Palestinians in Gaza say finding clean drinking water is like “prospecting for gold” (mondoweiss.net)

For Palestinians in Gaza, the most urgent daily task is the search for water. “Obtaining water has become like prospecting for gold,” explains H., a writer with We Are Not Numbers, “and whoever finds drinkable water is considered wealthy."...

Made in Gaza: Hamas Rockets the Product of Foreign Aid and Smuggled Material

UN gives them fertilizer to grow food and feed the people. Hamas uses it to make rocket fuel.

Thorny_Thicket ,

I condemn Israel for the civilians they’re killing in Gaza. I do not approve and I hope they will face the consequences for it.

Do you condemn Hamas for murdering the 250 innocent people at the peace rave? Are you able to critizice both sides or do you just turn a blind eye to the other?

Thorny_Thicket ,

There’s a ton I condemn Israel for. If this is true then I’ll just add it to the list. Believe it or not, I condemn the murder of civilians period. It doesn’t matter whose doing it. Plenty of religious extremism and disregard for others going on on both sides. That’s why I’m not rooting for one or the another.

Residents of the kibbutz said that Hamas fighters told them not to be afraid as they were there to fight the IDF, and they state they were not harmed by Hamas.

Also Hamas

Thorny_Thicket ,

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

I’m calling them out for criticizing Israel for killing civilians, but failing to criticize Hamas for doing the exact same thing.

Thorny_Thicket ,

I won’t argue with you, in the same way that I won’t engage in an argument about racism with a piece of shit that uses the N-word, you child-murder justifying fuck.

Yet here you are still arguing.

Thorny_Thicket ,

Calling who out?

The people criticizing IDF for killing civilians while being unable to voice a single criticizm towards Hamas when they’re doing the exact same thing.

Thorny_Thicket ,

Sure people can criticize Hamas, but they’ve done considerably less damage in this conflict.

But is that because they’re being much more considerate and careful around civilians than the IDF or is it simply just lack of resources? Imagine if the roles were reversed.

Thorny_Thicket , (edited )

I was replying to [email protected]

The murder of civilians by intentionally withholding food and water, and blockading all entrances to the area is explicitly a war crime.

I’m not disputing what they’re saying. I just get the feeling, that people tend to be quite one-sided when it comes to this issue. I’m not actually even quite sure why I replied to this user in particular, as the message itself I mostly agree with.

Thorny_Thicket ,

None of what I’m saying disputes that. I hope Israel will be held accountable for all the crimes they’ve commited. I don’t agree with how, but I agree with why they’re doing it. What do you imagine they’re even supposed to do? On top of the IDF’s disregard, they’re commonly used as human shields aswell.

Thorny_Thicket ,

I don’t think my adblocker cares what kind of ads they’re trying to show me. If anything their algorithms will just get confused for why this guy who used to be here hours every day now only comes to watch war videos once a day but no longer comments or upvotes anything.

It’s Definitive – The Gulf Stream Is Weakening (www.iflscience.com)

The Gulf Stream plays a significant role in maintaining the climate of the US East Coast and Western Europe. “We conclude with a high degree of confidence that Gulf Stream transport has indeed slowed by about 4% in the past 40 years.” The full study is Here

That’s just Germany. I don’t think the anti-nuclear sentiment is that popular elsewhere. Finland just started a new reactor, granted we began bulding it already back in 2005.

Thorny_Thicket ,

The only times I see people like me, who prefer owning a car “shouting down” people adcovating for better public transport, is when people suggest I should get rid of my car and ride a bus instead. A good public transportation system is a net-good for everyone, and in no way inconveniences me especially if I never even use it. It’s not busses and trains I have an issue with - it’s the naive city dwellers who thinks that because they get around just fine without a car then anyone would.

Thorny_Thicket ,

Why even bother responding to me if, instead of addressing what exactly you take issue with in my statement, you just immediately resort to insults?

Thorny_Thicket ,

Solid Explorer but it’s not like I’ve tried all the others too. It’s what I always go to and it has served me good.

Care to elaborate a bit more on the death part? You honestly think it’s going to kill you?

If couple hours without electricity is potentially lethal for you, then climate change is the least of your worries.

They’re making slow progress constantly but the front lines are barely moving. There’s obviously a chance for a big break through as the first defences are always the heaviest and it should get easier after that, but there’s still a long way to go, and they’re both taking heavy casualties every single day.

Thorny_Thicket ,

Why would Ukraine want to take Russian land?

Thorny_Thicket ,

Sure, but implying Ukraine would want to attack its neighbouring country, to take land for any reasons seems strange. That’s more like what Russia would do.

Elon lied about the monkeys — and he shouldn't be trusted to put his Neuralink chips in human brains.

"They are claiming they are going to put a safe device on the market, and that's why you should invest," Ryan Merkley at the Physicians Committee, told Wired. "And we see his lie as a way to whitewash what happened in these exploratory studies."

Really heartbreaking reading what happened to the monkeys.

People quite rightly think of Elizabeth Holmes as a fraud for making false medical claims about what the Theranos machines could do. So why aren't Elon's claims at Neuralink being held to the same level of scrutiny?

@technology

Thorny_Thicket ,

I wonder what you guys thought animal testing is about, if this is somehow surprising to you. This is just another day at the office for the people running these experiments. The issue is not “Elon doing animal testing” but animal testing in itself.

However - if you think we shouldn’t do it then you should also be aware of the tradeoffs. Without this cruelty there’s no modern medicine either. Also, if you complain about this but eat meat then you’re a hypocrite.

Thorny_Thicket ,

It’s easy to say as someone with a healthy brain. A blind, deaf or a paralyzed person might feel different once there truly is a way to get your sight back with this technology.

Thorny_Thicket ,

What in my message indicates to you that I didn’t read it?

Thorny_Thicket ,

Back in the days only people with a strong will to survive did, infact, survive and the genes from those people are in all of us. Many like to pretend they don’t posses these features but that’s only because you’re living a modern comfortable life, so you never need to rely on it. Especially compared to what it would’ve been 10k years ago.

You can take any modern man, and put him along with his family in a house and place an angry stranger pounding at the door shouting threats at his wife and kids and you’ll soon discover the violence you just thought wasn’t there.

When adjusting bicycle derailleur, use the second smallest and second largest cogs to adjust the shifting and the biggest and smallest ones only to adjust the limit screws. There’s no point adjusting the cable tension if your derailleur is resting against the limit screw.

Thorny_Thicket ,

Economics is one of those subjects where the more you undestand the less you feel like you do. I can barely wrap my mind around index funds and compounding interests.

Thorny_Thicket ,

Advanced tip is to remove the derailleur hanger and see against a flat surface wether it’s straight or not. If not, and you don’t have the calibration tool then just clamp it on a vice and use hammer/pliers/crecent wrench to bend it back straight. It’s not going to be perfect but since it’s already bent you’re probably not going to make it worse either.

Thorny_Thicket ,

I didn’t know such feature even existed

What makes you enjoy "generic" Youtubers?

I don’t want to offend anyone by the term “generic”, but by that term I mean the typical Youtubers who generate the same repetitive content over and over and over and over and over again and it’s usually content that is made with little effort and often with filler, such as unnecessary jokes. For obvious reasons I...

Thorny_Thicket ,

I wonder that about quite many things. I feel like I’m not in the target audience for almost anything new.

I mean there’s not even anything particularly wrong about that stuff. It’s just that I only have so many hours in a day, and there’s plenty interesting content out there for my niche interests, so I don’t want to spend it watching some braind numbing entertainment that’s mostly directed at the “masses”

18+ What makes something moral or immoral?

I just came to know of a woman who was raped. i.e., not on TV but in real life, I saw her sobbing face. I didn’t have a clue what to do. I believe the right thing to tell her would have been to say, go to the police right now and give a rape exam, this would at least make sure there is a small chance that the scumbags who...

Thorny_Thicket ,

Isn’t the will of God basically irrelevant, since no other than the God themselve can know it?

Thorny_Thicket ,

Sure, but since nobody can know the will of God, then why does that even have to be taken into account? Isn’t it like trying to do math, but you don’t know and can’t know what X is? You just got to find your way by some other means and forget X ever even existed.

Thorny_Thicket ,

I’m a plumber. Just let it slide this time, okay?

Thorny_Thicket ,

It’s a bad analogy, but my argument isn’t against our search of greater morality. Rather, it’s about the relevance of God in that pursuit. Morality is a challenge that we, as humans, must figure out by ourselves. Even if there exists an all-knowing God with a specific set of moral rules in mind, if we cannot know/understand them, and God chooses not to reveal them, then, by definition, those rules are inaccessible to us. In such a scenario, morality as defined by God becomes irrelevant to our human experience. Instead, we should rely on reason, science, and evidence-based research to find what behaviour promotes the thriving of our species.

Thorny_Thicket ,

Well, my response wasn’t directed at the original question but rather your comment on it. What I’m trying to say here, is that even if there is a God with a well-defined set of absolute moral principles, if He chooses not to disclose them to us clearly, it then shouldn’t be a source of concern either. Trying to figure out something that can’t be known is a fool’s errand. Instead, we should rather focus on finding out what constitutes a good life from our human perspective and strive to live accordingly. If, in the end, it turns out that actions like a gay marriage lead to condemnation, then it frankly just raises questions about the fairness of a God who hasn’t been more clear about such important matters.

Thorny_Thicket , (edited )

I didn’t really have an opinion on the Israel/Palestine conflict or about Netanyahu as a person before he was a quest on Lex Fridman’s podcast. He seemed like an extremely disingenuous person, with obviously very politician answers to the questions presented to him. That made me, for the first time, to look into what this conflict is about and though it’s still quite nuanced, my view however isn’t especially favourable to Israel now.

Thorny_Thicket ,

Considering that I get a few new bot followers every day, and has been for probably over a year now, but my total follower count isn’t increasing much, I’m quessing they’re indeed removing these accounts, but new ones just keep popping up. That would pretty much be on par with why he says he’s going to start charging for it.

Thorny_Thicket ,

Don’t quote me on this but I believe his thing is what the handle says; knees over toes. It used to be considered to be bad for your joints doing exercises such as deep squats for example, but his belief is that it’s the exact opposite. He used to have really bad knees himself, and couldn’t really play basketball like he wanted to, but by doing these exercises he was able to strenghten his knees to the point they no longer cause issues for him. The main exercise he’s recommending is pulling a sled backwards. He tells about Finnish lumberjacks who used to drag logs backwards like this and how they had super strong knees.

Thorny_Thicket ,

He’s the wealthiest man in the world. That doesn’t mean he has a lair full of cash and just wants more. People really struggle to understand the difference between wealth and money in the bank. This isn’t about hoarding money just for the sake of it.

Thorny_Thicket ,

What makes you think he’s short on cash? Wealthy people don’t store their wealth in cash anyways. The money is tied to the stocks of the companies they’re running. That’s why he needed to lend the money for twitter too; he doesn’t have that kind of cash, but people are willing to borrow it to him because of his wealth.

If you just had read the article you’d see that they have lost 50% of the advertisers and are losing money. This isn’t about wanting more money just for the sake of it. No company can exist if their finances are on the negative.

Thorny_Thicket ,

Is he just supposed to pay for the running of twitter out of his pocket or what? It says there they’ve lost 50% of advertisers, and are making negative profit. That isn’t sustainable. The purchase of twitter has cost him 40-something billion, and still keeps costing him even more. It’s not about just wanting more profit, but to atleast break even.

Thorny_Thicket ,

What are you saying?

Thorny_Thicket ,

Finnish language doesn’t have gender specific pronous. Our equivalance for he/she is “hän” and it just refers to a person - not any specific gender. You can literally identify as anything you like, and “hän” still includes to you. Seems like the obvious solution to the “issue”.

Thorny_Thicket , (edited )

Smart is a weird word and I don’t know if I would describe me as that.

I rather consider myself as rational/intellectual. I might not know a lot of things, but I feel like the way I think is somewhat uncommon when compared to the general population. Emotions don’t cloud my judgement as much, and I seem to have this ability to take few steps back and observe things from afar. Because of this I’m a really mixed bag when it comes to my views on current affairs, and by knowing my stance on few issues doesn’t really help you to figure out what I think about the rest. I can usually also be honest to myself about facts even when it’s inconvenient for me.

I’m the kind of person who you ask a simple question from, and you get a lecture in return, because I’m physically unable to give overly simplified answers to complex, nuanced questions which is basically all of them.

Thorny_Thicket , (edited )

That is an unbelieveably black and white way to look at things, and doesn’t represent the real world at all.

The right wing equivalent would be; “One side wants me to have freedom to choose for myself, while the other wants to abort me before I’m even born.”

Thorny_Thicket ,

One of my favourite things about reddit was that I could sort by controversial, and would often find a reasonable take explaining the view of the opposing side. Even when I don’t agree with it, I still want to hear it, and what I often found the case to be is that I didn’t quite agree with either sides and (unsurprisingly) the thruth is somewhere on the middle.

On Lemmy this often is not the case and I pretty much only hear one side of the argument and not many bothers to write a reasonable take arguing against the apparent view of the masses because it’ll just receive downvotes and bad faith counter-arguments. The extreme left is just as unreasonable as the extreme right and it’s often the majority in the middle who simply stays silent. There seems to be almost no space for nuance and complexity.

Thorny_Thicket ,

My upvote to downvote ratio is probably 1:3. I downvote mostly short messages that don’t bring any value into the discussion. These are usually “fuck this guy” and “fuck this system” etc. Then again I sometimes upvote comments I disagree with only because they’re atleast putting some effort into it and are not afraid to bring up an alternative view point or something. Basically I’m using the voting to indicate what kind of messages I want more and what I want less.

Thorny_Thicket ,

I’ve blocked 130 users so far and usually add few people to that list every day.

Even on a small place like Lemmy there’s still way more content than I can pay attention to. If I see someone posting stupid shit and I go see their profile and discover that’s the only kind of content they post then by blocking them I just increase the signal to noise ratio on my feed. Quality over quantity.

However I try to stick to my principles when blocking. One “fuck this person” -message doesn’t get you blocked unless by a quick glance I can find several of them in your history.

Also my instance has defederated like 20 instances so that alone probably adds 500 users to that list.
