At my day job, we took a look at nomad and now we are planning to run everything in nomad. It’s just so simple to understand and a joy to use.

I would comment on this but since federation is broken…this won’t be seen until the instance admin restarts Lemmy and federation works once again.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I think it works for a while after restart of the server, and then stops working. Yesterday I was making comments that didn’t federate until 12 hours later when I assume the instance admin restarted the server.

Someone posted this in another thread and the stats are genuinely misleading here. All the super large instances are federating with Meta, with like 90% of the users.

Or probably millions of them since they are not very smart at all, just attention seeking man childs.

Still have lots of issues with outgoing federation in 0.19.1.

Stay on 0.18.5 for now…

Wayland-Proxy Load Balancer Helping Firefox Cope With Wayland Issues (www.phoronix.com)

Among the Firefox Wayland bugs, one of the top crash bugs is over a lost connection to a Wayland compositor. For dealing with it is to have a proxy between Firefox and the Wayland compositor to cache messages and prevent compositor message queue overflows.

I agree, the original idea of the fediverse is awesome. However, I believe the big players will decide almost everything about it in the end, simply due to influence on decisions being made.

But it’s fine. I’m kind of happy as long as big tech is not running it, and as long as it doesn’t have ads and user tracking, and other poison.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

The largest instances all block many other instances and they are all in favor of federating with Meta as well.

To be fair, a lot of the blocking are of instances that are causing lots of moderation problems, since they post things that upset many users.

Most users actually prefer a walled garden experience so they don’t have to see things that upsets them. As long as they feel the walled garden has sensible rules.

Yeah we are all so sick and tired of that shit now. Enough is enough. They are talking about social media being over, but I think it’s just going to be more spread out. Platforms like this one will be appriciated by those of us who value the things you mentioned.

I’ve been researching cars lately and the Rav 4 has really lost its status now compared to many other cars like Honda CR-V and Kia Sportage Hybrid. Toyota always had their reliability record, but these news is not what they need now… :)

Yeah I noticed they had problems with breaks and automatic breaking systems. Not good.

Honda seems to be the best of the bunch. Mazda also seems reliable.

If I don’t believe the fediverse can survive the embrace of big tech, I don’t believe in the fediverse? What? Makes absolutely no sense.

Meta doesn’t want to separate content from service. They want to lock users into their own services using their enormous wealth and marketing. It’s the opposite of the open web you are talking about. They will be compatible with the fediverse to influence it and try to control it, by adding features you can only get if you are on their platform. Their goal is to make most people prefer the Meta version of the fediverse.

There are idiots in the world and their opinions are actually idiotic. :)

It’s 100% super obvious that Meta wants to control the fediverse, and that’s why they are coming for it.

Amd drivers are included on the kernel so it will just work on all distributions. So I would give it a shot, don’t think you will have any problems. :)

Should I move to Docker?

I’m a retired Unix admin. It was my job from the early '90s until the mid '10s. I’ve kept somewhat current ever since by running various machines at home. So far I’ve managed to avoid using Docker at home even though I have a decent understanding of how it works - I stopped being a sysadmin in the mid '10s, I still worked...

Yeah dot files are config files, and usually apps have one. And yes, you would have to explore each program to see what the settings do.

You picked Debian now, just be aware that all software is very old and when you read docs for programs, you probably have to read about older versions instead of the current one.
