridiculous and open ended.

People don't know livestock are significant contributors to greenhouse gases? It's way, way less efficient to raise animals to eat than it is to just eat the foods you grown for them (or replace them with other crops). And cattle (cows, beef) is WAAAY worse than any other livestock animal.

Best thing to do individually is to reduce beef consumption. Vegetarianism is the actual best, but austerity for the masses is bullshit when billionaires do nothing. But if you want to help, reducing or eliminating beef is one of the better options food-wise.
