mub OP , (edited )

(Edited for clarity) This was interesting. It gave me arandr to generate a script which is great for lazy me. That script “works” in that it doesn’t give any errors when I test it, but it actually doesn’t have any effect on the login screen. In fact with more digging i discovered that xrandr just doesn’t work at all. I tried setting the display to a lower resolution (default is 3440x1440 so I used 1920x1080) in the control panel to test the xrandr command but xrandr tells me the mode (3440x1440) is not found. I looked again in xrandr and saw that any resolution higher 1920x1080 is not listed any more. I reset the resolution back to 3440x1440 in the control panel then looked in xrandr again and all the expected resolutions are listed again.

xrandr errors when I try to set my display to anything other than the setting it is currently using. Either I’m don’t something stupid with the syntax (99.999% confident I’m doing it right), or xrandr is broken with my setup. Maybe kde plasma 6 and wayland is giving me grief here? My PC has an AMD 7900XT GPU, so maybe it just doesn’t like my GPU for some reason.

Here is the output from xrandr for my current settings:

<span style="color:#323232;">DP-1 connected primary 3440x1440+0+1080 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 800mm x 330mm
</span><span style="color:#323232;">HDMI-A-1 connected 1920x1080+758+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 520mm x 290mm
</span>

Here are the commands I’m using in the Xsetup script.

<span style="color:#323232;">xrandr --output HDMI-A-1 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 758x0 --rotate normal
</span><span style="color:#323232;">xrandr --output DP-1 --primary --mode 3440x1440 --pos 0x1080 --rotate normal
</span>
mub OP ,

It is blank right now. I’m looking at xrandr right now, but a basic check into sddm.conf suggests I can’t set resolution in there, but can’t call scripts. Might come back to this though.

mub OP ,

Ok that explains it. I tried applying the plasma config earlier. Didn’t fix.

Did you watch the one with Decker’s voiceover, or without?

Apparently the common experience is watching it without voiceover first makes it harder to watch. But watching it with voiceover first makes rewatching it without, more interesting. Or something like that.

mub ,

I swear his latest movie is just the “Emperor’s new clothes” test. If you watch the whole thing you failed the test. I managed to stop around 30 mins ish.

mub ,

Original version has voiceover, directors cut does not.

Feeling lost and with no direction, what skill should I learn?

Hi everyone. I am feeling like I’ve lost any direction after getting laid off earlier this year (was working as an analyst in telecom and very recently landed a much lower position in healthcare data entry due to necessity). I already have several hobbies but I am either burnt out on them or they have lost their luster...

mub ,

Gymnastics. Seriously. You don’t need to be all that athletic to do the core basics. You get fitter and have fun just throwing yourself onto big soft mats.

Put words together into sentences that make me sound like a grown-up.

Put the ball into an open net in Rocket League.

The music. The early 90s saw the rise of independent record labels which then gave rise to bands who wouldn’t have stood a chance otherwise, aka Indie Music. After the 60s, the 90s is by far the best era for modern music ever.

I have the same problem the other way around. When I use chrome it feels like I’m using a kids browser. Slightly cutesy with too many curvy bits. Sort of like the difference between Duplo (chrome) and Lego (Firefox). Basically the same thing, but also not.

mub ,

Rocket League, and lots of other games, seem to have stayed on Reddit.

mub ,

My son has a gaming laptop that is plugged in constantly. I vaguely remember reading that all modern laptops protect the battery to some degree, though not sure how. I’m guessing it is by using the mains while charging. Not sure what the damage is to a battery that is constantly fully charged.

mub ,

I only stuck my head in the and got the same feeling I did when I watched the first 30 mins of Lost. I stopped before going all in.

I wear whatever the fuck I want. I once had a sort of boss (not a line manager just a coordinator. Our team were all contractors and didn’t really report to one person as such). She saw me crossing the office one day and pulled me aside to tell me I had to wear a shirt and tie from now on. Anyway, I just said “nope”, and walked off.

She had been trying shit like this on our team for a while and we knew we could just ignore her about this stuff. Still satisfying though.

mub ,

I’m confused why men still wear suits. They look like school uniforms to me, and make men look like overgrown school kids.

Women have far more choice, and the equivalent clothing items on when would be considered too casual. Time this shit changed.

mub ,

Could you do it in 2 phases? First, everyone selects a random partner and exchanges their random number. Each pair then has a result that is locked in. Then everyone submits their result to be summed up as already suggested (Pos/neg = heads/tails).

If there are an uneven number of players, then one player makes a three-some.

mub ,

The risk of a pair collision should be mitigated by all pairings being random. And both pairs announce they pair with so that they can’t lie.

But collusion is possible if they happen to pair with another cheater which is not guaranteed unless every is a cheater.

mub ,

Any solution we come up with can probably be used to just decide the answer anyway.

How about, every player puts in a token to say I’m going to play. Then every player plays an encrypted answer. Once every player has answered they each reveal the key to unlock their answer to every player. Everyone then sees the overall answer at the same time.

mub ,

Yeah you’ve been more technical than me.

mub ,

I desperately want a simple GUI for setting the sample and bit rates for my audio input device. Mine is a Focusrite 2i2 gen 3, but there should be a fairly universal way to do this in Pipewire.

mub ,

Played it without VR. Felt the same. Maybe because I intentionally waited until late at night so it would be dark enough with the lights off. Awesome game.

How old is the oldest building in the town you live in?

To those from the Western hemisphere, it’s always fascinating to hear that some homes and businesses from the times of the Greek philosophers still have inhabitants, and then you remember that the Western hemisphere is itself not without its own examples, for example some Mexican villages still have temples from the times of...

I live around the Yorkshire moors. There are dry stone walls up there which are up to 600 years old. I love walking up in the hills and thinking about that.

In the UK I think it depends how much you torrent, how often, and who your ISP is. I’m pretty sure the big main ISPs all have to be vigilant and tell their customers off for doing it. I use a small ISP, and I set my upload speed to 10Mbits and my download to half my max bandwidth. I don’t seed a library of stuff just whatever is being downloaded, then I stop. So yes. I’m a leech and have been for years. No VPN. However we only torrent when we can’t get something on a service we already pay for so not more than 3 times a week.

tl;dr - in the UK use a small ISP and stay below the radar and you’ll be fine.

mub ,

This seems like bullshit to me. I’ve not seen anyone complaining their VPN isn’t working. And any business with staff using VPNs would not be happy if they managed to let that update get applied.

Do you practice self care?

Hello. Let’s talk about self-care. Who practices self-care regularly? I’ve been making an absolute effort to practice self-care, and it’s definitely improving my mood. I floss, meditate, do qigong, breathwork, etc. Yes, flossing is self-care, take care of yo teefs. What does everyone do for self-care? Bonus question: Where...

mub ,

This is without doubt the most important form of self care, and the definition most people jump to when asked to say what self-care means.

mub ,

Easy to mistake. Jelqing is not jerking. Not sure what jelking though. I should wear my glasses when I post.

mub ,

Oh. Google jelging.

Was going to say Hot Fuzz. You can watch it multiple times and it is still funny.

I’m on Pixel 7 and current Firefox, but it won’t install. It Just says “no app found to open xpi files”

Edit: fixed. Have to engage Dev options. Settings > About > tap the Firefox icon a few times. Then go back to settings and you’ll see the “install add-on from file” option.

Not eating breakfast. Seriously. Breakfast is to blame for a lot of obesity. The idea that breakfast is the most important meal of the day is an invention.

Easily find program name from context menu/without terminal?

I occasionally need to know the names of programs. I asked here about “Run as Administrator” being added to the context menu (like in Windows), and the response was basically “can’t be easily done”. an example is if I wish to edit a config file it cannot be done without accessing the terminal. Knowing the name...

mub ,

I understand your pain. Most things you need to configure are either in your home direct under .config or they prompt for admin if they need it. However, not everything has a convenient gui interface to make config changes. This is mostly ok because configuration is usually done once and then never touched again. This is how Linux works, it just isn’t a like for like replacement for windows, though it can achieve the same goals.

I like a better gui for adjusting audio devices, specifically the sample and bit rates. I haven’t found anything that can do it in a straightforward gui.

Does it still run Roblox? Since it stopped working under wine (again) I read it was the only way to get Roblox on Linux.

Can’t see evidence you don’t actually look at.

Chrysler grand voyager. It was relatively new, but omg it felt borderline dangerous. It was actually funny for the first 10 mins but I had to deliver this POS few hours away. On a straight smooth road it was like driving a sofa, comfy and soft. Once it entered a corner it turned into a boat, and stopping hard twice in a row had limited success. I asked the dealer where I delivered it too about how it handled. Apparently this is standard behaviour for Cryslers, and in the US it is fine (straight roads, limited hard breaking) and they love soft cars. In the UK we expect cars to stop and go round corners so we notice just how bad the Grand voyager is.

I won’t drive a Crysler again.

mub ,

I may have over simplified. In the UK, especially in Yorkshire, the roads are hilly and twisty. We mostly drive manual cars, so we can ride the engine instead of the brakes when descending long steep hills. The Grand voyager struggled, and while I could lock that slush box of an auto in lower gears, it was not happy about it.
