Chemirmir’s death comes about two weeks after Texas’ 100 prisons were placed on a rare statewide lockdown because of a rise in the number of killings inside the facilities, which prisons officials have said were related to drugs.

So prisons can't maintain the one thing they are there for: security. The prisons or the government funding them are allowing this to happen. They are complicit in homicide. Society judged this man and sentenced him to life, not to execution. Being lax in duty resulting is death is negligent homicide.

I wish TTRPG battle/ambience music tracks would be at least 10min long, even if they are looped by their creators. So many tracks are great that I buy but are only 2-3min long and aren't created to loop naturally. So my table is constantly listening to the intro/outro sections that tend to be more attention grabbing. I've had to learn to use audacity to fade them in and out but it's extra labor that doesn't always work.

Wait, did we have affirmative action for women, ever? We had affirmative action because the rate of black people in college was significantly less than expected for demographics due to systematic racism and oppression. So they needed a way to boost those numbers towards normalcy that bypassed the influences of the above oppression on grades.

At what % are universities thinking they need to give men an advantage in applications?

There are close to three women for every two men in college in this country. (The way schools report gender may not yet reflect many students’ nonbinary understanding of it, but the overall trend is clear.) Last year, women edged out men in the freshman classes of every Ivy League school save Dartmouth, and the gender ratio is significantly skewed at many state schools. (The rising sophomore class at the University of Vermont is 67 percent female; the University of Alabama is 56 percent female.) Most small liberal-arts colleges are close to 60 percent female, and the discrepancy is even more pronounced at community colleges and historically Black colleges and universities.

Huh, that's significant. And what do they think is the reasoning behind declining enrollment? Does this mean they are seeing men's applications being less competitive than women's? Or that there are fewer men applying? Because those are entirely different issues.

In high school, girls volunteer more on average, all the while getting higher grades, including in STEM subjects. By the time they graduate, they make up two-thirds of the top 10 percent of their class. ... The trade-off is especially relevant for young men, who tend to earn higher wages without a college degree than their female counterparts. ... Conservatives have also steadily been devaluing higher education in ways that might be more salient for men; the critique that liberal-arts colleges are pushing “gender ideology” on students positions those institutions as threatening to traditional conceptions of masculinity.

So it's mostly how competitive men are, somewhat that tuition is out of control, and right-wing extremism. Joy.

Men without college degrees tend to be underemployed, and underemployed men are less likely to marry and benefit from the grounding influence of raising children.

Having a kid apparently turns you more productive and stable? Yeah that's a load. Seeing as the guy who wrote that has an Institute for the study of Men and Boys, I doubt that's real.

It’s a longstanding fear among enrollment officers that if the gender ratio becomes too extreme at a given school, students of all genders will start to lose interest in attending (an idea that persists even if none of the admissions experts I spoke to could point to research about college enrollment supporting it).

    Lol.

“Whether it’s fair or not, colleges with gender parity or close to gender parity have been viewed as the most desirable.” ... But Title IX does not prohibit gender-based affirmative action in admissions at all schools. In 1972, when the details of Title IX were still under discussion, the presidents of some of the country’s most elite private universities persuaded legislators to exempt their admissions policies from the law.

    Sigh.

I graduated in Engineering and I remember a lot of talk about trying to attract women to that college. But I never heard anyone suggest affirmative action (enrolling less competitive applications) based on gender. It was always geared towards getting more to apply. Perhaps we should not be giving men an unfair advantage (truly the most unprivileged class of people in the history of ever /s) but ensuring they are prioritizing grades and extracurriculars in grade and high school. And keeping tuition down so it's more obviously financially incentivized..

    Neato ,
    @Neato@kbin.social avatar

I wonder if these land-holders live in an HOA. And if they do, I'm sure they're in violation of something. Racking up fines they aren't told about. Their HOA contract gets sold to a corporation to manage it. The corporation sees the ludicrous fines and repossesses their house as in the new HOA contract. Evict the land-holders.

It's not realistic because rich people don't have consequences but it'd be a nice sense of justice.

There's a lot of arguments in this thread. Underlying it all is a single issue, a single problem that is generating all of the worries and fears people have.

Men. We all know men are the problem. We all know society's allowance of men's behavior is the problem. And yet we tiptoe around it with things like this.

ITT: men who are ignoring the massive problem with sexual harassment, assault, and rape. "not all men". But enough.

Bethesda is sub-par in just about every aspect of game development. Shallow combat. Basic dialogue trees. Skill/feats haven't evolved in several games. Engine so old it has to have loading screens for every type of transition.

But you picked the story and acting to tout as good? Bethesda is well-known to have pathetically bad main-story arcs. Only a handful of side quests end up being engaging to most people. The face animations are...better now but still deeply in the uncanny valley. Their acting is usually deadpan with only the merest speck of emotion and shown as if the actor is reading their script for the first time during recording.

Honestly the main thing that Bethesda games have going for them are a detailed, hand-crafted world that is fun to explore and experiment in. Which...Bethesda handily disposed of to have the majority of its world and worlds be procedurally generated.

Instead he merely did it to a strong US ally to benefit a long-time US adversary. An adversary we have practically as many sanctions on as is feasible before it becomes a declaration of war.

I don't know what crime this is. Logan Act violation? But at this point Starlink is being used as a strategic asset in a US ally's war and should be seized by the US government as a military asset.

The Matrix Awakens ran on the console presented by Nintendo with “graphics comparable to current generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft” , citing that medium. The demo included “advanced” ray tracing and used Nvidia’s artificial intelligence upscaling technology, the well-known DLSS .

So Nintendo didn't share specs. And they saw a handheld Unreal 5 demo that they thought looked as good as ps5/xbsx. But it was also running DLSS so it might have running at significantly lower resolutions.

But on a handheld screen that's harder to tell. And Nintendo are masters of making games running at low resolutions and levels of detail look like they are a lot better. So there's zero chance it's actually as capable as a PS5 but there is a decent chance they can run Nintendo games that would appear to be. So maybe TOTK at 4k@60 with higher resolution textures? Honestly that'd be plenty.

Are apple consumers more prone to this complaint than the rest of us? Since I've had cell phones I've moved from USB-mini to USB-micro to USB-C. Every time it was a better change. Oh look! This old racist chestnut. "The real racists are the ones calling out racism."

    you should watch Monty Python

Are you seriously equating a sketch comedy troupe with hiring new actors and actresses? Not only is that a bad faith argument that misses the point entirely, it's not even a good attempt.
