I was thinking the same thing - it’d be nice if they could just keep doing what they’re doing now since it’s great, but who knows, maybe this will lead to some other great films that otherwise never would have been made. If they can maintain their quality in the big budget space, there’s a relatively unfilled niche for popcorn flicks made with care and artistry.

Off the top of my head, Mad Max: Fury Road fits the description of ‘big budget, action, based on existing IP’ and I don’t think anyone would wish that hadn’t been made.

Maybe they will start producing garbage; it’s entirely possible. I’d rather have a little optimism and wait to hate until it actually happens though. It’d be awesome to see what passionate and talented filmmakers like the Daniels would do with both a big budget and the creative freedom A24 has historically offered.

I find myself saying this one a lot. When I feel like I’m putting in effort and the other person won’t meet me in the middle something like this always seems to slip out, but I hate how passive aggressive it is.

Reframing it so ‘the problem’ is the problem rather than the person is a good idea. Helps with communication, and if it can be internalized, it seems like a better way to think about the conflict too.

The biggest reason is instability - packages in its main repo are held back two weeks, while the same isn’t true of anything from the AUR, meaning potential dependency version mismatch. It’s kinda rare for this to be an issue, but it happens enough to make it a subpar choice for long-term usage. More info here

You make some good points - I don’t think anyone can reasonably argue linux is in a state where a ‘regular’ user will find it more productive than windows. But, statements like these make as many assumptions about an individual’s use case and workflow as saying ‘everyone should use linux because xyz’:

If you live in a bubble where you don’t have to collaborate with anyone else

There are annoyances from time to time, sure, but they’re way fewer and simpler to deal with than the hoops you’ve to go through to get a minimal and viable/productive desktop experience on Linux

If you buy a Windows license and spend the time you would’ve spent dealing with Linux compatibility issues doing your actual job you’ll, most likely, get a better ROI.

Again, it’s certainly not reasonable to say linux is universally (or even generally) better for productivity. But neither is it reasonable to say it always isn’t. Operating systems are tools, which one to use depends entirely on the situation.

I think everything’s delayed, rather than weekly releases, but I’m not 100% sure. Either way, in theory this gives them more time to catch any major bugs and hold those packages, though in practice I don’t believe that happens much at all considering how short the delay is.

The 30% cut Steam takes is quite a bit. Considering the near-monopoly it has on game distribution, that could easily mean the difference between turning a profit and not for an indie developer.

Personally their efforts towards things I support (PC handhelds, Linux gaming) and the convenience of the platform outweigh the things I dislike, but being frustrated by its problems is understandable when people don’t really have another choice.

Quality of output depends a lot on how common the code is in its training data. I would guess it’d be best at something like Python, with its wealth of teaching materials and examples out there.

I’m surprised there aren’t more distros that come packaged with it. If someone’s used a graphical text editor in the past decade, then they know how to use micro. The only distro I know of that has it by default is Garuda.

For some reason this movie never quite worked for me. It’s the exact sort of movie I usually love, and no doubt many of my favorite movies were inspired by it, but there’s something about the characters and interactions that makes it hard for me to connect. The mood of it is great though.

Great movie! As long as I can remember my family’s had it on VHS (then DVD), I must have seen it dozens of times over the years. Obviously I think it holds up lol but nice to hear it actually does.

Yes Man is my other favorite Jim Carrey movie, probably in part because he plays it somewhat serious too (though not as serious as Truman Show). It got middling reviews but I enjoyed it quite a bit - the comedy is a little more subtle than what you expect when you hear the premise and lead actor, but it works, and the romance elements are nice in it too. No masterpiece but worth a watch if you’re in the mood for something light and fun.

I hate this so much. People should be free to act like they want (as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone), because why the hell not? What’s so objectively better about acting in the ‘normal’ way? But everything outside the very narrow idea of normal is treated like a problem by default.

I have some tics that come out when I’m alone that I’ve filtered out around others as long as I can remember, and honestly I think that’s part of why I feel so claustrophobic in social situations. I don’t even know how to act like ‘myself’ in public if I want to.

Seeing people being themselves regardless of how it looks to the current typical sensibilities is the only thing that lets me feel like I might be able to do the same. So fwiw, every little bit of rule breaking you have done or will do makes the world a little better for me, and anyone else who doesn’t feel welcome. Thanks.

Not everything actually requires a GUI, obviously. But anything that requires configuration, especially for controlling a hardware device, should have a fully functional GUI. I know Linux is all about being in control, and users should not be afraid to use the command line, but if you have to learn another bespoke command syntax...

I would characterize Michael more by his self-righteousness and ego-driven attempts to be good than his actual goodness; so many of the show’s hijinks stem from his savior complex bringing out the hypocrisy in his attempts to be ‘a good guy’.

To be clear I think it adds to the humor, not complaining at all. Horrible people being horrible makes great comedy and Arrested Development offers far more than just that (probably my favorite comedy show). But it can get kinda depressing, if I’m not in a great mood I can’t take more than a couple episodes at a time.

Funny, my first experience with the show was similar to yours - watched the first season or so and wasn’t into it, then started watching again in season ~five with someone else - but I actually started to really enjoy it from there. Granted it only took like a season for it to really go downhill, but it got me interested enough to watch from the beginning once it was over. Despite the knowledge of the terrible conclusion the first few seasons ended up being some of my favorite TV.

Wow, that sounds like the worst GoT viewing experience possible lol. I think I can see what you mean; there are definitely a lot of scenes technically unnecessary to move the plot along, and combined with the number of plotlines it makes the story move glacially (not helped by plotline conclusions not necessarily making the impacts you would expect on the story).

I think that’s actually a big part of what makes it stand out, though. It gives the world- and character-building a uniquely organic feel that wouldn’t be there if the story was the focus, with lots of incidental moments that don’t necessarily need any weight. The enjoyment comes more from learning and immersion than anything.

Admittedly I’m all about characters and atmosphere, as long as those are solid I can enjoy something regardless of whatever else it does or doesn’t have going. Watching with full spoilers I got basically nothing from any progression in the show; though in a way I think it actually made me appreciate the moment-to-moment of it more when I had zero expectations for the destinations and could just enjoy the progression.

Now that I think about it seeing the last few seasons first might be the right way to watch it lol, if someone’s still interested after knowing nothing concludes satisfactorily then it’s for them.

Seems like an overreaction considering how many degrees of separation the instance has from actual pirated stuff. No pirated content is hosted on dbzer0, no direct links to pirated content either. Even if a copyright holder takes issue with the community it would seem unlikely for them to target one of hundreds of instances which federate and have it cached rather than the actual source instance itself.

That being said, I don’t know where lemmy.world’s servers are located, some places are pretty strict with piracy. Even if it’s a small chance I can see how, from the perspective of an admin, it wouldn’t be worth risking the whole instance and potential legal action.

Still seems like an extreme response to me, but hey, beauty of the fediverse and all that. I chose a small instance specifically to avoid defederations like this and I’m perfectly happy with it (thanks for hosting neo).

Same here! It seems like a great game otherwise, but I just couldn’t get immersed in it because of the controls. Didn’t feel like I was playing as Arthur so much as watching him and hoping he’d do what I want.

Huh, same here! I have it on GBA and have been periodically playing it since I was a kid, but I’ve never actually been more than 2/3 or so in. I was never able to put my finger on why - it seems like an amazing game with its charming aesthetic, good controls, it does a lot of things well - but now that you say it I think you’re right, the level design and emphasis on checking every nook and cranny really does make it kind of a slog. I just booted up my last save and played a bit of the next level, and the amount of backtracking, secret side areas, and mini puzzles is kinda overwhelming.

The biggest issues have already been mentioned by others but I’d just like to add - there’s a lot more climbing in Forbidden West, but the mechanics feel a lot worse (to me anyway). I found the climbing in HZD boring but serviceable; in HFW it just feels awful, Aloy never does what I want her to do and I regularly plunge to my doom for unknown reasons. Also the pullcaster (basically a grappling hook) is super clunky to use and adds essentially nothing gameplay-wise, just some random superfluous interaction points. It feels like there might have been some cut content there.

I enjoyed Zero Dawn quite a bit - the hunting and fighting mechanics in particular - but Forbidden West is kind of a sidegrade at best. It just feels like a sequel for the sake of a sequel.
