Idiocracy is the funniest comedy I’ve ever seen, but its becoming like a documentary of our time now… And that wasn’t intended I think.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

The movie portrays people as mostly being interested in shallow things, such as nudity, sex, entertainment, celebrities.

I think humans are more interested than ever in those things now that we have mobile phones with Facebook and Instagram and tiktok and so on.

Also almost everyone is too tired after work to do something productive with their lives (by system design).

If the TV was bad, the mobile phone is worse. People can’t even sit alone for 5 mins anymore.

These apps also make people very adhd and they can’t focus on anything without needing stimulation. It’s common to no longer be able to watch a movie without wanting to bring up the phone. Or to bring it up in the middle of a conversation.

One could argue it doesn’t make people dumber though… And I guess not. Not dumber, just more unable to be in the moment and feel peaceful.

This guy looks more interesting than some office suit guy to me. :)

Womens painted eyebrows looks ugly and so does this.

At least we are away from the trend of massive silicon lips now right? Right?

It’s all ridiculous. Women looks awesome without any of this shit, and they look worse with it.

You made 38 comments in two months yourself, so… Maybe contribute?

I don’t mean to upset you, but honestly, we get the experience we create here. We can’t be passive and expect others to create interesting content for us.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Ok sure. But my point is, we really get what we create here. People shouldn’t complain about not much posts or comments if they don’t contribute to them themselves.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Sure. Memes is one thing I see a lot on Lemmy, and I unsubscribed to some communities because it just took over. To me that’s low quality, but to others it could be the best content ever.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I do it too… It may be low quality but its kind of like meeting friends - not everything someone says is going to be very interesting but at least it’s socializing…

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Indeed :)

I’ve been using Linux for decades and I don’t use the big tech sites much. I get excited about a new release of Gnome or KDE or some cool command line utility…

Because you are right, the web is taken over and they want to turn it into cable TV subscriptions for sites and verified internet accounts etc.

The goals of the security agencies and the goals of the big tech ad agencies go hand in hand. None of them care about the users, and both of them just wants the user data, as much as possible.

I think using tech like Lemmy and Matrix gets us away from all of that shit, and it’s good enough these days for anyone to use without too much trouble.

Conspiracy theories. I think they are fascinating and often has foundation in truths, and then spun out of control.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It’s as always - most people are indifferent and don’t care, small loud minority expresses hate.

People hate a lot of things. People hate ugly people, or fat people, or people who don’t recycle. They hate pretty people for having it too easy, or people who play politics to get ahead. They hate marketing people.

Hate is a word that is being used for “dislike” these days, which makes conversations confusing.

Very few people actually hate someone.

Ok, so this is fine, but if I want to work with people from my own culture, I’m a racist. :)

Ok, i want a young single attractive female driver preferring heterosexual men. Not weird at all. :)

The Batshit Crazy Story Of The Day Elon Musk Decided To Personally Rip Servers Out Of A Sacramento Data Center (www.techdirt.com)

I’m not surprised at all. Only people who work in IT are aware or care about anything other then the default apps and operating systems.

Not using it at all.

For me, Plasma is awesome but I can usually find some bugs in a few days of using it. Gnome is usually rock solid, although there has been times when it also has been buggy.

I switch back and forth a lot and it adds to the fun I think.

This is very much like the people saying airplanes will never fly after watching the prototypes fail in the 1900s.

It’s 100% guaranteed that computers will be able to write software much better and faster than humans. The only variable is how long it will take.

I think within a decade. Could be wrong and it could be two decades but I doubt it.

Think about it - these bots are already being used by humans to solve tasks every day. The only difference now compared to the future is that now there is a slow human typing something on a keyboard.

In the future, you will have bots talking to bots, millions of times per second, and models will learn in real time, not being pre-trained.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I’m very confident about this, yes. But it’s still just my opinion.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yep true AI is not language models, this is just the beginning.

Compilation turns source code into binaries, and that’s because humans wants to write code rather than machine code, again because we are not smart enough to quickly write machine code.

I expect computers to skip all these steps completely in the future and just generate programs immediately.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

You will be able to talk to the computer but more importantly, the computer will already know a lot of patterns what is the best way to do something under the conditions you will describe.

It will be like having only top programmers write code when you explain to them what you want, except much faster. There could also be brain implants to interact directly, but that I think is at least 30 years away.

This entire gender discussion is just to engage people and make them care about politics.

No different than social media algorithms designed to make people angry so they engage.

Keeps the peasants fighting and arguing about pointless things. My advice to people in this thread is to ask yourself if the rich owners actually cares about your gender and what they can do to make you feel better.

Do we think humanity is worth saving?

Is there something in our behavior that makes us proud to be human beings?

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yes I think so. Emotionally we would care if humanity survives if there was a reason to be proud of what we have accomplished.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It’s just what I feel. It’s hard for me to feel humanity is worth saving. But I’m happy to hear another point of view. Do you feel we are worth saving?

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Ok so next step of thinking is, why do we feel this way? Why is it now seemingly common to think humanity is not worth saving?

When I’m looking at cats and one of them is hurting, I want to save it with all my soul. But when it’s humans, I don’t feel the same empathy.

Finally boarded the ship! And all it took was swallowing my pride.

Started learning Linux with Manjaro a few years ago, but there were always stability issues pushing me away from daily driving. I found when I did have time to use my PC, it was largely for gaming, and when any issue presented and needed to be fixed it was a bit of a barrier to entry....

It’s really a great search engine. I’ve been on it for at least 6 months now… I never even considered leaving it once I tried it.

It’s always evolving too. Now I searched for python and I get these categories of Blast from the Past, and Interesting Finds.

kagi.com/search?q=Python&r=se&sh=vmQVTzdI…

It actually encourages the user to explore and find new links and new sites which is pretty cool :)

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I work in IT so I use it every day on both desktop and mobile. About 1000 searches per month.

I think you get 500 searches for 5 dollars or something, its cheap :)

Actually no, you get 1000 searches for 10 dollars, but only 300 searches for 5 dollars.

Anyway, if you will notice 10 dollars being spent on this, you probably shouldn’t buy it. I don’t notice it so I pay for it.

Birds are super cute, but younger people are often too focused on themselves to even see how cool they are. :)

Except of course if they can get Instagram likes for the pictures of birds, then it’s interesting… :p

Google Chrome pushes browser history-based ad targeting • The Register (www.theregister.com)

Topics essentially works like this: rather than using cookies to track people around the web and figure out their interests from the sites they visit and the apps they use, websites can ask Chrome directly, via its Topics JavaScript API, what sort of things the user is interested in, and then display ads based on that. Chrome...

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

This is incorrect. A user who uses chrome but uses another search engine and blocks cookies and tracking scripts is not providing Google with information about what they are doing online.

With the topics api, Google reads your actual browsing history which is incredibly private information that they have no right to look at whatsoever.

I don’t know what world you are living in when you think Google wants to desperately stop third common cookies and other means of tracking - Google is an ad company!

The internet not wanting to pay for Google services sounds like a Google problem, not a problem for the users. Google doesn’t have some universal right to exist and be preditory to it’s users.

If they can’t sell their services, they should get off the internet instead of surviving by invading their users privacy and offering “free” services. Fuck Google.

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I think this is the generation that doesn’t care about anything except maybe the environment and gender roles…
