I must say it felt weird when I had the first of my staff with a 2000 birthdate, that young falla is now an assistant regional branch manager

come on, Brodie is not that bad

ps (i can’t remember whos channel i saw this on) If you have 2 videos with the same content and the same title but one has that style of thumbnail, the one with that style of thumbnail will get promoted by the algorithm. If I remember correctly it was something huge on the engagement

Someone had to be first…

I’ll get mt coat

I was explaining to my daughter about the differences between Gimp and Photoshop and saw that Adobe had a page that claimed to compare the two. It never compares the two. It barely mentions Gimp. (www.adobe.com)

I expected ridiculous propaganda from Adobe, but they give absolutely no reasons why Photoshop is better than Gimp and list a bunch of things that Gimp can do too....

BlueEther ,
@BlueEther@no.lastname.nz avatar

I was usig both in the early 2000’s, at that stage there wasn’t too much difference in the UIs. Gimp just seems to have stuck (more or less) with mid 2000’s design concepts in the UI

I have 3 *BSD vms on proxmox, OpnSense and TrueNAS as well as a GhostBSD desktop for ‘play’. The TrueNAS started as a bare metal install and is now in it’d 3rd 4th server

I also have 2 Macs in the house…

So I guess *BSD is well represented here, looking forward to the read

github.com/ubergeek77/Lemmy-Easy-Deploy used to work well, not sure if it is maintained still @ubergeek77 ?

BlueEther ,
@BlueEther@no.lastname.nz avatar

Well it works well enough for my small instance, so a thimbs up from here.

I’ll also point out that it was easy to configure and chang for my needs

When I was living in the UK (Darlo and Swindon) there were some really good wild camping groups. They are happy for new people to join then and will do walks and camping trips (all the way through to multi night). Find a group of people and chat

Get pack fit by doing day walks with all your gear etc (and don’t over pack or under pack)

What is it about the text messages and emails sent by older people that make me feel like I'm having a stroke?

Maybe they're used to various shortcuts in their writing that they picked up before autocorrect became common, but these habits are too idiosyncratic for autocorrect to handle properly. However, that doesn't explain the emails I've had to decipher that were typed on desktop keyboards. Has anyone else younger than 45 or so felt similarly frustrated with geriatrics' messages?

@asklemmy

no, they were our parents, and they never let us youngins (now around 50) forget it

There is a fellow kiwi that debunks conspiracies (mostly flat earth) on youtube that has come out as trans (@Planarwalk). The utter vitriol that has been directed at her since she came out (and a little before as she at that stage tended towards effeminate) has been incredible to see. Trans people must be some of the strongest folk around.

What licence are they using? Do you know something everyone else does not?

Just because Llama Group want to control what goes into FreeLlama? Just like every other open source with a leadership?

Winamp will remain the owner of the software and will decide on the innovations made in the official version

If I release project qwtop as open source I still retain ownership of my code and make the decisions about what makes it into the main release; how is this different so far, when we haven’t seen the licence?

<edit: see post below>

BlueEther ,
@BlueEther@no.lastname.nz avatar

thanks, there was nothing about a licence with the original post that i saw

The fact that there isnt one is useed as proof of a flat earth, I wonder what they will come up with when this goes in?

BlueEther ,
@BlueEther@no.lastname.nz avatar

Or the fact that you have to lay a cable some 9,000km through some of the roughest / windy seas. It’s not called the Roaring Forties for nothing

Edit misread your comment

Kaikoura Earthquake

To give some perspective, parts of the Kaikoura cost had 8m vertical displacement and others were displaced 5m north

We felt it some 700km away

as well as what @jjagaimo said, there is also a scaled weight based on time since activity that is applied to hot/scaled sorting that allows things to bubble to the top but to slowly sink as they get older

Problems with creating my own instance

I am currently trying to create my own Lemmy instance and am following the join-lemmy.org docker guide. But unfortunately docker compose up doesn’t work with the default config and throw’s a yaml: line 32: found character that cannot start any token error. Is there something I can do to fix this?...

American wanting to move abroad, what's the best bet for an registered nurse?

Hi there, I’m a registered nurse in Phoenix, Arizona and I’m seriously considering moving abroad because this country is driving me insane for a lot of reasons. I was considering moving to Israel since I’m Jewish and I’ve heard they have a better healthcare system there and pay nurses well but this war has made me not...

Thoughts on New Zealand or Austrailia?

BlueEther ,
@BlueEther@no.lastname.nz avatar

here in NZ I’d say we are much more progressive than the states, although we have a centre right government at the moment.

you will earn less than the US I would think, but I would hope that our quality of life is better.

Safety? not every second person is carrying a sidearm or protesting with an AR style firearm

I'm so tired of hearing about US police brutality and China being authoritarian. Why does it feel like everyone is a hypocrite here? Where are the posts about Chinese protests and police brutality?

I bet if the kind of things happening in the US happened in China, I wouldn’t be able to stop hearing about it. I mean, people are still criticizing the Tiananmen Square massacre, and hasn’t anything happened since then? It’s like still making conspiracy theories about Kennedy’s assassination or 9/11, those are old news.

in the communities i hang in here there a a good few that must be in their 50s (and i’m one of them).

just look at the number of posts in the *nix and self hosting communities for comments about pre and early linus users, or selfhosting email back in the day , or bsd/unix usage

I just wonder how up and downvoting would work since that would go very differently from Lemmy.

how so?

I created a board game alternative for evil people (lemmy.today)

Guys, I have something to brag about. After almost a year of hard learning, I finally created my first mobile game! Storiado is a board game alternative that will make you wonder what’s wrong with your friends. Play by answering simple questions, mix all the answers, and generate the most twisted story you’ve ever read. And...

who is on Lemmy (the sociology of Lemmy)

I dont know if this has been asked before or if this may be a little goofy of a question but I didn’t see anything relating to it and I’m kinda curious what the culture of Lemmy is like and what sort of common things people see. ive been paying attention to interactions but nothing is as good as just asking everyone.

well for me:

  • just passed 50 last month
  • been kicking around ‘PCs’ since the vic-20
  • buun using linux since Mandrake Helios (6.1)
  • have self hosted all sorts (including email for nearly 10 yrs, not any more other than a relay for my lemmy)
  • had a mastodon instance for about 2-3 years - but use mastodon.nz
  • spun up my instance of lemmy just as the exodus started
  • been into tinkering with electronics from childhood

I guess that puts me in the the tech group that seems very common here

other groups that seem well represented are the ‘left’ and lgbqt+

Driving in Japan (jemmy.jeena.net)

Driving in Japan with the wheel on the right side. The first time I did that last year I drove on the wrong side of the road about 5 times and got a shock every time when I saw all the ghost drivers just to quickly realize that it’s me who is driving the wrong way.
